Quick answer

The Grade 5 ELA Pack costs $13.99 for five Grade 5 resources: Grade 5 English Grammar (parts of speech, sentence types, punctuation), Grade 5 Writing Prompts for structured practice, Grade 5 Phonics & Morphology word study, and two reading stories, The Secret Garden Door and Mia and the Magic Kite with questions. Separately the parts cost $19.95. Unlike the Grade 1 to 4 packs, it has no vocabulary trainer.

The real problem

Fifth graders can read. Now they need precision.

In fifth grade the gap is rarely whether a child can read and write, but how well. Students follow a plot and retell it, yet struggle when a question asks why a character acted, or what a word means in this particular sentence. In writing they produce plenty, but every sentence starts the same way, punctuation goes missing in long sentences and paragraphs drift. Morphology starts to do a lot of work here. Many words fifth graders meet in science and social studies are built from parts, and a student who can spot a prefix or a root can work out a word they have never seen. Without that, they skip it and lose meaning. Grammar becomes more about choices than rules. Knowing the sentence types and the parts of speech lets a writer vary sentences on purpose instead of by accident. The year ahead matters too. Sixth grade, often in a new building, brings more reading across subjects and more independent writing. Fifth-grade teachers want students to arrive there with steady reading habits and the vocabulary of grammar, so that feedback such as vary your sentence openings or check this fragment actually makes sense to them.

Why it fits

How the Grade 5 parts answer this

The pack leans toward reading and word study, with grammar and writing practice that expects some confidence.

  • The Secret Garden Door gives a full reading comprehension piece for close reading and discussion.
  • Mia and the Magic Kite comes with questions, useful for a second, more independent reading round.
  • Grade 5 Phonics & Morphology teaches word parts so students can work out unfamiliar words.
  • Grade 5 English Grammar covers parts of speech, sentence types and punctuation for more varied writing.
  • Grade 5 Writing Prompts offer structured practice aimed at writers who already have some confidence.

Getting started

One possible month with the pack

A suggested order over roughly four weeks. Shorten or stretch it to fit your schedule.

  1. Week 1: guided readingRead The Secret Garden Door with the class or child, stopping to talk about why characters act as they do. Do the comprehension work together before anyone works alone.
  2. Weeks 1–2: word partsIntroduce the Phonics & Morphology pages. Collect words with shared roots or prefixes from both stories and from science or social studies texts, and keep a class list.
  3. Week 2: sentence typesUse Grade 5 English Grammar to review sentence types and parts of speech. Ask students to rewrite a paragraph of their own using at least three sentence types.
  4. Week 3: independent readingHand out Mia and the Magic Kite with its questions for independent work. Compare answers in pairs and ask each pair to point to the sentence that proves their answer.
  5. Week 4: structured writingFinish with a prompt from Grade 5 Writing Prompts. Assess the piece on one or two skills from the month, such as varied sentences or a clear paragraph structure.

What to buy

Picking the right pack for a fifth grader

The Grade 5 ELA Pack at $13.99 is the direct choice for a fifth-grade class or child; its five parts would cost $19.95 separately. If you want a vocabulary trainer, the Grade 4 ELA Pack ($13.99) has one and can double as review. Students ready for academic word study and editing tools can move to the Grade 6 ELA Pack ($10.99). For multi-grade classrooms or several children at home, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum ($49.99) includes grammar, writing and phonics for all six grades plus six stories, among them both Grade 5 stories.

Honest limits

Where the pack stops

Two stories and four skill areas are practice, not a full fifth-grade ELA curriculum, and there is no novel study or vocabulary trainer in this pack. It is not aligned to Common Core or any state standards and has no standards codes, so check it against your own Grade 5 requirements. You provide the printing or devices and any further reading. The licence is for your own class or family; message Teach Lessons first if a team wants to use it. Not a fit? You can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does it match Common Core or my state's fifth grade ELA standards?

It is not aligned to, endorsed by or approved under Common Core or any state's standards, and it does not include standards codes. Fifth-grade topics such as morphology, sentence types and reading comprehension are practiced, but you need to compare the pack with your own state standards or district curriculum yourself.

Why are there two stories?

The pack combines two reading comprehension resources: The Secret Garden Door and Mia and the Magic Kite, which comes with questions. Two stories let you teach one together and give the second for independent work, so you can see whether a student reads closely without your help.

Is this too easy for a strong fifth grader?

The writing prompts and word study are described for confident writers and readers, so they are not beginner material. For a student who finishes everything quickly, add the Grade 6 ELA Pack, which moves on to roots, prefixes and editing tools, or ask for longer written answers to the story questions.

Will it help with reading in science and social studies?

The morphology pages can help, because many subject words are built from parts. Practice the patterns in the pack, then ask students to find and break down words in their science or social studies texts. The pack itself is an ELA resource, so the link to other subjects comes from you.

Can I copy a story for the whole class?

Yes, the licence covers copies for the students you teach yourself. Print one story set per student or show it on a screen. What you cannot do is share the files with other teachers or post them on a public site; for colleagues, contact Teach Lessons first.

How is the pack delivered?

As a digital download straight after purchase, with a link by email and a copy under Orders in your customer account. The materials work for print and digital classrooms. If it turns out not to fit your class, you can exchange it for store credit of equal value within 7 days.
