The real problem
Why literacy is the hardest block in a combined room
In a combined classroom, a small rural school or an intervention room, the reading block is where things fall apart first. A first grader is still building phonological awareness, a third grader is working on word patterns, and a sixth grader should be handling roots and prefixes. Put them on the same worksheet and someone is either lost or bored. The usual fix is collecting material from five places, each with its own layout and its own idea of what Grade 4 means. Children lose minutes working out each new format, and the teacher loses evenings matching pages to children. A multi-grade room needs the same kind of task at different levels, so one routine works for everyone. The whole room does grammar at the same time, each child at their own grade. Everyone writes from a prompt, but the first grader finishes a sentence while the sixth grader edits a paragraph. While two groups work alone, you sit with the third. That only works if the independent work is clear enough to start without you.
Why it fits
How the packs line up across Grades 1–6
The bundle is built as parallel strands, one per skill, with a pack for every grade.
- Grammar runs from sentences, nouns, verbs and punctuation in Grade 1 to sentence types in Grade 6.
- Writing prompts move from sentence practice and story starters in Grade 1 to editing tools in Grade 6.
- Phonics starts with phonological awareness in Grades 1–2 and grows into morphology and academic word study by Grade 6.
- Six stories, such as Daisy the Brave Little Duck and The Lighthouse Mystery, give reading groups a text with questions.
- Because every grade has the same three skill strands, one timetable can serve the whole room.
- A child working above or below grade level can simply use the neighboring grade's pack.
Getting started
Running one literacy block for several grades
One rotation that suits this kind of material; treat it as a starting point.
- Sort children by level, not by ageBefore the first day, look at each child's reading and writing and pick the pack that fits. A strong second grader may start in Grade 3 grammar; a struggling fifth grader may start with Grade 4 phonics.
- Teach one shared routineShow the whole room the same sequence: grammar first, then writing, then a check-in with you. Once children know the routine, the different grade levels stop mattering for classroom management.
- Rotate a small group to your tableWhile two groups work on their own grammar or writing pages, take the third for phonics or word study. Rotate so each group gets direct time with you during the block.
- Bring in the reading storiesUse one of the six reading comprehension stories once or twice a week. A group reads it with you and then answers the questions on its own while you move to the next table.
- Move children up when they are readyBecause the packs run from Grade 1 to Grade 6 in the same strands, moving a child to the next level does not mean learning a new format. Keep a simple note of who uses which pack.
What to buy
One bundle for the room, or single grade packs
If you teach three or more grades in one room, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum at $49.99 is the sensible buy; the 24 packs cost $95.76 separately. If you only need one or two grades, the single grade packs cost less: the Grade 1 ELA Pack is $12.99, and the Grade 3 and Grade 5 ELA Packs are $13.99 each. The Grade 1 and Grade 3 packs add a vocabulary trainer, and the Grade 5 pack has a second story. For a student brand new to English, the ESL Newcomer Curriculum Bundle ($79.99) fits better.
Honest limits
Limits to know before buying
These are skill packs, not a complete reading program with leveled readers, assessments and a year-long scope and sequence. They are not written for any one state and carry no Common Core or state standards codes, so compare them with your own standards. Not every grade has its own reading story in this bundle, and you still choose the books and decide on placement. For use by several teachers or a whole school, message Teach Lessons first. If the bundle is not right for your room, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does the bundle follow my state's ELA standards?
It is not aligned with Common Core or any state's ELA standards, and no state or district has reviewed or approved it. The packs are organized by grade and skill, which makes comparison easy: check the grammar, phonics and writing topics for each grade against your state's expectations and fill any gaps from your other material.
Is this enough for a full literacy program?
No. It covers grammar, writing prompts and phonics or word study for each grade, plus six stories. A full program also needs books for guided and independent reading, plus spelling and assessment decisions you make yourself. Use the packs for independent practice and small-group work inside the program you already have.
I also have kindergartners. Will it work?
The bundle starts at Grade 1, so there is no kindergarten material in it. A kindergartner who is ready may manage parts of the Grade 1 phonics and writing packs with your support, but plan literacy for the youngest group separately, with the materials you already use for that age.
Can a homeschool family with three children use one copy?
Yes. A parent teaching their own children of different ages is using it in their own teaching, which the licence covers. Each child works in the pack for their grade. Using the files with another family or a co-op needs a short message to Teach Lessons first, and public posting is not allowed.
How does the writing progress from Grade 1 to Grade 6?
Grade 1 starts with sentence practice and story starters, Grade 2 adds creative tasks, Grade 3 uses structured prompts, and Grade 4 brings in word banks and support tools. Grade 5 is aimed at confident writers, and Grade 6 adds vocabulary and editing tools, so older and younger children can write at the same time.
What happens after I pay?
The download is available right away: a link arrives by email, and the files also appear in your customer account under Orders. With 24 packs, it helps to make one folder per grade before printing, so each child's work is easy to find again later.
