6th Grade Math Resources: Fractions, Geometry and First Algebra
6th Grade Math Resources: Fractions, Geometry and First Algebra
Sixth grade teachers looking for resources on fraction operations and first algebra can use the Middle School Math Starter Bundle, which pairs Fractions Complete for Years 6–7 with Algebra Basics on expressions, the Growing Math Bundle teaching kit for Grades 5–9, and a compass and ruler constructions workbook for later. It supports major grade 6 topics without claiming to be the whole year. Price: $54.99, compared with $77.96 for the parts.
See the grade 6 resources →For sixth grade, the Middle School Math Starter Bundle ($54.99; $77.96 for the four parts separately) supplies Fractions Complete for Years 6–7 (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions), Algebra Basics on expressions, the Growing Math Bundle teaching kit for Grades 5–9, and a Geometry workbook on compass and ruler constructions for Grades 7–9. It supports key grade 6 topics, but it is not a complete sixth grade math curriculum.

The real problem
Where sixth grade math gets difficult
Sixth grade sits on a hinge. Students leave elementary arithmetic behind and are asked to reason with fractions, ratios and variables as tools rather than procedures. Two topics carry much of the weight. The first is fraction operations, especially multiplication and division. Many sixth graders can follow the steps but cannot say why multiplying by one-half makes a number smaller or why dividing by a fraction can make it bigger. Without that sense, word problems become guesswork. The second is the move into algebra. Writing and evaluating expressions is often the first time students see a letter used as a number, and confusion here is easy to miss: a student who thinks 3x means thirty-something or that x always equals one will look fine on simple problems and fall apart later. Sixth grade teachers also face a wide range, from students still shaky on basic fraction meaning to those ready for seventh grade work. Material that teaches the operations properly, starts algebra slowly, and has room above grade level helps you keep the whole group moving.
Why it fits
How the bundle supports a sixth grade year
The fractions and expressions resources target core grade 6 work; the other two give you range in both directions.
- Fractions Complete covers adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions, written for students around Years 6–7.
- Algebra Basics introduces expressions, giving sixth graders a careful first look at variables.
- The Growing Math Bundle teaching kit spans Grades 5–9, useful for both review and extension in a mixed class.
- Compass and ruler constructions, written for Grades 7–9, offer stretch work for strong sixth graders.
- Separate resources by topic make it easy to slot each one into your school's grade 6 sequence.
- Printable files work in classrooms where devices are shared or unreliable.
Getting started
Placing the bundle in your grade 6 year
A suggested placement. The bundle comes without a pacing calendar; follow your school's order of topics.
- Early year: check fraction basicsUse the opening parts of Fractions Complete to see who can add and subtract fractions confidently. Pair this with teaching kit pages for students who need earlier review.
- Fraction multiplication and divisionWork through the multiplying and dividing sections slowly. Ask students to estimate first, so they notice when an answer should be bigger or smaller than the starting number.
- Introduce expressionsMove to Algebra Basics once fractions are secure. Have students write expressions from short word phrases and evaluate them with given values. Check that students read 3x correctly.
- Connect fractions and algebraBring the two topics together with expressions that use fractional coefficients. It reinforces both and prepares students for equations in grade 7. Keep the numbers friendly.
- Stretch with constructionsToward the end of the year, give strong students the compass and ruler constructions. The rest of the class can join for a hands-on block if time allows.
What to buy
Bundle or a single resource for grade 6
Most sixth grade teachers will use Fractions Complete and Algebra Basics at minimum, and the teaching kit for differentiation, which makes the Middle School Math Starter Bundle at $54.99 worth it compared with $77.96 for the four parts. If you only need fractions, buy that resource alone. For deeper algebra work, the Algebra Foundations Bundle ($59.99, Grades 5–9) covers expressions, equations, real numbers and ratio across four workbooks. The Pre-Calculus Prep Bundle is meant for high school. TEACHMORE15 does not apply to bundles.
Honest limits
Gaps you will fill yourself
The bundle supports fractions, expressions and some geometry, but sixth grade typically also includes ratios and rates, percentages, integers, area and volume, and statistics, none of which are listed here. Plan those with other materials and check everything against your grade 6 requirements. The constructions workbook is written for older students and needs compasses and rulers you supply. The licence covers your own class; message Teach Lessons first for department use. If it does not fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Is it aligned to sixth grade Common Core or state standards?
No alignment or endorsement claim is made. The resources are written for Grades 5–9, with Fractions Complete aimed at Years 6–7. Fraction operations and expressions are common sixth grade topics, but check the contents against your own state or district standards before using it as a main unit.
Does it cover ratios and percentages?
Not in this bundle. The listed content is fractions, expressions, geometry constructions and the broader teaching kit. For ratio, proportion and percentage, the Algebra Foundations Bundle or the Everyday & Financial Math Bundle includes those topics, so plan your ratio unit with one of those or your adopted text.
Is the constructions workbook too advanced for sixth grade?
It is written for Grades 7–9, so for most sixth graders it is extension material. Strong students often enjoy it, and it can work as an end-of-year project. Many teachers save it for later grades. Teachers who keep it for their seventh and eighth graders in later years get more use from the bundle.
Does Fractions Complete include word problems?
The listed content is adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. Check the product page for details on the task types inside the workbook, and add your own context problems if your requirements stress applications. Short stories about recipes, measurements or sharing work well for sixth graders.
Can I use it with fifth graders too?
Parts of it, yes. The teaching kit and Algebra Basics are written for a band starting at Grade 5. Fractions Complete is aimed at Years 6–7, so it can work for strong fifth graders. That flexibility helps if your school combines grade 5 and grade 6 for math.
How do I access the files?
After checkout, you receive a download link by email, and the files stay available in your customer account under Orders. Since there is no physical shipment, you can print the opening fraction pages for tomorrow's class the same evening you buy, and download again later if you lose the files.
