Alaska Village School Literacy: One Download for Grades 1 Through 6
Alaska Village School Literacy: One Download for Grades 1 Through 6
When your Alaska village school has a few students spread across many grades, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum gives each child a grammar pack, a writing prompts pack and a phonics or word study pack for their own grade. That is 24 packs, including six reading stories, for $49.99, downloaded once and printed at school.
Check the grade packsThe Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum ($49.99) is a practical literacy option for an Alaska village school with students in many grades. It has 24 packs: grammar, writing prompts, and phonics or word study for each of Grades 1 through 6, plus six reading comprehension stories. The real problem
When every grade has one or two students
In Alaska, a village school closes when enrollment drops below the state's 10-student funding minimum. Nikolski, in the Aleutians, bucked that trend and reopened in 2024 with one school serving kindergarten through Grade 11. In a school like that, the teacher does not have a Grade 3 class. The teacher has a third grader, perhaps two, a fifth grader, and a high school student working on something else entirely. Literacy is where that spread hurts most. A struggling first reader needs daily phonics; an older elementary student needs grammar and paragraph writing; neither can wait while the teacher plans for the other. Ordering separate printed materials for every grade costs money, and shipping to a remote village can take a long time. What helps is literacy work sorted cleanly by grade and by skill, delivered as a download so it is there the moment it is bought, and printable on the school's own machine. Then each child has their own next page, and the teacher can spend the literacy block moving from student to student instead of preparing for each one in turn.
Why it fits
What a very small school gets from the 24 packs
The bundle is organized the way a village literacy block actually runs: by child, not by class.
- Each grade from 1 to 6 has its own grammar pack, so no student works far off level.
- Grade 1 and Grade 2 phonics packs give beginning readers the daily sound practice they need.
- Grade 5 phonics and morphology helps confident readers break longer words into parts.
- Writing prompts for every grade let students write while you work one-on-one with someone else.
- Six reading comprehension stories, such as Mia and the Moonlight Garden, give short shared reading tasks.
- A digital download avoids shipping delays; print what you need on the school's own printer.
Getting started
Setting up literacy for a handful of students
A suggested setup for a K–11 school or one like it. Change it as students arrive or move away.
- Make one folder per studentInstead of grade folders, give each child a folder with their grade's grammar, writing and phonics packs. With so few students, individual folders are easier to manage than class sets.
- Check the real starting pointSpend the first days watching where each student actually reads and writes. Someone may need the pack one grade below, and the bundle lets you switch without buying anything new.
- Run a rotating blockWork with one student or a pair on phonics while the others write from their prompts or complete grammar pages. Move around the room in the same order every day.
- Read a story together weeklyOnce a week, pick one of the reading comprehension stories. Younger students listen and retell; older ones answer the questions and help the younger ones with new words.
- Keep the older students movingStudents above Grade 6 are outside this bundle. Give them their own coursework during the block, and invite them to read aloud to younger students when their schedule allows.
What to buy
What to buy for a very small school
If you teach three or more of Grades 1–6, buy the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum at $49.99; the 24 packs cost $95.76 separately. With students in only one grade, a single grade pack is cheaper and adds a vocabulary trainer: the Grade 1 ELA Pack is $12.99, and the Grade 3 and Grade 5 ELA Packs are $13.99 each. For a student who is new to English, the ESL Newcomer Curriculum Bundle ($79.99, parts $159.91) begins with everyday English, pronouns and the simple present.
Honest limits
Limits to know before buying
The packs are not written for Alaska. They contain no Alaska Native languages, place names or cultural content, and no Alaska standards codes, so compare them with the state's ELA standards and your district's literacy plan, and bring in local stories yourself. Kindergarten and students above Grade 6 are not covered. It is skills practice rather than a core reading program, and there is no reading story for Grade 2. You print the materials. For use across several village schools in one district, contact Teach Lessons first. If it is not a fit, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Is the curriculum aligned to Alaska's English language arts standards?
No. It has not been aligned to, reviewed by or approved by the state or any school district, and it contains no standard codes. The grade-level skills are typical of elementary literacy, but check each pack against Alaska's standards and your district's expectations, and keep using your district's core reading program where there is one.
Does it include Alaska Native languages or local stories?
No. All packs are in English and use general stories and topics. If your school teaches a local language or uses community stories, keep doing that; these packs can sit alongside as English grammar, writing and phonics practice. Community members and elders who share stories in the classroom remain the best source for that local layer, and nothing here tries to replace them.
What about our kindergartner and our older students?
They are outside this bundle. The earliest pack is Grade 1 and the latest is Grade 6. A kindergartner can listen to the stories, and older students can help younger readers, but both need their own materials for the rest of their literacy work. Plan those students' work first, then fit the Grades 1–6 packs around them.
Our internet is unreliable. How do I get the files?
Buy and download when the connection is good. The link arrives by email and stays in your customer account under Orders, so you can try again later if a download breaks off. After that, everything prints from the school's own computer. Keep a copy on a second device or drive at school as a backup.
Can one student use packs from two different grades?
Yes. Because every grade from 1 to 6 is included, a fourth grader can do Grade 4 grammar and Grade 3 phonics at the same time. That flexibility is one of the main reasons the full bundle makes sense in a very small school. It also means a student who moves up mid-year needs no new purchase.
Can the district buy one copy for all its village schools?
The standard licence covers one teacher's own teaching. For several schools or teachers, write to Teach Lessons before buying and describe how you plan to use it. Other questions about school purchasing can go to Teach Lessons as well. Mention the number of schools and teachers involved so the answer fits your situation.
