View the Grade 3 bundleFor a Boston third grader who needs regular practice at home, the 3rd Grade Practice Bundle ($59.99) is a sound starting point. It contains grammar, creative writing, phonics, a reading story and a vocabulary trainer, two math practice packs, Grade 3 warm-ups, the Numbers to 1000 unit and the Math Made Easy parent guide. It is practice plus named units, not a full year of Grade 3 curriculum, and it has no Massachusetts history.

The real problem
Third grade in Boston: what families end up filling in
Boston Public Schools opened Grades 1–12 on September 8, 2026. Third grade is when reading starts to carry the rest of the school day and math moves into place value up to the thousands, yet the school day rarely has room for extra practice. Winter adds another reason. Massachusetts does not count remote learning toward required structured learning time, so a snow day stays a day off; districts schedule 185 days to absorb five closures, and in February 2026 a blizzard shut many Southeastern Massachusetts districts for a full week. Homeschooling families answer to the district. Home instruction must be approved in advance by the school committee or superintendent, most districts ask for an annual notice of intent with an education plan, and progress can be checked by testing or an agreed method such as progress reports or dated work samples. Reviewers may look at your materials, so organized work helps. Grade 3 social studies, Massachusetts, Home to Many Different People, is left entirely to you.
Why it fits
How the ten resources work at a Boston kitchen table
Everything prints, so your child works away from screens and you can file finished pages. Here is how the parts line up with home use.
- Grade 3 Grammar Mastery covers nouns, pronouns, sentences and punctuation in short, checkable pages.
- Grade 3 Creative Writing gives structured prompts and story starters for a weekend writing habit.
- Phonics & Word Patterns and the vocabulary trainer suit short sessions before or after school.
- Numbers to 1000 teaches place value, comparing and number lines, with word problems and answer keys.
- Math Made Easy is a parent guide with a workbook, so you know how to explain each step.
- Dated, completed worksheets make simple work samples if your home instruction plan uses them.
Getting started
A weekly rhythm for Grade 3 at home
One suggested routine for after school or homeschool mornings. Shift the days around BPS holidays and any snow closures.
- Read the parent guide firstSpend an evening with Math Made Easy before you begin. It shows how the math is explained, which helps when your child's method from school looks different from the way you learned it.
- Mondays and Wednesdays: mathAlternate the Numbers to 1000 unit with the two math practice packs. Open each session with one Grade 3 warm-up worksheet so your child settles in before new work.
- Tuesdays and Thursdays: reading and wordsUse the phonics and word patterns kit and the vocabulary trainer for short sessions, then read Mia and the Moonlight Garden in parts and answer its questions together.
- Fridays: grammar and writingDo one Grammar Mastery page, then a creative writing prompt. Keep the writing in a folder; by midyear you can see the change in sentence length and punctuation.
- Snow days: catch-up and reviewBecause closures in Massachusetts cannot become remote school days, keep a few unused warm-ups and a writing prompt in a drawer for the next storm. Score them with the answer keys.
What to buy
Choosing between the Grade 3 bundle and smaller sets
For most Boston third graders, start with the 3rd Grade Practice Bundle at $59.99; the ten parts cost $95.90 bought separately. If math is already strong and you only want reading and writing, the Grade 3 ELA Pack costs $13.99 and has the five literacy pieces, all of which are also in the bundle. For a child who needs deeper math, the Elementary Math Units Bundle ($69.99) adds fractions and area and perimeter, though Numbers to 1000 is in both, so you would own it twice. Spring test review is better served by the Grades 3–5 Test Prep Bundle ($64.99).
Honest limits
Be clear about what you are buying
This bundle is written for any state. It contains no Massachusetts framework codes, no Massachusetts history and nothing for science or the other subjects in the state's home instruction statute. Boston Public Schools has not reviewed or approved it, so homeschoolers should check their education plan with the district and confirm current law with a homeschool legal resource. Printing is up to you. Tutors using it with several students should message Teach Lessons first. If it is not a fit, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value; there is no cash refund.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Will BPS accept this bundle as my homeschool curriculum?
It has not been reviewed or approved by Boston Public Schools or the state, and it does not follow the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Approval in Massachusetts depends on your whole education plan, which the school committee or superintendent reviews in advance. List it as part of your English and math materials, confirm what the district expects, and check current rules with a homeschool legal resource.
Does it cover the subjects Massachusetts lists for home instruction?
Only some. The statute names spelling, reading, writing, English language and grammar, geography, arithmetic, drawing, music, U.S. history and Constitution, duties of citizenship, health, physical education and good behavior. This bundle supports reading, writing, grammar, word work and arithmetic. Everything else needs other material. Plan those subjects separately.
My child attends BPS. Is this too much on top of homework?
Use a fraction of it. The warm-ups and phonics pages are short, and nothing has to be done in order. A sensible start is one area your child's teacher mentions, such as place value or punctuation, with the rest saved for school vacations or snow days.
Does it include Grade 3 social studies on Massachusetts?
No. The state's Grade 3 course, Massachusetts, Home to Many Different People, covers the Indigenous peoples of the Northeast, Plymouth Colony, the Massachusetts Bay Colony and Massachusetts and the Revolution. None of that is in this bundle, which is English and math practice only, so plan that course from other sources.
How do I get the files?
The bundle is a digital download. After checkout you get a link by email, and the files also sit in your customer account under Orders. Print what you need for the week ahead and keep the rest for later; there is nothing to install and no account for your child to set up.
What if my child finds it too easy?
Look at the Grades 3–5 Test Prep Bundle or the Elementary Math Units Bundle, which reach into Grade 4 and 5 topics. If the 3rd Grade Practice Bundle is clearly the wrong level, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.
