Why Quebec teachers use these
An English school board in Quebec teaches the same Quebec Education Program as every other board, and the same competencies come back on every report card. What makes planning here particular is the ministerial examinations. At elementary and Secondary II, certain uniform exams count towards a fifth of a student's final mark; at Secondary IV and V — mathematics, science, History of Québec and Canada, and the Secondary V language exams — they carry half the course mark and are required for the Secondary School Diploma. Most provinces have moved away from mandatory province-wide graduation exams. Quebec has not, and that leaves a teacher carrying two jobs at once: covering the competencies thoroughly enough for an external paper in June, and building enough of your own evaluation to stand behind the other half of the mark. Neither of those frees up an evening for producing four versions of a worksheet. A finished unit hands over the sequence, the levels, the slides and the keys, so your hours go into teaching and marking instead.

The four levels matter most in the years where a class holds a wide spread of reading ability in the language of instruction. Handing everyone the same sheet means part of the room copies and part waits, and neither group leaves you anything to judge a competency against. When each student works on the version pitched at them, every one of them produces something written, and because the four versions ask the same underlying question the work stays comparable. That is the difference between a folder of finished tasks and a mark assembled from memory — and the folder is what holds up when a colleague inherits the class.

Each unit is written to the concepts, skills and competencies the Quebec Education Program describes for its subject and cycle, so it belongs beside the planning your school already does rather than replacing it. Open the preview and hold it against your own scope and sequence before you buy.
Do these prepare students for the ministerial examinations?
They are teaching units, not exam packages. The uniform examinations at Secondary II, IV and V are set and marked by the ministry; we publish no past papers, no practice exams and no claim about results. What the units give you is the ordinary preparation behind an exam: subject vocabulary used correctly, data and text read carefully, and written answers that explain a method rather than state one, practised across the term.
How much planning time does a finished unit really save?
The part it removes is production. Four levels of a worksheet, a slide deck, a complete key and a timed plan is a full weekend of work for one topic, and the topic after that starts you over. You still make the teaching decisions — which level each student needs, what to cut when a week disappears — but those take twenty minutes with a coffee rather than two days at a laptop.
What can I look at before buying?

Use it the way you would look through an inspection copy: check the reading level against the group you actually teach, confirm the keys are complete, and see how far apart the four levels sit. If it leaves you unsure, buy one inexpensive unit and run it first.
What happens if a download is not right for my class?

My Secondary IV science exam is worth half the mark. Is May the wrong time for this?
May is the wrong time for a new topic, but it is a reasonable time for consolidation, and these units are built to be used in pieces. Run one lesson as a review of a concept the group never quite settled, or set the written task as practice in explaining a result. Earlier in the year they do more: the sequence covers the competency properly, which is what leaves you room in the spring instead of a backlog.
