Digitalisation and AI in the World of Work
The real problem
Standards under revision and a finance course on the way
California's CTE Model Curriculum Standards cover 15 industry sectors and 58 career pathways for Grades 7–12. They were first adopted on May 11, 2005, are listed as updated in January 2013, and the California Department of Education states that they are being revised. A teacher planning a course for 2026–27 is working from standards known to be changing. Personal finance is changing too. Beginning with pupils graduating in 2030–31, a one-semester standalone personal finance course is a state graduation requirement, and a local educational agency may exempt pupils who complete it from the one-semester economics requirement. Schools are deciding now where that course sits and who teaches it. Meanwhile the everyday need stays the same. Whether the class is a pathway course, an advisory period or a work-based learning seminar, students need practice writing a résumé, handling an interview, sending a professional email and working through a disagreement on a team. Those skills cut across every sector, which is exactly why they rarely get dedicated time in a pathway built around one industry. A teacher who wants to teach them well usually ends up writing the lessons alone.
Why it fits
How the units serve a California classroom
The eight units cover skills every pathway shares, so they sit beside sector coursework rather than replacing it.
- Application training on cover letters, CVs and interviews prepares students for internships and first jobs.
- Business letter and professional email practice gives students a format they will use with employers and colleges.
- The presenting unit builds speaking practice for class presentations, interviews and project showcases.
- Customer conversation and conflict lessons help students in retail, hospitality or service placements.
- Financial literacy and debt prevention gives an early look at money topics ahead of the new finance course.
- Digitalisation and AI in the World of Work opens a discussion on how jobs in every sector are changing.
Getting started
One semester outline
A suggested order for a semester advisory or career readiness class. Each unit also works on its own.
- Start with time and study habitsOpen with time management and study methods. Students plan their own weeks, which pays off right away in their other classes and sets up the workload of the rest of the course.
- Build the application packageTeach the cover letter, CV and interview unit, then professional email. By the end, each student has a draft résumé, a cover letter and a practiced email to a possible employer or mentor.
- Practice speaking and serviceRun the presenting unit and the customer conversations unit back to back. Mock interviews, short talks and role-played customer complaints give students repeated speaking practice in a low-stakes room.
- Work through teamwork and conflictUse the conflict and team management unit during a group project, so students apply the strategies to a real disagreement in their own team rather than a made-up one.
- Close with money and the future of workFinish with financial literacy and debt prevention, then digitalisation and AI in the world of work. Students leave with money basics and a clearer view of how AI is changing jobs.
What to buy
The bundle, or a smaller start
For a course built around job skills, the Career Readiness Curriculum Bundle at $99.99 (parts $199.92) is the full set. If your school is preparing for the personal finance requirement, the Personal Finance Starter Bundle ($59.99, parts $78.94) adds a course launch lesson, SMART goals, a money mindset quiz and interest math. Business and finance pathway teachers can look at the Accounting & Economics Fundamentals Bundle ($109.99, parts $224.91). If you only want the AI piece, Digitalisation and AI in the World of Work costs $24.99 on its own; it is already one of the eight units in the bundle.
Honest limits
Know this before you buy
The bundle is general career readiness material, not written for California. It is not aligned with the CTE Model Curriculum Standards or any pathway, and it is not a course for the personal finance graduation requirement. Check it against your pathway's standards and your district's course outline. Some unit titles use the words apprentice and training because the units were written with first jobs and training places in mind, so expect to adjust a few references for your students. Team use needs a message to Teach Lessons first. You can exchange it within 7 days for store credit if it is not a fit.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Is this aligned to the California CTE Model Curriculum Standards?
No. The units were not written to the CTE Model Curriculum Standards, which the California Department of Education says are being revised, and they are not approved for any industry sector or pathway. Compare them with the standards for your pathway and your course outline, and use them where the skills match.
Can it count as the new personal finance course?
No. California's one-semester personal finance requirement begins with pupils graduating in 2030–31, and this bundle is not designed or approved as that course. It includes one financial literacy unit. For a fuller money starting point, look at the Personal Finance Starter Bundle, and check any course plan with your district.
Which students is it written for?
Grades 9–12. The units focus on the first job or training place: applying, communicating at work, handling customers, managing time and working in teams. They fit CTE courses, advisory and work-based learning, and suit students who are starting to apply for part-time jobs, internships or their first training place.
Do students need computers or AI tools?
The bundle includes no software or accounts. Materials are worksheets, activities, slides and answer keys for print or digital use. If you want students to try AI tools during the AI unit, use only what your school allows and follow its policies on student use.
How long will the eight units take?
There is no fixed pacing. Taught in full, the eight units can fill a large part of a semester; taught selectively, two or three can cover a quarter of advisory time. Read through each unit to estimate how many periods it needs with your students.
Can our CTE department share one purchase?
The licence covers your own teaching. If several teachers or a whole department want to use the units, send Teach Lessons a short message before buying so team use can be arranged. Files may not be posted on public sites or passed to other schools.
