The teaching problem
Differentiation That Does Not Lower Expectations
The common version of differentiation quietly changes the destination. Weaker students get recall questions, stronger students get the thinking, and by the end of the unit the gap has widened rather than closed. What has to vary is the support, not the target. A heavily scaffolded free-body diagram sheet can still ask for the same completed diagram; it just supplies the object outline, a labeled starting arrow and a checklist of forces to consider. The second problem is logistics. Four versions of a task only help if a class can use them without the room splitting into visible ability groups and without one teacher running four lessons at once, which means the plenary, the vocabulary and the answers all have to stay shared.
A sequence that works
Running Four Tiers in One Room
A working pattern for a unit rather than a single lesson. It assumes you start without knowing the class well and want the tiering to become more accurate, and less visible, as the weeks go on.
- One shared task firstEverybody attempts the untiered version for ten minutes. What they produce tells you more about placement than last year's grades, and it gives the class a common reference point.
- Set the floor deliberatelyDecide what every student will be able to do by Friday, then check that the most scaffolded sheet still leads there rather than stopping at definitions and labeling.
- Let students pick a tierPut all four versions on the desk and describe them by what they offer, not by difficulty. Most classes self-select reasonably; a quiet correction fixes the few who do not.
- Same plenary for everyoneClose the lesson on the hardest shared idea, using work from more than one tier on the board, so the conversation stays whole even though the practice did not.
- Move students between tiersRevisit placement after each assessed piece and say so openly. A tier that never changes stops being differentiation and becomes a label the whole class can read.
Where it goes wrong
Grading Tiered Work Without Unfairness
Decide in advance whether the tier caps the grade, and tell students. Capping is defensible for a summative task if the tiers genuinely differ in demand; it is indefensible when the only difference is a word bank. The bigger risk is a mismatch between practice and test: a class that has worked all term with a sentence starter and then meets a blank page will underperform for reasons that have nothing to do with the physics or the text. Fade the scaffolding on purpose across the unit. Keep one common question on every version, at full difficulty, so you always hold comparable evidence from the whole class.

Frequently asked questions
What actually differs between the four levels?
The demand changes through the amount of structure given, not the content covered. Lower tiers supply more of the setup: a partially drawn diagram, a worked first example, a word bank of the technical terms, a shorter text extract. Higher tiers remove those and add open questions where the method has to be chosen rather than followed. The final answer a student is working toward stays recognisably the same task.
Do I have to print all four versions?
No, and most teachers do not. Two adjacent levels usually cover a class, and once you know the group you will often print one tier plus a small pile of the next one up. The files are editable, so mixing questions from two versions onto one sheet is straightforward. Printing everything mainly makes sense for the first task with a class you have never taught.
Does this help students still learning English?
The lower tiers help with access because they shorten text and supply vocabulary, which removes some of the language load from a task that is not testing language. That is not the same as reduced expectations, and it should not become a permanent placement. Where the barrier is reading rather than subject knowledge, pair the vocabulary support from a lower tier with the questions from a higher one.
