A Fractions Unit for Grades 6–7: All Four Operations
A Fractions Unit for Grades 6–7: All Four Operations
Teachers who need a fractions unit for sixth or seventh grade can use Fractions Complete, written for Years 6–7 and covering adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. Buy it on its own, or get it in the Middle School Math Starter Bundle with Algebra Basics, a compass constructions workbook and the Growing Math Bundle teaching kit, for $54.99 instead of the $77.96 the four parts cost separately.
See the fractions workbook →Fractions Complete is a fractions workbook written for Years 6–7 that covers adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. It is sold on its own and inside the Middle School Math Starter Bundle ($54.99; $77.96 for the parts separately), which also contains Algebra Basics on expressions, a compass and ruler constructions workbook for Grades 7–9, and the Growing Math Bundle teaching kit for Grades 5–9. The bundle is not a full-year course.

The real problem
Why fraction operations still trip up grade 6 and 7 students
By sixth and seventh grade, fraction operations should be routine, yet they remain one of the most common sources of errors in middle school math. Students add numerators and denominators straight across, so one-half plus one-third becomes two-fifths. They find a common denominator when multiplying, where none is needed, and forget it when adding. Division is worse: keep, change, flip gets applied mechanically, and nobody can explain why dividing by one-quarter makes a number four times bigger. These errors are not just carelessness. Each operation follows a different logic, and students who learned them as separate rules mix the rules up under pressure. The cost shows up later in algebra, where rational expressions, slopes and solving equations with fractional coefficients all assume fraction fluency. Seventh grade teachers in particular often find that a third of the class never secured these skills and have to reteach them without derailing the year. What helps is a workbook that treats all four operations together, so students can compare them, see why each works the way it does, and practice enough to stop guessing.
Why it fits
How Fractions Complete handles the four operations
One workbook covering every operation lets students see the differences between them instead of collecting separate rules.
- Adding and subtracting fractions are treated together, so the common-denominator idea is learned once and reused.
- Multiplying fractions gets its own section, separating it clearly from the addition rules students tend to mix in.
- Dividing fractions is covered as its own operation, the place where most students rely on memorized tricks.
- Written for Years 6–7, it suits first teaching in grade 6 and focused repair in grade 7.
- As a single workbook, it fits a concentrated fractions unit or a reteach block before algebra.
- In the bundle, Algebra Basics follows naturally, applying fraction skills to expressions.
Getting started
A suggested fractions unit sequence
This order is a suggestion; the workbook does not prescribe days. Grade 7 classes doing repair work can move faster.
- Diagnose with four quick problemsGive one problem per operation before starting. The pattern of errors tells you whether students mix rules, lack common denominators or simply need practice. Note each pattern.
- Adding and subtracting firstWork through the adding and subtracting sections. Ask students to estimate each sum first, so two-fifths for one-half plus one-third looks obviously wrong. Use friendly denominators.
- Multiplying as its own ideaMove to multiplication and stress that no common denominator is needed. Contrast a multiplication and an addition problem side by side to break the habit of mixing them.
- Division with meaningTeach division with the workbook pages and ask how many quarters fit in a whole number. Students who see that idea rely less on memorized flipping.
- Mixed practice and recheckEnd with mixed problems where students must choose the operation and method. Repeat the opening diagnostic to show the class how far they have come.
What to buy
Workbook alone or the starter bundle
If fractions are your only need, Fractions Complete on its own is the lowest-cost option. If you will also teach algebraic expressions or want a constructions unit and broader teaching material, the Middle School Math Starter Bundle at $54.99 covers four resources that cost $77.96 bought separately. For students moving straight into Algebra 1, the Algebra 1 Pathway Bundle ($44.99) covers equations, linear functions and quadratics. The High School Data & Statistics Bundle is aimed at Grades 10–12. TEACHMORE15 does not apply to bundles or single workbooks.
Honest limits
Where the fractions unit stops
Fractions Complete focuses on the four operations. Mixed numbers, decimals and percentages, ratio and fraction word problems in context are not listed as part of it, so check the product page and add what your requirements call for. It does not include a pacing guide or digital practice. Compare the content against your grade 6 or 7 standards. The licence covers your own class; message Teach Lessons first if your department wants to share it. A 7-day exchange for store credit of equal value is available if it is not a fit.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does the fractions unit align with grade 6 or 7 standards?
No alignment or endorsement claim is made. Fractions Complete is written for Years 6–7 and covers adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. These operations appear in most grade 6 programs and are reviewed in grade 7, but check the content against your own state or district standards.
Can I use it to reteach seventh graders?
Yes, and many teachers will. Seventh graders who mix up operations benefit from a workbook that puts all four side by side. Use a quick diagnostic first and focus on the operations that cause the most errors, so stronger students are not stuck repeating skills they already have.
Does it cover mixed numbers?
The workbook is described by its four operations, and mixed numbers are not listed separately. Check the product page for the full list of contents, and plan extra mixed-number practice if your requirements emphasize it, since mixed numbers often cause errors in multiplication and division.
Is it too much for fifth graders?
It is written for Years 6–7. Strong fifth graders may handle adding and subtracting, but multiplying and dividing fractions are usually taught later. For younger students, the Elementary Math Units Bundle has a visual fractions unit for Grades 3–5. Using that first and moving to Fractions Complete later gives younger students a smoother path.
Why buy the bundle instead of the workbook?
Only if you will use more of it. The bundle adds Algebra Basics on expressions, a constructions workbook and a Grades 5–9 teaching kit. If you only need fractions, the single workbook costs less. Teachers who will move from fractions straight into expressions with the same class usually find the bundle the better buy.
How is it delivered?
As a digital download. You get a link by email right after purchase, and the files stay in your customer account under Orders. There is no shipping and no waiting. You can print the diagnostic and the first section on adding fractions the same day, and download the files again later if needed.
