The real problem

Career readiness in Illinois is spread across several requirements

Illinois has no single career readiness course that every student takes, so the material ends up spread across classes. CTE is organized through Programs of Study, with ISBE Model Programs of Study and a state Perkins V plan, and every program needs the employability skills employers ask about: writing an email, handling a customer, working in a team. Personal finance has no standalone graduation course; a semester within the social studies requirement may include a financial literacy course. Separately, consumer education must be taught in Grades 9–12 under 105 ILCS 5/27-12.1. Graduation also includes one year of a course with intensive instruction in computer literacy, which can be an English, social studies or other course. For a teacher, career content therefore tends to land in an advisory block, an introductory CTE class or a business elective, often with little planning time and students who range from those holding a part-time job to those who have never written a résumé. The practical problem is finding lessons concrete enough for sixteen-year-olds that touch several of these threads and fit whatever course slot your school has created.

Why it fits

How the units connect to Illinois course slots

Use these as suggestions. Your school decides which course a unit belongs to, and you check the fit against that course's requirements.

  • Handling Money and Debt Prevention can open a consumer education or financial literacy segment.
  • Application Training gives any Program of Study pathway ready cover letter, CV and interview practice.
  • Digitalisation and AI in the World of Work adds a technology thread to a business or advisory course.
  • Business Letter and Professional Email Communication offers practical writing work for an English or CTE class.
  • Customer conversation and conflict units prepare students for work-based learning placements and part-time jobs.
  • Time Management and Study Methods suits a ninth-grade advisory as well as a senior CTE course.

Getting started

A semester outline you can adapt

This order is a suggestion for one semester; stretch or compress it to fit your Illinois course.

  1. Start with time and teamworkOpen with Time Management and Study Methods, then Conflict and Team Management. Students settle into routines and group work before the units that ask them to present or role-play.
  2. Move to workplace communicationTeach Business Letter and Professional Email, then Presenting and giving talks. Students draft an email to an employer as practice and give a short talk to the class.
  3. Run application trainingUse the Application Training unit for cover letters, CVs and mock interviews. If your school holds a career fair or job shadow day, time this unit just before it.
  4. Add money and debtTeach Handling Money and Debt Prevention once students have thought about first jobs. Coordinate with whoever teaches your school's financial literacy semester so the two courses do not repeat each other.
  5. Close with AI and customersEnd with Digitalisation and AI in the World of Work, then customer conversations and conflicts. Students discuss how the jobs they want may change and practice handling a difficult customer.

What to buy

Which bundle suits your Illinois course

For a career readiness, advisory or intro CTE course, the Career Readiness Curriculum Bundle at $99.99 covers the most ground; the eight units cost $199.92 separately. If your assignment is the financial literacy semester inside social studies, the Personal Finance Starter Bundle ($59.99, parts $78.94) is the closer match, with a course launch lesson, SMART goals and percentages and interest. Business, accounting and finance pathway teachers should look at the Accounting & Economics Fundamentals Bundle ($109.99, parts $224.91). If you only need the technology thread, Digitalisation and AI in the World of Work is sold alone for $24.99; it is already inside the career bundle.

Honest limits

Limits to know before you buy

The bundle is a starter set of eight units, not a full course and not an Illinois Model Program of Study. It is not aligned with or approved under any Illinois standard, and on its own it does not fulfill the consumer education, financial literacy or computer literacy requirement; your school and district decide what counts. It has no Illinois-specific content such as local employers or state labor rules. A CTE department that wants to share it should message Teach Lessons first. If it does not fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value; there are no cash refunds.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does this bundle count for Illinois consumer education or financial literacy?

Not by itself. It is not aligned with, approved for or written to any Illinois requirement. Consumer education must be taught in Grades 9–12 under 105 ILCS 5/27-12.1, and a social studies semester may include financial literacy, but your district decides which courses and materials count. Use the units inside that course if they fit, and confirm with your administration.

Is it a complete career readiness course?

No. It is eight units you can teach in sequence or one at a time. For a semester course, plan to add your own projects, guest speakers, site visits or credential preparation. The units give you a dependable core for the employability side; the local and pathway-specific parts come from you and your program.

Will it fit a particular Program of Study, such as health science?

The units cover skills that cross programs: communication, applications, teamwork, time management, money and AI at work. They contain nothing specific to one Illinois Program of Study, so a health science or manufacturing teacher would use them for the employability strand and teach the technical content from program materials.

Can it support the computer literacy part of graduation?

Illinois requires one year of a course with intensive instruction in computer literacy, which may be an English, social studies or other course. Digitalisation and AI in the World of Work and the professional email unit relate to that area, but whether a course qualifies is a district decision. Check with your counselor or administration before counting on it.

Do students need laptops or software?

No software or accounts are included, and the product descriptions do not require any. The units come as worksheets, activities, slides and answer keys for print or digital classrooms. If you want students to type emails or résumés, use the devices and programs your school already provides.

Can our whole CTE department use one purchase?

The standard license covers your own teaching. Use across a department or school is possible after a short message to Teach Lessons, so send one before buying or sharing the files. Questions about how your school wants to handle the purchase can go into the same message.
