Missouri Homeschool Literacy: Grammar, Writing and Phonics for Grades 1–6

For a Missouri homeschool, a literacy set like the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum can cover a good share of your reading and language arts practice, but it is one piece of your year, not a whole program. It gives you grammar, writing prompts and phonics or word study for every grade from 1 to 6, plus six reading comprehension stories, in one $49.99 download.

Quick answer

The Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum costs $49.99 and holds 24 packs: a grammar pack, a writing prompts pack and a phonics or word study pack for each of Grades 1 through 6, plus six reading comprehension stories. It suits families with children in different grades who want short, structured literacy practice from one source. It is not written for Missouri law, and it does not replace read-alouds, library books or a full reading program.

The real problem

What Missouri asks of a home school, in plain terms

Missouri's home school statute is RSMo 167.031. A home school has private or religious instruction as its primary purpose, teaches no more than four unrelated pupils and charges no tuition. No notification requirement is listed, and no testing or evaluation is listed either. The weight sits on hours and records. A home school provides 1,000 hours of instruction a year, at least 600 of them in reading, math, social studies, language arts and science, and at least 400 of those 600 at the regular home school location. The hour rules do not apply to students over 16. Parents keep a written record of subjects taught and activities, plus a portfolio of work samples or equivalent evidence. For a family with a first grader and a fifth grader, that creates a practical problem. Reading and language arts are two of the five core subjects, and you need work that fits each child's level and leaves a paper trail you can file. Buying separate grammar, writing and phonics books for every child gets expensive, and it rarely produces anything that looks consistent in a portfolio. This summary is general information; check current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource.

Why it fits

How the packs fit a Missouri home school week

The bundle does not decide anything about your legal obligations. It gives you organized literacy work that is easy to date, file and show.

  • Every child gets their own grade's grammar, writing and phonics pack, even in a three-grade household.
  • Completed worksheets drop straight into the portfolio of work samples Missouri families keep.
  • Grade 1 phonics writing prompts build phonological awareness before your youngest is reading independently.
  • Grade 6 academic word study works on roots and prefixes, useful before middle school texts.
  • Six comprehension stories, such as The Lighthouse Mystery for Grade 6, give a shared reading anchor.
  • Short packs slot into a daily language arts block alongside your own read-alouds and library books.

Getting started

A sample routine for two or three children

This is one way to use the packs. Adjust the days and order to your family's rhythm.

  1. Sort the packs by childPrint or open the grammar, writing and phonics packs for each child's grade. If a child is ahead or behind in one skill, use the neighboring grade's pack for that skill only.
  2. Monday and Wednesday: grammarWork through a grammar section with each child. Older children can start alone while you sit with the youngest, which keeps everyone working during the same part of the morning.
  3. Tuesday and Thursday: writingUse the writing prompts pack for the grade. Younger children get sentence starters and story starters; Grade 4 to 6 prompts add structure, word banks and editing tools.
  4. Friday: phonics and a storyFinish the week with phonics or word study and a section of a comprehension story. Read the story together if children are in neighboring grades, then answer questions separately.
  5. Log it as you goDate finished pages and note the subject in your written record. Keep a few samples per month in the portfolio so the year's progress is visible without saving every page.

What to buy

The full 1–6 set or a single grade?

With two or more children between Grade 1 and Grade 6, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum at $49.99 is the sensible buy; the same 24 packs cost $95.76 separately. With one child, a single grade pack may be enough. The Grade 1 ELA Pack ($12.99) and the Grade 3 and Grade 5 ELA Packs ($13.99 each) each include a reading story, and the Grade 1 and Grade 3 packs add a vocabulary trainer that the 1–6 set does not have. If a child is new to English, the ESL Newcomer Curriculum Bundle ($79.99, parts $159.91) covers everyday English, basic tenses and word families for Grades 2–6.

Honest limits

Honest limits for Missouri families

This bundle is not written for Missouri, has no Missouri content and makes no claim about Missouri homeschool law or the Missouri Learning Standards for ELA. Keeping your hours and records in order is your responsibility; check current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource. The packs are skills practice, so you still supply full-length books, read-alouds, spelling if you want it, and the other core subjects. The licence covers your own family's teaching; co-op or group use needs a short message to Teach Lessons first. Within 7 days you can exchange it for store credit of equal value if it is not a fit.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does this fit Missouri's homeschool law?

No product can promise that, and this one does not try. It is not written for, approved under or aligned to Missouri law or the Missouri Learning Standards. Missouri sets hours and record-keeping rules for home schools, and you decide how your plan answers them. Check current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource before you rely on any curriculum.

Does time on these packs count toward core hours?

Reading and language arts are among the core subjects Missouri lists for home school hours. Time your child spends on reading, grammar and writing work is time in those subjects. How you log and document it is up to you, so record dates and subjects in the way you already track your hours.

Is this a complete reading curriculum?

No. It is a set of skills packs: grammar, writing prompts and phonics or word study for each grade, plus six comprehension stories. It does not include novels, a leveled reading library or a step-by-step beginning reading program. Pair it with real books and plenty of reading aloud.

My children are in Grades 2 and 5. What do they each get?

Your second grader gets the Grade 2 grammar pack, the Grade 2 writing prompts with sentence starters and creative tasks, and the Grade 2 phonics and phonological awareness pack. Your fifth grader gets the Grade 5 grammar, structured writing prompts, phonics and morphology, and two reading stories written for Grade 5.

We are not native English speakers at home. Will this work?

The packs are written for children learning to read and write in English at grade level. For a child who is new to English, the ESL Newcomer Curriculum Bundle is a better starting point, with places and directions, simple present and past, pronouns and vocabulary training. Many families use both.

How do I get the files?

Everything is a digital download, available right after purchase. The link arrives by email and also stays in your customer account under Orders, so you can download again later. You can print the worksheets at home or use them on a screen. There is nothing to ship and nothing to wait for.
