New Jersey · HS career readiness

New Jersey high school teachers building a career readiness, work-based learning or advisory course can start from the Career Readiness Curriculum Bundle, eight ready units on money and debt, cover letters and interviews, professional email, presenting, customer conversations, time management, teamwork and AI at work. It costs $99.99. It is a strong base for the job-skills side of a course, not a complete state-approved program.

The real problem

What career readiness looks like in New Jersey high schools

New Jersey treats career readiness as a standards area of its own. The 2020 New Jersey Student Learning Standards for Career Readiness, Life Literacies, and Key Skills sit beside the academic subjects, so career skills are expected across the high school years and are not confined to a CTE wing. On the CTE side, the NJDOE Office of Career Readiness oversees approved programs of study organized around the Career Clusters. Graduation adds another layer: students need 2.5 credits in financial, economic, business and entrepreneurial literacy, and they arrive having had financial literacy instruction in each of Grades 6–8 under P.L. 2018, c. 167. The result is that an advisory teacher, a business teacher and a CTE instructor may all be asked to teach résumés, workplace communication and money skills, each with a different course code and none with a ready set of lessons. The hard part is practical: students need to rehearse an interview, write a professional email and handle a difficult customer, and you need structured material for each of those before the first mock interview day.

Why it fits

What the eight units bring to a New Jersey course

Each unit covers one skill students will use in a first job, training place or internship.

  • Application Training covers cover letters, résumés and interviews, the core of any work-based learning preparation.
  • Professional email and business letter work gives students a skill employers notice in the first week.
  • The presenting unit prepares students for capstone talks, internship reports or program of study showcases.
  • Customer conversations and conflicts suit students heading into retail, hospitality or health care placements.
  • Time management and team conflict units support students balancing school with a job or training.
  • Handling Money and Debt Prevention connects career planning to the financial literacy students met in Grades 6–8.

Getting started

A sample semester outline

This sequence starts with self-management and ends with the workplace of the future. Change the order to match your internship or placement calendar.

  1. Weeks 1–2: managing timeOpen with the time management and study methods unit. Students plan a real week of school, work and family commitments and spot where their time actually goes.
  2. Weeks 3–5: applying for a jobTeach Application Training. Students draft a cover letter and résumé for a real local posting and finish the block with paired mock interviews that you set up in class.
  3. Weeks 6–8: workplace communicationUse the professional email unit, then the customer conversations unit. Role-plays you set up around a customer complaint or a missed shift make the communication practice concrete.
  4. Weeks 9–11: teams and presentingTeach conflict and team management, then the presenting unit. Small groups solve a workplace problem and present their solution to the class or a guest.
  5. Weeks 12–14: money and AIClose with Handling Money and Debt Prevention and Digitalisation and AI in the World of Work, linking a first paycheck and early money habits to the way jobs are changing.

What to buy

Picking the right set for your course

For a career readiness or advisory course, the Career Readiness Curriculum Bundle at $99.99 is the main buy; the eight units cost $199.92 separately. Teachers whose course counts toward the financial literacy credits can add the Personal Finance Starter Bundle ($59.99, parts $78.94), but it repeats the debt prevention unit, so compare parts. Business and finance programs may want the Accounting & Economics Fundamentals Bundle ($109.99, parts $224.91). If you only need one lesson block on technology and jobs, Digitalisation and AI in the World of Work is sold alone for $24.99, though it is already inside the career bundle.

Honest limits

Where the bundle stops

These units are written for general high school use, not for New Jersey. They carry no NJSLS codes and are not aligned to the Career Readiness, Life Literacies, and Key Skills standards, and they are not part of any approved CTE program of study, so check them with your district and program coordinator. Eight units are a base, not a full course. Industry credentials, placements and employer partners are outside its scope. The licence covers your own classes; ask Teach Lessons before sharing with a team. If it is not right for your course, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is this aligned to New Jersey's career readiness standards?

No. It is not aligned to, endorsed by or approved under the 2020 NJSLS for Career Readiness, Life Literacies, and Key Skills. Many unit topics, such as communication, teamwork and money, appear in that area, but you should compare the units with your district's curriculum and course requirements yourself.

Can it be part of a CTE program of study?

It can be used as classroom material inside a CTE course, but it is not an approved program of study and carries no Career Cluster designation. Your district's CTE coordinator, working within the requirements of the NJDOE Office of Career Readiness, decides what an approved program must include and which materials belong in it.

Does it count toward the 2.5 financial literacy credits?

The bundle cannot grant credit. One unit covers handling money and debt prevention, but whether a course counts toward the financial, economic, business and entrepreneurial literacy credits is decided by your district under state rules. Confirm with your counselor or curriculum office before telling students a course will count.

Will it work for students with no job experience?

Yes. The units start from skills students can practice in class, such as writing an email, preparing for an interview or handling a team conflict. Students with part-time jobs can bring real examples from work, and those without can practice through class role-plays you set up around each unit's tasks.

Can I use single units instead of the whole bundle?

Yes. Every unit is also sold separately and linked from the bundle page. If you only need interview preparation or the AI and work unit, buying that part alone may suit you. For most of a semester, the bundle at $99.99 costs less than the eight parts at $199.92.

Do students need computers?

No software or accounts come with the bundle. The worksheets work on paper or in a digital classroom you already use. If you want students to type résumés or emails, they use whatever devices and programs your school already provides, and nothing in the units depends on a particular platform.
