Quick answer

The Middle School Math Starter Bundle ($54.99; the four parts cost $77.96 separately) gives new middle school math teachers four resources for Grades 5–9: the Growing Math Bundle teaching kit, Fractions Complete (adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions), Geometry with compass and ruler constructions for Grades 7–9, and Algebra Basics on expressions. It is a starter set of topics, not a full-year course, so you still follow your school's scope and sequence.

The real problem

What actually overwhelms a first-year math teacher

Your first year teaching middle school math rarely goes wrong because of the math itself. It goes wrong because of volume. You might have three preps, a pacing guide written by someone who left, a textbook that skips the practice your students need, and evenings that disappear into making worksheets. Middle schoolers also test new teachers. When a lesson runs short and there is nothing ready, the last ten minutes become a management problem. Content-wise, a few topics cause most of the trouble. Fraction operations expose every gap from elementary school, and many sixth and seventh graders still cannot explain why you flip the second fraction when dividing. Algebraic expressions are where students first meet letters standing for numbers, and a shaky start there follows them into equations. Geometry often gets squeezed to the end of the year, so you end up teaching it with whatever is left. A new teacher needs a small set of reliable, well-structured resources for these pressure points, so planning time can go into learning students' names and setting routines.

Why it fits

How the four parts support your first year

Each resource covers a topic new teachers tend to scramble for, so you are not building everything from zero.

  • Fractions Complete covers all four operations, the topic that most often reveals gaps from earlier grades.
  • Algebra Basics on expressions gives a structured start to variables before equations arrive.
  • Compass and ruler constructions offer a hands-on geometry block that keeps middle schoolers busy and focused.
  • The Growing Math Bundle teaching kit adds broader Grades 5–9 material to draw on as the year unfolds.
  • Printable resources mean you can photocopy tomorrow's lesson tonight without a tech setup.
  • Spanning Grades 5–9, the bundle stays useful if your teaching assignment changes next year.

Getting started

Your first weeks with the bundle

A suggested approach for a new teacher. The bundle includes no pacing calendar; align it with your school's guide.

  1. Read your pacing guide firstBefore printing anything, note when fractions, expressions and geometry appear in your school's sequence. Then mark which part of the bundle fits each of those weeks.
  2. Keep a backup lesson readyPrint a few pages from the teaching kit and keep them in a folder. When a lesson ends early or a plan falls through, you have something real to hand out.
  3. Teach fractions from the workbookWhen fractions come up, follow the Fractions Complete workbook in order. Spend extra time on dividing fractions, where students most often apply rules they do not understand.
  4. Start expressions carefullyUse Algebra Basics to introduce variables and expressions slowly. Ask students to translate words into expressions and back, which catches misunderstandings early. Keep examples simple at first.
  5. Save constructions for engagementUse the compass and ruler constructions when the class needs a change of pace. Hands-on geometry often settles a restless group better than another worksheet.

What to buy

What a new teacher should buy

If you teach Grades 6–8 and have fractions, expressions or geometry ahead of you, the Middle School Math Starter Bundle at $54.99 is the efficient buy; the same four parts cost $77.96. If you only need one topic, such as fractions, buy that part on its own. If your students arrive with gaps in basic number skills, the Elementary Math Practice & Warm-Up Bundle ($34.99) has practice packs up to Grade 4. For Algebra 1 classes, the Algebra 1 Pathway Bundle ($44.99) goes further. Teach-Life-Balance ($89.90) is a separate time-saving course many first-year teachers find relevant. TEACHMORE15 does not apply to bundles.

Honest limits

What the starter bundle will not handle

This is a starter set of four resources, not a full-year math program for any grade. It does not cover ratios, percentages, integers, statistics or equations in depth, so you will still rely on your school's materials for most of the year. Check every part against your school's requirements and pacing guide. Compasses and rulers are your own supplies. The licence covers your own teaching; message Teach Lessons first if your department wants to share it. If it is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is the bundle aligned to my state's middle school math standards?

No alignment or endorsement claim is made. The resources are written for Grades 5–9 and cover fractions, expressions, geometry constructions and broader material in the teaching kit. Compare them with your state standards and your school's pacing guide before relying on them for a unit.

Can I use it as my main curriculum this year?

No. It is a starter bundle of four resources and does not cover a whole grade. Use it alongside your school's adopted materials, especially for fractions, expressions and geometry, where many new teachers need more practice than the textbook provides. Ask a mentor which units in your pacing guide need the most support.

I teach sixth grade. Is all of it useful?

Fractions Complete, written for Years 6–7, and Algebra Basics fit sixth grade well. The constructions workbook is written for Grades 7–9, so it may be better saved for stronger students or later years. The teaching kit spans Grades 5–9. Many teachers find the bundle more valuable over two or three years than in a single one.

Do I need special supplies for the geometry constructions?

Yes, students need compasses and rulers, which are not included. Check what your school has before planning the unit, and consider having students work in pairs if supplies are limited. Run a short practice session with the equipment first, because handling a compass takes time for many middle schoolers.

Can I print it at school?

Yes. The files are a digital download, and printing copies for your own students is within the licence. Sharing the files with colleagues requires a short message to Teach Lessons first. Printing a full class set takes one trip to the copier, and the files stay in your account under Orders if you need to reprint later in the year.

What if it is not what I need?

Within 7 days of purchase, you can exchange it for store credit of equal value to use on another resource. It is store credit, not a cash refund. Contact Teach Lessons within that window with your order details, and use the credit for a resource that fits your teaching assignment better.
