Texas Homeschool Literacy Curriculum for Grades 1–6: Grammar to Reading
For Texas homeschool literacy, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum is a $49.99 set of 24 packs: grammar, writing prompts and phonics or word study for each grade from 1 to 6, plus six reading comprehension stories. It covers much of the reading and grammar side of your day. It is one piece of a written curriculum, not a complete program, and it does not satisfy any legal requirement on its own.
See all 24 literacy packsThe Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum costs $49.99 and includes 24 grade-level packs: grammar, writing prompts and phonics or word study for every grade from 1 to 6, plus six reading comprehension stories. Bought separately, the parts cost $95.76. It suits Texas families teaching more than one grade at the same table. Texas homeschool law asks for a written curriculum; whether this set, together with your other materials, fits that is yours to check.

The real problem
What Texas law asks of your literacy plan
Texas treats a homeschool as a private school. No state notice or filing is described, and if a public school asks, parents can send a letter stating that the child is being legally taught at home. The homeschool must use a written curriculum, which can include online programs, and operate in a bona fide manner. The required subjects are reading, spelling, grammar, mathematics and good citizenship; science and history are not required by state law. Rules change, so confirm the current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource. Three of those five subjects are literacy, and that is where many families feel the weight. Reading, spelling and grammar need practice several times a week, and with two or three children in different grades the planning multiplies. A separate program per child and subject gets expensive fast. New for 2026–27, Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA), created by SB 2 of 2025 and run by the Comptroller, are open to homeschool students, and textbooks or other instructional materials are listed as approved expenses. That adds a second question to every purchase: does this vendor and product work within the program's rules?
Why it fits
How the 24 packs line up with a family week
Each grade gets its own grammar, writing and phonics or word study pack, so every child works at the right level from one set.
- Grammar runs from Grade 1 sentences, nouns and punctuation to Grade 6 sentence types and parts of speech.
- Phonics and word study move from Grade 1 phonological awareness to Grade 6 roots and prefixes, useful next to spelling.
- Writing prompts give each grade structured practice, from Grade 1 story starters to Grade 6 editing tools.
- Six reading stories run from Daisy the Brave Little Duck in Grade 1 to The Lighthouse Mystery in Grade 6.
- A child working above or below grade level simply uses the pack for the grade that fits.
Getting started
One week, three grades, one table
A suggested rhythm for a family with children in, say, Grades 1, 3 and 5. Swap the days to fit your week.
- Monday: grammar at three levelsEach child opens the grammar pack for their grade. The Grade 1 child works on sentences and punctuation while the older two practice pronouns or sentence types, so you move between them instead of teaching three separate lessons.
- Tuesday: phonics and word studyUse the phonics packs as the base for spelling. Younger children work on sound awareness and word patterns, and an older child studies morphology. Add a short spelling list of your own if you want one.
- Wednesday: read and answerPick the reading comprehension story for each grade. Mia and the Moonlight Garden for Grade 3 or The Secret Garden Door for Grade 5 can be read aloud together first, then answered alone.
- Thursday: write from a promptEach child chooses a prompt from their grade's writing pack. Grade 1 sentence practice takes a few minutes; a Grade 5 structured prompt can grow into a full piece with drafting and revising over two days.
- Friday: catch up, then math and citizenshipFinish open pages and file the week's work. Mathematics and good citizenship are also required subjects in Texas and this set covers neither, so Friday afternoon is a natural slot for them.
What to buy
Full set or a single grade?
With children in two or more grades, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum at $49.99 (parts $95.76) is the better value. With one child, a grade pack may be enough: the Grade 1 ELA Pack costs $12.99 (parts $17.95), and the Grade 3 and Grade 5 ELA Packs cost $13.99 each (parts $19.95). The Grade 1 and Grade 3 packs also include a vocabulary trainer, and the Grade 5 pack has two reading stories. If your child is new to English, the ESL Newcomer Curriculum Bundle ($79.99, parts $159.91) covers everyday English, grammar and vocabulary for Grades 2–6.
Honest limits
What this set does not do
This is a general literacy set. It is not written for Texas, does not follow the TEKS and is not approved by any state office or by TEFA. It covers grammar, writing, phonics and reading practice; it has no math, no citizenship lessons and no ready spelling lists. You decide whether it, along with your other materials, makes up the written curriculum the law describes, and you print and organize it yourself. If it is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit, not cash. A co-op that wants to use it with several families should message Teach Lessons before buying.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does this curriculum satisfy Texas homeschool law?
No product can promise that, and this one is not approved or endorsed by any Texas agency. Texas requires a written curriculum covering reading, spelling, grammar, mathematics and good citizenship. This set addresses parts of reading, grammar and word study only. Check the current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource and build the rest of your curriculum around it.
Can I pay with Texas Education Freedom Account funds?
TEFA lists textbooks or other instructional materials as approved expenses, and homeschool students are eligible for 2026–27. Teach Lessons does not claim to be an approved TEFA vendor. Before buying, check the program's current rules and vendor list through the Comptroller's program, and keep your order confirmation.
Is it enough for spelling?
The phonics and word study packs build the sound and pattern knowledge that spelling depends on, and the Grade 6 pack works with roots and prefixes. There are no weekly spelling lists or tests, though. If you want those, build a short list each week from the words in the word study pages.
My children are at very different levels. Will one set work?
That is what it is built for. Every grade from 1 to 6 has its own grammar, writing and phonics or word study pack, so a Grade 4 child who needs review can use the Grade 3 phonics pack while a sibling works ahead. The set is also meant for multi-grade classrooms and tutoring for the same reason.
Do I need teaching experience to use it?
No special training is assumed. The packs are structured worksheets and prompts, and the reading stories come with comprehension questions. Look over each page before handing it to your child so you can explain grammar terms in your own words, especially in the upper grades.
How do I receive the 24 packs?
Everything is a digital download. After checkout the link comes by email, and the packs also appear in your account under Orders. Print only the grade you need this week, or keep the files on a tablet for a child who prefers working on screen.
