Getting Ready for a First Calculus Course
Getting Ready for a First Calculus Course
For teachers whose students will start calculus next term or next year, the Pre-Calculus Prep Bundle bundles three workbooks aimed at the skills calculus assumes: solving quadratic equations, working with higher-level functions and graph transformations, and a first pass at derivatives and graph analysis in a Grade 11 workbook. Use it to close gaps before the first calculus unit rather than during it.
See the calculus-prep bundle →To prepare students for a first calculus course, the Pre-Calculus Prep Bundle ($44.99) offers three workbooks for Grades 9–12: quadratic equations, higher-level functions and graph transformations, and a Grade 11 workbook on functions, derivatives and graph analysis. The parts cost $59.97 separately. It is review and preparation material for the skills calculus relies on, not a calculus course, and it downloads right after purchase.

The real problem
What actually sinks students in their first calculus weeks
Calculus teachers tend to say the same thing: students rarely fail because of the new ideas. They fail because of the algebra underneath. A limit problem stalls because a student cannot factor. A derivative is correct but the student cannot find where it equals zero. A graph-sketching task falls apart because the student does not recognize a shifted, reflected version of a function they already know. By the time those gaps appear in a calculus class, there is no room to fix them. The calculus teacher is moving on, and the student is now learning two things at once. Students who arrive with clean quadratics, a feel for transformations, and some idea of what a derivative measures have a much easier first month. So the window that matters is before calculus starts: the end of a precalculus year, a summer bridge, a review block in early fall, or targeted work with a small group who are signed up but not ready. Whoever runs that window needs focused material on exactly those prerequisite skills, not a whole textbook to search through.
Why it fits
How the bundle covers calculus prerequisites
Each workbook targets one area that tends to cause trouble in early calculus.
- The quadratic equations workbook rebuilds the solving and factoring that derivatives and turning points depend on.
- The transformations workbook helps students recognize familiar functions in shifted, stretched or reflected graphs.
- The Grade 11 workbook gives students a first look at derivatives and graph analysis before formal calculus.
- Three separate workbooks let you assign only the area a student is weak in.
- Written for Grades 9–12, so it suits juniors and seniors heading into calculus.
- The bundle saves $14.98 compared with buying the three workbooks individually.
Getting started
A suggested calculus-prep block
One way to use the bundle in the weeks before calculus. It is a suggestion, not a schedule built into the product.
- Diagnose with a short mixed quizWrite five problems: one quadratic to solve, one transformed graph to describe, one rate-of-change question. Sort students by which problems they miss before assigning anything.
- Fix the algebra firstStudents who miss the quadratic work through the quadratic equations workbook. Keep this group small and check work daily, since these errors repeat in calculus.
- Build graph senseAssign the transformations workbook to students who could not describe how the graph moved. Ask them to sketch before they calculate, to train the habit calculus needs.
- Preview the derivativeBring the whole group together for the Grade 11 workbook on functions, derivatives and graph analysis. Focus on slope as rate of change rather than on rules.
- Retest and hand offRepeat a version of the opening quiz. If you are not the calculus teacher, share results with the colleague who is, so they know who still needs support.
What to buy
Bundle, single workbook, or something else
If the problem is only one area, say factoring and solving quadratics, buy that workbook alone. If your incoming calculus students are uneven across all three, the Pre-Calculus Prep Bundle at $44.99 costs $14.98 less than the parts. Some schools also run a statistics track alongside calculus; for that, the High School Data & Statistics Bundle ($39.99) covers hypothesis testing, matrices and a data analysis escape room. If prep blocks and review are eating into your planning time, Teach-Life-Balance ($89.90) is a separate course on teacher time management.
Honest limits
What it will not do for you
This bundle prepares students for calculus; it does not teach limits, integrals or a full derivatives unit, and it is not a full-year course. It will not replace a placement process, and no alignment to AP or any other standard is claimed, so check it against your own course requirements. You still choose which students get which workbook and supply any extra practice. For use by several teachers in a department, send Teach Lessons a short message first. If it is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Is this aligned to AP Calculus or any state standard?
No alignment or endorsement is claimed for AP, Common Core or any state standard. The bundle is written for Grades 9–12 and covers quadratics, transformations and Grade 11 derivatives material. Compare it with the prerequisites your calculus course expects and decide how to use it.
Can I use it as a summer bridge assignment?
You can, as long as students are in your own teaching. The workbooks are printable and work as independent practice. Pick the workbook that matches each student's gap rather than assigning all three to everyone. Students working alone over the summer benefit from a short check-in partway through, so plan one if you can.
Does it teach limits?
Limits are not listed in the product description. The bundle covers quadratic equations, higher-level functions and graph transformations, and a Grade 11 workbook on functions, derivatives and graph analysis. Plan limits separately. Students who finish the bundle with secure algebra and graph reading will be in a better position when limits arrive in the calculus course.
How long does the bundle take to work through?
There is no fixed schedule in the product. How long it takes depends on how many gaps your students have. A group that needs only transformations may need a week or two; students rebuilding quadratics will need more. A short diagnostic at the start gives you the best estimate.
Can I buy just the derivatives workbook?
Yes, every workbook in the bundle is sold separately. Buying all three individually costs $59.97, while the bundle is $44.99. If your students are only missing the derivative preview, the single workbook is the cheaper option. If they also need quadratics or transformations review, the bundle saves $14.98 over the three separate parts.
Is there a refund?
Within 7 days you can exchange the bundle for store credit of equal value if it does not fit your students. It is store credit, not a cash refund. Look at the workbook previews on the product page before buying, so you can judge whether the level matches your incoming calculus group.
