Printable Grades 7–9 Math Units for San Diego Classrooms Without Phones
Printable Grades 7–9 Math Units for San Diego Classrooms Without Phones
San Diego Unified teachers who want math lessons that do not lean on phones or video can use the Middle School Math Core Units Bundle: six printable units for grades 7–9 on terms and equations, linear functions, the Pythagorean theorem, quadratic functions, percentages and interest, and probability with dice. Students work on paper, at the board and in pairs, which suits a class period with phones put away.

The real problem
Phones, Chromebooks and the San Diego math period
San Diego Unified's policy limits phone use during school hours according to each school's bell schedule; high schools allow phones before the first bell, at lunch and during passing periods. Starting in 2026–27, under the district's Learner-Centered Technology initiative, video-streaming sites such as YouTube are also blocked on district-issued Chromebooks unless a teacher turns them on for a specific instructional activity, and district devices run the Blocksi content filter. Math is one of the district's stated priorities for 2026–27, and the 6th grade middle school math curriculum is being relaunched with a mix of online, paper and hands-on learning. For a seventh or eighth grade teacher, the practical effect is a smaller toolbox for quick help. The how-to video a struggling student used to pull up on the phone is gone, and an explanation video on the Chromebook now takes a deliberate unblocking step. Those students need worked examples and practice in front of them on paper, while the students who finish early need something more than another row of the same problem.
Why it fits
Why these six units suit a phone-free math room
The units are classroom material first: practice, explanation and problems that live on the page.
- Terms and Equations gives seventh graders paper practice before they meet functions.
- The Linear Functions Unit works slope and intercept by hand on graphs students draw themselves.
- The Pythagorean Theorem unit focuses on applications students can sketch and measure in class.
- Quadratic Functions and Parabolas prepares eighth and ninth graders for high school algebra.
- Percentages and Interest uses everyday problems that make sense without a calculator app.
- Chance & Events runs probability with dice experiments, so students collect their own data.
Getting started
One way to spread the units across a year
Treat this order as a suggestion and match it to your school's course sequence.
- Start with Terms and EquationsUse the first weeks to rebuild expression and equation skills on paper. It is also a good check on who came in shaky after summer.
- Teach linear functions by handHave students graph slope and intercept on paper before any graphing tool appears. With Chromebooks filtered and phones away, the hand-drawn graph becomes the reference.
- Add dice and dataChance & Events works as a hands-on break between heavier topics. Students roll, tally and compare results with predictions in groups, then argue about why the class totals look different from each table.
- Bring in percentages and interestUse Percentages and Interest when students need everyday problems: discounts, tax and simple interest worked out step by step. It pairs well with the weeks before winter break, when attention runs short.
- Finish with the theorem and parabolasTeach the Pythagorean Theorem and then Quadratic Functions and Parabolas toward spring, as a bridge to Algebra 1 in your school's plan. Students can sketch right triangles and parabolas by hand.
What to buy
Choosing the right math download
Pick the Middle School Math Core Units Bundle at $89.99 if you want six core grades 7–9 topics; the units cost $144.94 if bought separately. If your class needs more groundwork, the Middle School Math Starter Bundle ($54.99) covers the Growing Math kit, fractions, compass constructions and algebraic expressions. For extra equation practice, the Algebra Foundations Bundle ($59.99) has four workbooks on expressions, equations and inequalities, real numbers, and ratio and percentage. For students moving toward Algebra 1, add the Algebra 1 Pathway Bundle at $44.99. None of these is a full-year course.
Honest limits
Limits worth knowing
These six units cover major middle school topics but are not a full-year course for any grade. They were not written for California or San Diego Unified, do not follow the district's relaunched 6th grade curriculum, and carry no Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (California) codes, so check each unit against the standards and your course guide yourself. You provide printing, graph paper and dice; no manipulatives are included. If your department wants to share the bundle, send Teach Lessons a short message first. Within 7 days you can exchange it for store credit of equal value; there is no cash refund.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Are the units aligned to California's math standards?
No. They are not aligned to, endorsed by or approved under the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (California), and they are not part of San Diego Unified's adopted materials. Many topics, such as linear functions and the Pythagorean theorem, appear in middle school math everywhere, but please compare each unit with the California standards and your course guide before teaching it.
Do students need a device for any part of it?
No device is required by the product descriptions. The units are printable worksheets and activities, and Chance & Events uses dice experiments. If you want to project an explanation from your teacher computer, you can, but students can do the work on paper with phones away.
Does this replace the district's 6th grade math relaunch?
No. San Diego Unified is relaunching its 6th grade middle school math curriculum, and this bundle is written for grades 7–9. It is extra material for practice, review and specific topics, not a substitute for your district's adopted program. Seventh grade teachers may find it useful for students who arrive from that relaunched sixth grade year.
Can I use it with an intervention or support class?
Yes, as long as the topics match. Terms and Equations and Percentages and Interest are often the right starting points for students who need to rebuild skills, because both start from familiar ideas. For more basic work, look at the Middle School Math Starter Bundle, which includes fractions and algebraic expressions.
When do I get the files?
Immediately after purchase. A download link comes by email, and the files stay in your customer account under Orders for later downloads. You can print the first unit tonight and come back for the next one whenever your pacing reaches it, from home or from school.
Can the whole math department use one purchase?
The licence is for your own teaching. For team or school use, send Teach Lessons a short message before sharing the files on a department drive or handing out copies to colleagues in your building or across the district. Redistribution, resale and public posting are not allowed.
