The real problem
Second grade in L.A.: where home practice helps
LAUSD's 2026–27 school year began on August 12, 2026, and by mid-fall most second graders have settled into the routine. Second grade asks a lot quietly: children are expected to read longer texts on their own, write several connected sentences and handle numbers up to 100 with some confidence. A child who slips in one of those areas often starts to dislike homework, and that is usually what sends parents looking for help. Families who teach at home face a different question. California's Department of Education lists several routes: a public charter school, a public school independent study program, a private school offering independent study, a home-based private school or a credentialed tutor. Families who run a home-based private school file a private school affidavit each year under Education Code 33190, keep an attendance register, courses of study and faculty records, and choose and supply all curricular materials themselves. Instruction is in English and in the branches of study taught in public schools, which for second grade include social studies; the state's Grade 2 theme is People Who Make a Difference. This is a summary only. Check current requirements with the state or a homeschool legal resource, and plan other materials for subjects this bundle does not touch.
Why it fits
Seven parts, seven jobs
Here is what each piece does for a second grader in Los Angeles, at a desk after school or at the dining table all morning.
- Grade 2 Phonics & Phonological Awareness keeps sound work going for children still unsure with longer words.
- English Grammar Grade 2 practices sentences, nouns, verbs and punctuation in short printable pages.
- Grade 2 Writing Prompts offer sentence starters and creative tasks for a few lines of writing.
- Two math packs on numbers to 100 give place value and operations practice from different angles.
- The vocabulary trainer builds word knowledge in small sets, useful for English learners at home too.
- No More School Struggles gives parents a plan for motivation, with a workbook the child fills in.
Getting started
A sample month with the bundle
Treat these weeks as a template. Families in independent study should fit them around what the program already assigns.
- Week one: the parent guideRead No More School Struggles before starting anything else. Agree on a set time and place for practice, and use the motivation workbook to let your child set a small goal.
- Week one: a quick baselineDo one phonics page and one page from Math Adventure Grade 2. Note what feels easy and what takes effort; that tells you where to spend the next weeks.
- Weeks two and three: rotateAlternate grammar and writing prompts on literacy days, and the two math packs on math days. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough for most seven-year-olds.
- Add vocabulary on the weekendA short vocabulary trainer set fits a Saturday morning. Say the words aloud together, then ask your child to use one of them in a sentence at dinner.
- Week four: look backLay the finished pages side by side. If you run a home-based private school, these can also go with your courses of study and attendance records.
What to buy
Grade 2, Grade 1 or Grade 3: which bundle to buy
Buy the 2nd Grade Practice Bundle ($34.99, parts $50.93) if your child is working at a second grade level in both reading and math. If math is fine and you only want literacy, the Grade 2 ELA Pack costs $10.99 (parts $14.96) and covers grammar, writing prompts, phonics and vocabulary. A child who still needs first grade foundations may do better with the 1st Grade Practice Bundle ($34.99, parts $50.93), which includes a reading story and Learn to Read at Home. A strong second grader can move on to the 3rd Grade Practice Bundle ($59.99, parts $95.90).
Honest limits
Read this before ordering
The bundle is not written for California. It has no California standards codes, no link to LAUSD and no approval from the state, so compare it with the Common Core State Standards as California uses them, and with your own program's rules, before relying on it. It does not include a reading story, science or social studies. Printing, pencils and any manipulatives are yours to supply. Charter or independent study families should check whether their program allows outside materials. Sharing with another family needs a message to Teach Lessons first. If it is not a fit, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value, not cash.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Is this aligned to California's second grade standards?
No. It is not aligned to California's Common Core State Standards, the History-Social Science standards or any state framework, and the state has not approved it. It covers common Grade 2 practice skills. If alignment matters for your program, compare the parts list with the standards yourself or ask your charter or independent study teacher.
Can I use it in a California home-based private school?
Many families use outside practice materials, and in a home-based private school parents choose and supply all curricular materials. Whether this bundle is enough for your courses of study is your decision. It covers English and math practice only, so you will need other resources for subjects like science and social studies.
My child's charter program has a materials budget. Can I buy this with it?
Teach Lessons does not claim to be an approved vendor of any charter or school program. Check your program's rules and vendor list before buying. If they need details about the products, the product page lists every part included. Buying first and asking later can leave you paying out of pocket.
How much time does a day of practice take?
Most pages are short. A reasonable suggestion is ten to fifteen minutes on school days for a child in LAUSD, and a longer morning block for families teaching at home. Watch your child's energy and stop before it turns into a fight. Consistency over the week counts for more than length.
Does it include reading comprehension stories?
The second grade bundle focuses on grammar, writing, phonics, vocabulary and math. It does not list a reading comprehension story. If you want one, the 1st Grade Practice Bundle and the 3rd Grade Practice Bundle each include a short story with questions. Library picture books also work well.
What happens if we do not like it?
Look at the product page and the list of seven parts before you buy. If the bundle still is not right, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value. That is store credit, not a refund in cash. Use the credit toward another grade level.
