Most students can already remove a blemish with a phone filter, and almost none can say what changed in the file when they did it. That gap is the teaching problem. The technical half needs concrete demonstration: a pixel is a fixed number of colored squares, so enlarging a small image invents nothing, and every JPEG save throws information away for good. The ethical half falls apart if you teach it as a warning assembly. Rules about manipulation only stick once a student has removed a trash can from their own photo, then removed a person, and felt where the line moved. Plan the unit so the two halves alternate rather than sitting in separate weeks, because the ethics lesson borrows its evidence from the file the student just wrecked.
A sequence that works
From Pixel Grid to Published Image
Five lessons that build the technical vocabulary first, then apply it to retouching decisions and to images students publish themselves. Each one ends with a file saved in two formats so the class can compare what survived.
- What a Pixel Actually IsStudents zoom until the grid appears, enlarge a small image and describe the mush that results, then compare the same photo exported for screen and for print.
- Layers and Non-Destructive EditingA composite built on separate layers, original file left untouched. Students save one layered working file and one flattened export, then reopen both and report what can still be changed.
- Retouching and Where It StopsRemove a distracting object, then remove a person from a group shot. The class drafts a written rule for the difference and tests it against a sports photo and a passport photo.
- Reading a Manipulated ImageTwo crops of one press photograph, side by side. Students write what claim each crop supports, then look at real caption wording and decide which captions are doing honest work.
- Portraits, Consent and CaptionsA portrait shoot where the sitter signs off on the final edit. Each image is published with a caption naming the edits made, and the class critiques the captions as closely as the pictures.
Where it goes wrong
File Errors Students Make Repeatedly
Four errors show up every year. Students upscale a 600 pixel image for an A3 print and blame the printer. They open, edit and save the same JPEG a dozen times, then cannot explain the blocky halos around high contrast edges. They flatten a layered file before submitting, which removes any chance of revision, so require both files at hand-in. Last, they treat anything found through an image search as free to use, and they screenshot instead of downloading, which drops resolution again. Set a technical checklist for submission: pixel dimensions, export format, source and license of any image not shot by the student. Grade the checklist separately from the picture.

Do I need Photoshop for this unit?
No. The tasks are written around actions that exist in any editor: selection, layers, cloning, export settings. Teachers have run it in GIMP, Photopea in a browser, and the free tier of Canva for the composition tasks. The download contains editable Word and PowerPoint files plus PDFs, not software and no video walkthroughs, so check that your school machines can open one image editor before you start.
How much media ethics knowledge do I need?
Enough to run a discussion, which the slides scaffold for you. The ethics material works from images the students make in class rather than from case law, so you are asking them to justify their own choices. If you want the workplace side of the subject, privacy and data protection are covered in separate resources on this site aimed at older or vocational groups.
Is this suitable for a computing class instead of art?
Yes, with a shift of emphasis. Computing teachers usually spend longer on file formats, compression and color depth, and shorter on the portrait shoot. Art teachers tend to do the reverse. The worksheets are editable, so cutting the composition tasks or the technical tasks takes a few minutes. Grade 7 groups usually need an extra lesson on selection tools before the composite.
