The real problem
Grade 6 in Texas is a world cultures year, not a geography year
Under the social studies TEKS adopted in 2022 and in effect for 2026–27, Grade 6 studies people, places and societies of the contemporary world. Grade 7 is the history of Texas from early times to the present, and Grade 8 is United States history from the early colonial period through Reconstruction. So a Texas middle school teacher rarely gets a course called geography. Geography lives inside the Grade 6 course, where students are expected to read maps, compare places and explain how land and climate shape the way people live, all while learning about many regions. The hard part is building both layers at once. Region studies need current information on cultures, governments and economies, and the map skills underneath need steady practice that a survey textbook often squeezes into a few pages. A teacher building a world cultures course alone usually runs out of time for the skills layer first. A change is also ahead. The new social studies TEKS adopted in June 2026 eliminate the Grade 6 world cultures course and move its content into earlier grades, and the new Grade 6 covers 1800 to 1900 with a heavy Texas focus. That begins in 2031–32, so for several more years the current course is the one you teach.
Why it fits
Where Geography Complete fits the Grade 6 course
The product is strongest on the skills students carry into every region you teach.
- Latitude and longitude lessons give students a working grid before they locate any region you introduce.
- Map elements and map types prepare students to read the political, physical and thematic maps you bring in.
- Climate zones and landforms help explain why people in different regions farm, build and travel differently.
- Natural resources and ecosystems lessons back up any discussion of how societies use land and water.
- Data and graph tasks build the habit of reading charts before students meet population or trade figures.
- Differentiated, no-prep worksheets suit mixed-ability Grade 6 classes and double as substitute plans.
Getting started
A suggested first semester
This is one way to pair the product with your own region studies. Adjust the order to your district's scope and sequence.
- Open with the tools of geographyStart with geographic inquiry and map elements: maps, globes, atlases and digital tools. Students learn to ask where something is and why it is there, a question that carries into every region later in the year.
- Teach the grid before the first regionCover latitude, longitude and relative location early. Students who can find a place quickly spend less time lost on the map and more time on the people who live there.
- Use physical geography as backgroundTeach landforms, weather and climate zones as short lessons ahead of each region. A climate lesson right before your own unit on a region makes the culture material much easier to explain.
- Add your region and culture studiesWrite or gather your own lessons on the contemporary regions in the TEKS. Pair each with a resources or ecosystems lesson from the product so students link the land to how people make a living.
- Review with spatial patternsEnd the semester with spatial patterns and people–place cause and effect tasks. Use the review activities as a check before a district benchmark, then return to single units in spring as needed.

Honest limits
What is not in the box
Geography Complete is a general middle school geography curriculum. It has no Texas content, no TEKS codes and no region-by-region study of contemporary world cultures, and it is not aligned with or endorsed by TEA. Check each unit against the Grade 6 TEKS and your district's scope and sequence. You supply atlases, wall maps, devices and current information on regions. One purchase is for your own classroom; a department that wants to share it should message Teach Lessons first. Within 7 days you can exchange it for store credit of equal value if it does not suit you.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does Geography Complete match the Texas Grade 6 TEKS?
It is not aligned with the TEKS and has no state approval. It overlaps with geography skills the Grade 6 course uses, such as maps, location, climate and resources, but it does not cover the course's regions or cultures. Read the Grade 6 student expectations, use the product where it fits, and fill the rest with your own lessons.
What happens to Grade 6 under the new TEKS?
Under the social studies TEKS adopted in June 2026, the Grade 6 world cultures course is eliminated and its content moves to earlier grades. Grade 6 shifts to the years 1800 to 1900 with a strong Texas focus, beginning in 2031–32. Until then the current Grade 6 course stays in place.
Can I use it for Grade 7 Texas history?
Only for skills. Grade 7 in Texas is Texas history, and this product contains no Texas history at all. Its map reading, location and physical geography lessons can still serve as warm-ups or review, for example before a unit on the regions of Texas that you teach from your own materials.
Is it useful for high school world geography?
Under the Foundation High School Program, Texas students take one credit of world geography or world history. Geography Complete is written for Grades 6–8, so a high school teacher might use it for review or for students who need foundation skills, not as the course itself.
Does it include maps, atlases or software?
No. You get worksheets, activities, slides and answer keys for print and digital classrooms. The lessons work with maps, globes, atlases and digital tools, so plan on the ones your school already has. Nothing physical ships, and no software or account comes with the purchase.
Can I teach only a few units?
Yes. The units build across Grades 6–8, but each can be taught on its own for a full unit, a short lesson, review or a substitute day. A practical approach is to teach the location units in the fall and return to physical geography whenever a region calls for it.
