The real problem

First grade literacy happens in small pieces

First grade is the year when reading clicks for some children and not yet for others, often in the same room. A teacher may have one group sounding out three-letter words and another reading short chapter books. Whole-class lessons cover the core, but the practice that follows needs to be short, varied and easy to hand out at different moments: a phonics page while you sit with a reading group, a sentence task for early finishers, a story with a few questions at the end of the week. The skills also come in separate threads that grow at different speeds. A child may hear sounds well but still write without spaces or capitals. Another writes long sentences but struggles to blend. Grammar at this age is simple, yet it matters: knowing what a sentence is, where the period goes, which word names a thing. Parents feel the same pressure at home. They want to help, but few have a teacher's sense of what a first grader should practice, and a thick workbook with no structure tends to end in tears by page four. What helps is a small, clear set that covers each strand on its own, so you can pick the one the child needs today.

Why it fits

Five strands in one Grade 1 download

Each part of the pack covers one literacy thread, so you can use the parts separately or rotate through them across a week.

  • English Grammar Grade 1 works on sentences, nouns, verbs and punctuation in first-grade terms.
  • Grade 1 Writing Prompts give sentence practice and story starters for children just beginning to write.
  • Grade 1 Phonics Writing Prompts build phonological awareness through writing as well as listening.
  • Reading Comprehension in Grade 1 – Daisy the Brave Little Duck gives first graders a story for comprehension practice.
  • The English Vocabulary Trainer for Grade 1 adds regular word practice next to the other four strands.
  • At $12.99 for the set, it is cheap enough to print for one reading group or one child at home.

Getting started

A week of first grade practice with the pack

One possible weekly rhythm for class or home. Move the days around to match your reading lessons.

  1. Monday: sounds and lettersStart the week with a page from the Grade 1 Phonics Writing Prompts. Keep it to about ten minutes and pick tasks that match the sounds you are teaching this week.
  2. Tuesday: build a sentenceUse English Grammar Grade 1 to practice what makes a sentence: a capital letter, a naming word, an action word and a period. Read each finished sentence aloud together.
  3. Wednesday: words to knowTake a short set from the Vocabulary Trainer. Say the words, use them in a spoken sentence, then let the child write or match them on the page.
  4. Thursday: write somethingChoose a story starter from the Grade 1 Writing Prompts. Let the child draw first if that helps, then write one or two sentences about the picture.
  5. Friday: read DaisyRead Daisy the Brave Little Duck in one sitting or in parts over a few Fridays, depending on the reader. Talk about the story before turning to the comprehension tasks.

What to buy

Grade 1 pack or something bigger?

For one first grader or one class, the Grade 1 ELA Pack at $12.99 covers the five strands and costs less than the $17.95 the parts add up to. If you teach a multi-grade room or have children in several grades at home, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum ($49.99) gives grammar, writing prompts and phonics for every grade from 1 to 6 plus six reading stories, though it has no vocabulary trainers. Parents who want guidance as well as worksheets can look at the Learning at Home Bundle ($79.99), and the Grade 2 ELA Pack ($10.99) is the next step up.

Honest limits

What this pack is not

This is practice material, not a complete reading program. It does not replace systematic phonics instruction or a full first-grade ELA curriculum, and it is not written to any state's standards or to Common Core, so compare it with what your school or state expects in Grade 1. You print the pages or use them on your own device. The licence covers your own class or family; for a whole grade team, message Teach Lessons first. If it is not right for you, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is the Grade 1 pack aligned to Common Core or my state's ELA standards?

No. It is not aligned to, reviewed under or approved for Common Core or any state's ELA standards, and it contains no standards codes. The skills it practices, such as sentences, punctuation, phonological awareness and reading comprehension, are normal first-grade work, but check the pages against your own state standards or school expectations before using them for required instruction.

Can a parent use this at home without teaching experience?

Yes. The parts are practice packs, so you sit with your child and work through a page at a time. Keep sessions short and stop while it is still going well. If you want more guidance on supporting reading at home, the Learning at Home Bundle adds parent guides with workbooks for Grades 1–4, including one on learning to read.

My child cannot read on their own yet. Is this too hard?

Start with the phonics prompts and the grammar pack, which work on sounds, letters and simple sentences, and read the story aloud together instead of asking the child to read it alone. If your child is still learning letter sounds, use the pack slowly, a page or two a week, alongside your main reading instruction.

Is there a reading story in the pack?

Yes, one: Reading Comprehension in Grade 1 – Daisy the Brave Little Duck. If you want more stories, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum includes six reading comprehension stories across the grades, among them the same Grade 1 story, and older readers can move on to the Grade 3 story Mia and the Moonlight Garden.

How do I see what each part contains?

Each of the five parts is also sold on its own and is linked from the pack's product page, so you can open each one and look at its description before you buy. The pack is meant for short practice in each literacy skill rather than one long workbook, which makes it easy to print only the pages you need that week.

When do I get the files?

Right after checkout. You receive a download link by email, and the files stay in your customer account under Orders, so you can download them again later. Print them at home or school, or use them on a tablet or classroom screen if you prefer digital practice.
