Quick answer

The 2nd Grade Practice Bundle ($34.99) gives a Grade 2 child short daily practice in literacy and math: English grammar, writing prompts, a phonics and phonological awareness pack, a vocabulary trainer, two math packs on numbers to 100 (Math Adventure Grade 2 and Interactive Math Mission) and the No More School Struggles parent guide. It is practice material for home, not a full-year program, and not written for Pennsylvania specifically.

The real problem

What second grade looks like in Philadelphia this year

If your child attends the School District of Philadelphia, 2026–27 is the third year of the K–8 English language arts curriculum designed by EL Education. A district review found problems with its phonics instruction, and some teachers had gone back to Saxon and Fundations. Parents hearing this often ask one practical question: is my second grader getting enough work on sounds and spelling patterns? Ten or fifteen minutes at the kitchen table can add steady practice on top of school. Homeschooling families have a different load. Under Pennsylvania's home education program (School Code section 1327.1, Act 169 of 1988), the supervisor files an affidavit with the superintendent of the district of residence, which for city residents is the School District of Philadelphia. In later years it is due August 1; in the first year, before the program starts. It includes an outline of educational objectives. Elementary instruction means 180 days or 900 hours, and the portfolio needs work samples and a log of reading materials by title. An evaluator reviews it, and the evaluation goes to the superintendent by June 30. Check current rules with the state or a homeschool legal resource.

Why it fits

How the seven parts help a Grade 2 child at home

Each pack covers one skill, so you can pick the one your child needs that day.

  • The Grade 2 Phonics & Phonological Awareness pack gives extra sound and pattern practice beside school reading.
  • English Grammar Grade 2 works on sentences, nouns, verbs and punctuation in short sittings.
  • Grade 2 Writing Prompts use sentence starters and creative tasks for children who freeze at a blank page.
  • Math Adventure Grade 2 and Interactive Math Mission both stay with numbers to 100.
  • No More School Struggles helps a parent handle motivation when homework turns into a nightly argument.
  • For homeschoolers, finished pages can go straight into the Pennsylvania portfolio as dated work samples.

Getting started

A simple home routine for the school year

Treat this as a starting point and adjust it to your child's energy and your family schedule.

  1. Read the parent guide firstSpend one evening with No More School Struggles, the parent guide on motivation and school struggles in Grade 2, before you hand your child any worksheet. Aim for short, calm practice rather than a second school day.
  2. Pick two short sessions a weekStart with two sittings of about fifteen minutes, one literacy and one math. Add a third once the routine holds, rather than starting big and dropping it in October.
  3. Rotate phonics and grammarAlternate the phonics pack with the grammar pack so your child sees the same sound patterns and sentence rules from two directions. Read the finished page aloud together.
  4. Keep numbers to 100 visibleUse Math Adventure Grade 2 during the week and save Interactive Math Mission for a Friday or a day off school, when a longer math session feels more like a game than homework.
  5. Date and file the finished pagesA folder of dated pages shows progress at parent conferences and helps you see which skills need another round. Homeschool families can use the same folder for portfolio work samples.

What to buy

Which Grade 2 download to buy

Buy the 2nd Grade Practice Bundle ($34.99) if you want both literacy and math plus the parent guide; bought one by one the seven parts cost $50.93. If math at home is already covered and you only want literacy, the Grade 2 ELA Pack costs $10.99 and holds the grammar, writing, phonics and vocabulary parts. If your child is still shaky on first grade skills, the 1st Grade Practice Bundle ($34.99) is the better match, and a child who is racing ahead may be ready for the 3rd Grade Practice Bundle at $59.99.

Honest limits

Before you buy, know the limits

These are practice packs and a parent guide, not a complete Grade 2 curriculum. They were not written for Pennsylvania, the School District of Philadelphia or its EL Education curriculum, and they contain no Pennsylvania content. A homeschool program also has to cover subjects such as science, geography, U.S. and Pennsylvania history, civics, health, music and art, which this bundle does not. You print the pages yourself. Teachers or tutors using it with several families should message Teach Lessons first. If it is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value, not cash.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does the bundle meet Pennsylvania's home education requirements?

No product can do that on its own, and this one is not approved by or aligned to Pennsylvania's requirements. It covers parts of English and arithmetic for Grade 2. Your affidavit, objectives, instruction days or hours, portfolio and evaluation are your responsibility. Check the current rules with the state or a homeschool legal resource before you plan the year.

Will it fix the phonics gaps people mention in the district review?

It cannot replace classroom instruction. What it gives you is a Grade 2 phonics and phonological awareness pack plus grammar and writing practice you can use at home in short sessions. If you are worried about your child's reading, talk with the teacher first and use the pack alongside whatever the school is doing.

Does my second grader need to take a standardized test as a homeschooler?

Pennsylvania's home education guide lists standardized test results for the portfolio in grades 3, 5 and 8, so Grade 2 is not one of them. Your child will reach Grade 3 next year, and the 3rd Grade Practice Bundle may help then. Confirm testing rules for your year with the state.

How much time should we spend each day?

The bundle is built for short daily practice, so fifteen minutes is a reasonable start for most second graders. Stop before your child is worn out, and end on a page they can finish. After a long school day, one math page may be enough. The parent guide is there for the days when even that feels like too much.

Is it a download or a printed book?

It is a digital download. The link arrives by email right after purchase and stays in your customer account under Orders. You print the pages you need at home or at a copy shop, and you can reprint any page that needs a second try later in the week.

Can I use it with two children?

Yes, within your own family's teaching, for example a second grader now and a younger sibling later. If you run a co-op group or tutor other families, send Teach Lessons a short message first. Please do not post the files online or pass them on to other households.
