The real problem
Second grade in Seattle this school year
Seattle second graders are learning reading and writing from new materials this year. In April 2026 the Seattle School Board approved a new McGraw Hill curriculum for K-5 English language arts, a seven-year adoption ready for 2026-27. New curriculum often means new homework formats and new vocabulary, and parents may not recognize what comes home. At the same time, the district's cellphone procedure, 2022SP, keeps phones off and away for the whole day in K-8 under Off and Away for the Day. For many families that sets the tone at home too: practice on paper, a short routine, then free time. Second grade is also where motivation can slip. Reading gets longer, math moves to numbers to 100, and some children start saying they are bad at school. Families who teach at home follow Washington's home-based instruction rules. A declaration of intent goes to the local district each year by September 15, or within two weeks of the start of a term, for children age 8 and over. State law lists eleven subjects, from reading, writing and spelling to math, science, history and appreciation of art and music, and an annual assessment is required. This is only a summary, so check current law with OSPI or a homeschool legal resource.
Why it fits
What sits inside the bundle
Five literacy and math packs for your child, plus one part written mainly for you.
- English Grammar Grade 2 practices sentences, nouns, verbs and punctuation in short pages.
- Grade 2 Writing Prompts offer sentence starters and creative tasks for a few minutes of daily writing.
- Grade 2 Phonics & Phonological Awareness supports decoding, whatever reading program the school uses.
- An English Vocabulary Trainer builds word knowledge a few minutes at a time.
- Math Adventure Grade 2 and Interactive Math Mission both practice numbers to 100.
- No More School Struggles gives parents a guide and a motivation workbook for discouraged children.
Getting started
Building a home routine in five steps
A suggestion, not a schedule. Most second graders do best with short, predictable sessions.
- Ask the teacher what is comingSend a short note to your child's teacher asking what reading and math skills are next. With a new reading curriculum this year, the teacher can tell you what to expect so your home practice points the same way.
- Set a fixed time and placePick one spot and one time, for example right after a snack. A predictable ten to twenty minutes on school days works better for most seven-year-olds than a long session on Sunday.
- Alternate reading and math daysUse phonics, grammar or writing pages one day and a math page on numbers to 100 the next. The vocabulary trainer fits anywhere as a quick extra when your child has energy left.
- Use the guide when it gets hardIf practice keeps ending in tears or refusals, pause the worksheets for a week and work through No More School Struggles. It is easier to rebuild willingness than to push through it.
- Keep a record of finished pagesPut completed pages in a folder. Homeschool families can bring them to the annual assessment. Families in Seattle Public Schools can share a few at conferences to show what you have practiced.
What to buy
The right buy for your second grader
Start with the 2nd Grade Practice Bundle at $34.99 (parts separately $50.93) if you want literacy, math and a parent guide in one download. If you only want the literacy packs, the Grade 2 ELA Pack at $10.99 gives grammar, writing prompts, phonics and a vocabulary trainer. For a child who still needs first grade review, the 1st Grade Practice Bundle at $34.99 is the step below. A strong second grader ready to move ahead can look at the 3rd Grade Practice Bundle at $59.99, which adds more math and a reading story.
Honest limits
Where this bundle stops
This is practice, not a full second grade curriculum. It is not linked to the district's new ELA curriculum and not written for the Washington State Learning Standards, so check with your child's teacher or the standards if matching matters. Homeschoolers still need science, history, social studies, health, occupational education and art and music from other sources. The license covers your family's own use. If the bundle does not suit your child, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value; there is no cash refund.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Is this aligned to Washington standards or the new district ELA curriculum?
No. It is general second grade practice, not aligned to the Washington State Learning Standards and not connected to the McGraw Hill materials Seattle Public Schools adopted. Use it as extra practice next to school, and ask your child's teacher which skills to focus on so home work and class work point the same way.
Can it be our homeschool curriculum for second grade?
It gives reading, writing, phonics and math practice, which are part of Washington's eleven required subjects, but not science, history, health or the arts. Treat it as the literacy and math core of a wider plan, and check current law with OSPI or a homeschool legal resource, since this is not legal advice.
Do I need to file anything for a seven-year-old?
Washington's declaration of intent applies to children age 8 and over, filed with the local district by September 15 or within two weeks of the start of a term. Many second graders turn 8 during the year, so check the rule for your child's birthday with your district or a homeschool legal resource.
My child says they hate school. Will this help?
That is what No More School Struggles is for. It gives you a parent guide and a motivation workbook, so you can work on the attitude before adding more worksheets. Start there for a week or two, then bring in short practice pages once your child is willing again.
Does any of it need a tablet or app?
No. Everything prints at home and your child works on paper. That matches the device-free day many Seattle students already have under Off and Away for the Day, and it means you can take a few pages along to a sibling's practice or a long car ride.
Can I buy only the math packs?
Yes. Every part of the bundle is also sold on its own, including Math Adventure Grade 2 and Interactive Math Mission. If you only need math, compare the single prices on the product page. If you will use the literacy packs and the parent guide too, the bundle costs less overall.
