The real problem
Second grade at home in Indianapolis this year
Second grade is when many children move from learning to read toward reading to learn, and when the first real frustration with school can show up. Indianapolis families have some extra things to keep track of in 2026–27. Indianapolis Public Schools now shares some specials teachers, in art, music and P.E., between schools after budget cuts, and the new Indianapolis Public Education Corporation must certify a November 2026 referendum by August, so school funding is part of the city conversation this fall. None of that changes what a seven-year-old needs at home: a little reading, a little writing, some number work, and an adult who notices when they are stuck. Home schooling families plan differently. Indiana asks for instruction equivalent to that given in public schools, 180 days of instruction a year and an accurate daily attendance record, but it does not set a required subject list, and the Indiana Academic Standards are optional for home schools. That gives freedom, and it also leaves the planning to you. A bundle that hands you the pages for each skill, plus advice for the days a child pushes back, saves the evening you would spend searching for worksheets.
Why it fits
How the bundle splits a second grader's practice
Each part covers one skill, so you can rotate through them and keep each session short.
- Grade 2 grammar sets cover sentences, nouns, verbs and punctuation in a few minutes each.
- Reluctant writers get sentence starters and creative tasks from the Grade 2 writing prompts.
- The phonics and phonological awareness pack works on sounds for children still building reading fluency.
- Two different math packs, Math Adventure and Interactive Math Mission, both stay within numbers to 100.
- The vocabulary trainer gives quick word practice that works on a car ride or before bed.
- For the hard days, the No More School Struggles guide and workbook speak to parents about motivation.
Getting started
How to set up practice in your home
Treat the steps below as a starting point and reorder them to fit your child and your evenings.
- Watch for frustration firstIf your child says school is boring or too hard, begin with No More School Struggles rather than a worksheet. The guide and workbook are written for exactly that moment.
- Rotate skills across the weekDo phonics one day, grammar the next, then a writing prompt. Switching skills keeps sessions fresh and gives you a picture of where your child is strong.
- Give math its own two daysUse the two packs on numbers to 100 twice a week. Counting objects at home, like coins or blocks, makes place value easier to see.
- Keep an attendance-style logIf you home school, note the date and what you covered each day. Indiana expects home schools to keep a daily attendance record, so a simple log helps.
- Look back after six weeksCompare early pages with recent ones. Look at handwriting, spelling and how quickly your child solves number problems, then adjust which parts you use more.
What to buy
One grade, the grade below, or the grade above
Most families will be well served by the 2nd Grade Practice Bundle at $34.99; separately, its seven parts total $50.93. Literacy without math or a parent guide comes cheaper in the Grade 2 ELA Pack ($10.99), with grammar, writing prompts, phonics and a vocabulary trainer. A child who still needs first grade basics may do better with the 1st Grade Practice Bundle ($34.99), and one who is racing ahead can move to the 3rd Grade Practice Bundle ($59.99), which adds Grade 3 math warm-ups and the Numbers to 1000 unit.
Honest limits
Gaps to plan around
Indiana standards codes are absent, and the bundle was written for no particular state or district, IPS included; hold it up against the homework your child brings back or your own home school plan. It covers literacy and math only, with no social studies or science. Expect practice, not a complete second grade year. You supply printing, paper and anything your child counts with. If it does not work for your family, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does this follow the Indiana Academic Standards for Grade 2?
It does not claim to. The bundle has no alignment to the Indiana Academic Standards, no approval from Indiana or Indianapolis Public Schools, and no Indiana-specific content. Indiana's English/Language Arts and Mathematics standards date from 2023; a quick question to the teacher about upcoming skills tells you which pages to use first.
Is it enough to home school second grade in Indiana?
It is a good base for reading, writing and math, but not a full program. Indiana asks for instruction equivalent to public schools over 180 days, so most families add science and social studies. For the current law, go to IDOE or a homeschool legal organization; nothing here is legal advice.
Do we have to register our home school with the state?
According to IDOE's guidance, registration with the state is optional and done once, and parents notify the child's school of withdrawal, ideally in writing. Rules can change, so confirm the current steps with IDOE or a homeschool legal organization first. Keep a copy of anything you send.
What if my child refuses to do the pages?
That is common in second grade. Start with the No More School Struggles guide, keep sessions very short and let your child choose between two tasks. A page finished willingly does more good than three finished through tears, and a short break of a few days can reset things.
Does the bundle include social studies?
No. Indiana's 2023 Grade 2 social studies standards deal with past and recent events and change in local communities, and this bundle does not cover them. For that topic, the store's Then and Now units on school, family and daily life, sold as a separate bundle for Grades 1–3, are a better fit.
How quickly can we start?
As soon as you check out. The download link is emailed to you, and your customer account holds the files under Orders, which makes reprinting easy. Print one phonics page and one math page tonight and you have the first two sessions ready for this week.
Ten minutes a night is enough to start
Each of the seven parts is described on the product page; pick the one your second grader will try first.
