Utah Homeschool Reading and Writing for Grades 1–6 in One Set

For a Utah homeschool family teaching reading and writing to children in more than one grade, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum gives you grammar, writing prompts and phonics or word study packs for every grade from 1 to 6, plus six reading stories, for $49.99. Utah leaves the choice of materials to parents, so the real question is whether this mix suits your kids.

Quick answer

The Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum ($49.99) works for Utah homeschoolers who want structured practice in grammar, writing and phonics or word study at each grade level from 1 to 6. It holds 24 packs, including six reading comprehension stories. It is practice material, not a complete reading program with novels or a daily script, so plan to pair it with read-alouds and library books.

The real problem

Utah gives you the choice, which makes choosing harder

Utah's homeschool statute is Utah Code § 53G-6-204. Since May 7, 2025, parents file a notice of intent, which replaced the old affidavit, with the local school board, once per child, and the board issues an excuse certificate within 30 days. Families who already filed an affidavit for a child do not need a new notice for that child. The statute lists no required subjects and no required number of instruction days, and it makes the parent solely responsible for choosing instructional materials and textbooks. Check the current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource before relying on this summary. That freedom moves the hard part to you. With a first grader still sounding out words and a fifth grader who reads well but writes run-on paragraphs, one grade-level workbook does not fit the kitchen table. Buying a separate language arts program for each child gets expensive and leaves you juggling different formats. What most parents in this spot need is short, leveled practice for each child in the same three areas, so everyone works on grammar, writing or word study at the same time.

Why it fits

How the packs fit a multi-grade Utah homeschool

Because every grade from 1 to 6 has its own grammar, writing and phonics pack, siblings can work on the same skill at their own level.

  • Grade 1 and 2 phonics packs build phonological awareness for children who are still decoding.
  • Grade 5 and 6 word study moves to morphology, roots and prefixes for confident readers.
  • Writing prompts at every grade let siblings write at once, each with a starter at their level.
  • Grammar runs from sentences and nouns in Grade 1 to sentence types and parts of speech in Grade 6.
  • Six short reading stories with questions give a quick comprehension check between library books.
  • You set the pace, which suits a state law with no fixed number of instruction days.

Getting started

A simple week with two or three children

This is a suggestion only. Adjust the order and the amount to your children's attention span and your family's schedule.

  1. Pick each child's starting packLook at the grammar and phonics packs one grade below and at grade level. Start where your child can work mostly alone, not where the birthday says they belong.
  2. Monday and Wednesday: grammar side by sideEveryone works in their own grammar pack for a short block. You check answers with the older child while the younger one finishes, then switch.
  3. Tuesday and Thursday: phonics or word studyYounger children practice sound patterns while older ones work on roots, prefixes and academic words. Read a few items aloud together to keep the youngest on track.
  4. Friday: one writing prompt for everyoneEach child picks a prompt from their own grade pack. Older siblings use the editing tools; younger ones draw first and then write a sentence or two.
  5. Every few weeks: a reading storyUse one of the comprehension stories as a check-in. Keep the finished pages in a folder if you want a record of what each child did during the year.

What to buy

One bundle or single grade packs

With two or more children between Grades 1 and 6, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum at $49.99 is the clear buy; the 24 packs cost $95.76 separately. With one child, a single grade pack can be cheaper: the Grade 1 ELA Pack ($12.99) and Grade 3 ELA Pack ($13.99) each add a vocabulary trainer for that grade, and the Grade 5 ELA Pack ($13.99) adds a second reading story. If your child is learning English as a second language, the ESL Newcomer Curriculum Bundle ($79.99, parts $159.91) starts with everyday English, simple tenses and word families.

Honest limits

Limits to know before you buy

These packs are not written for Utah and contain nothing Utah-specific. They do not follow any Utah ELA standards, so compare them with whatever goals you set for your children. They are practice packs, not a full-year reading program: you provide books, read-alouds and spelling lists if you use them. Printing is on you. The licence is for teaching your own children; a co-op or learning group should message Teach Lessons first. Within 7 days you can swap an unsuitable purchase for store credit of equal value. There is no cash refund.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does this meet Utah's homeschool requirements?

Utah's statute lists no required subjects and leaves the choice of materials to the parent, so there is no state list this bundle has to match. It is not approved, endorsed or aligned with any Utah standards. Because laws change, check the current rules under Utah Code § 53G-6-204 with the state or a homeschool legal resource before you plan your year.

Do I need to file anything before using it?

Buying curriculum does not require any filing. Teaching your child at home in Utah involves a notice of intent with your local school board, once per child, under the rules in place since May 7, 2025. This page cannot give legal advice, so confirm the steps with your district or a homeschool legal resource.

Is it enough to teach a child to read from scratch?

No. The Grade 1 phonics and grammar packs give structured practice, but there is no step-by-step beginning reading program with daily scripts. For an emerging reader, pair the packs with a decoding method and plenty of reading aloud. The separate Learning at Home Bundle includes a Learn to Read at Home parent guide if you want more guidance.

Can I print the same pack for two children?

Yes. For children you teach yourself, the licence covers printing what you need. If you teach other families' children in a co-op or pod, write to Teach Lessons first, since use beyond your own teaching needs a quick agreement. Posting or sharing the files online is not allowed in any case.

What if my child is between grades?

That is common, and it is one reason the bundle spans six grades. Use the grammar pack from one grade and the writing pack from another if that matches your child better. Nothing in the packs depends on finishing the grade before, so mixing levels does no harm.

How quickly can we start?

Right after checkout. The download link arrives by email and stays in your customer account under Orders, so you could print the first grammar page that afternoon. Nothing is mailed, and no app is needed. Most parents find it easier to print one pack at a time rather than all 24 at once.
