The real problem
Choosing an Iowa option shapes how you plan literacy
Iowa families pick one of several legal routes, and each asks for something different. Under Independent Private Instruction there is no routine filing; you respond in writing only if the superintendent or the Department of Education asks, and the listed subjects are math, reading and language arts, science and social studies. The Opt-Out route has no filing and no testing listed. The Competent Private Instruction routes are more formal. With Annual Assessment you file Form A with your district, naming your child, at least 148 days of instruction and your textbooks or course outline. Through Grade 5 the subjects are reading, language arts and math, with social studies and science added from Grade 6. The yearly assessment can be a report card, a portfolio evaluation by a teacher or an approved standardized test. The Supervising Teacher and Home School Assistance Program routes also use Form A and 148 days. For reading and writing, that means you need either a clear outline to write on Form A, or a stack of work samples for a portfolio, or both. This page only summarizes; check current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource.
Why it fits
How 24 packs help an Iowa homeschool
The curriculum is built by grade and by skill, which makes both planning and record keeping simpler.
- Pack titles by grade and skill read clearly as a course outline on Form A.
- Completed grammar and writing sheets build the portfolio a teacher can evaluate at year end.
- Phonics work runs from phonological awareness in Grade 1 to roots and prefixes in Grade 6.
- Writing prompts move from sentence practice and story starters to editing tools in Grade 6.
- Siblings in Grades 2 and 5 can each work at their own level from one purchase.
- Reading stories such as The Lighthouse Mystery add longer texts with comprehension questions.
Getting started
A weekly literacy plan for home
A suggestion for one child; repeat it per child at their grade. Adjust days to your own 148-day or longer calendar if you use a CPI option.
- Write the outline onceList the grammar, writing and phonics packs for your child's grade and any stories. If you file Form A, that list can serve as your course outline for reading and language arts.
- Grammar two days a weekShort grammar sessions on parts of speech, sentence types and punctuation keep skills steady without crowding out reading time. Two sessions a week is enough for most children.
- Phonics or word study dailyYounger children work on sounds and patterns; older ones move to morphology and academic word study with roots and prefixes. Keep sessions short and frequent rather than long.
- One writing prompt a weekChoose a prompt, draft on one day, then revise the next. Keep the final copy in a folder; these pieces show growth across the year better than any single test.
- Close each term with a storyRead one of the comprehension stories together and let your child answer the questions alone. Save the answers for a portfolio or report card if your Iowa option asks for one.
What to buy
Full Grades 1–6 set or a single grade
Buy the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum at $49.99 if you have children in more than one grade or want room to move up or down; the 24 parts would cost $95.76 separately. With one child in one grade, a grade pack can be enough: the Grade 1 ELA Pack ($12.99), Grade 3 ELA Pack ($13.99) and Grade 5 ELA Pack ($13.99) each add a vocabulary trainer, which the 1–6 curriculum does not include. For a child who is new to English, the ESL Newcomer Curriculum Bundle ($79.99, parts $159.91) starts with everyday English, basic grammar and vocabulary.
Honest limits
What this curriculum leaves to you
It is practice material for reading and writing, not a full language arts program with novels or a reading list. There is no reading story for Grade 2, and Grade 5 has two. It covers no math, science or social studies. Nothing is written for Iowa, and it is not approved for any Iowa homeschool option or district program. Check your option's rules and decide what to add. Books and printing are yours. The licence covers your family; co-ops should ask Teach Lessons before sharing. If it is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value, never cash.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does this meet Iowa's homeschool requirements for reading and language arts?
No product can promise that, and this one is not approved by Iowa or aligned with the Iowa core. Each Iowa option has its own rules on filing, subjects and assessment. Check current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource, then decide whether these packs fit your plan.
Can I list it on Form A?
Form A asks for textbooks or a course outline. Many families list the pack titles for each child's grade, grouped by grammar, writing, phonics and reading. Whether that is enough for your district is a question to confirm when you file, since districts may ask for more detail.
Will the worksheets work for a portfolio evaluation?
Finished grammar sheets, phonics work and revised writing pieces make clear work samples. Keep them by date so growth is easy to see. The evaluating teacher decides what they want to see, so ask early in the year what format they prefer for a portfolio evaluation.
My child reads above grade level. Is that a problem?
Not with this set. Since all six grades are included, you can give an advanced reader the next grade's packs in one skill while staying at grade level in another. The same works the other way for a child who needs to review an earlier grade's phonics.
Can I use Iowa ESA funds?
Teach Lessons does not claim to be an approved vendor of any ESA or scholarship program. If you use any program to pay for educational materials, check its rules and its vendor list before buying. Keep your order confirmation email in case the program asks for proof of purchase.
How do I get the packs?
Right after purchase, as a digital download. The link comes by email and stays in your customer account under Orders, so you can download it again later. That makes it easy to print a fresh copy of a grade's packs when a younger child reaches that grade.
