Quick answer

For a Louisiana family that wants structured ELA practice for one or several children in Grades 1–6, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum ($49.99) is a practical base. It holds grammar, writing prompt and phonics or word study packs for each grade from 1 to 6, plus six reading comprehension stories. Finished worksheets also make tidy work samples. You will still add books for daily reading, and you decide whether it fits your home study plan.

The real problem

What a Louisiana home study year asks of you

Louisiana gives homeschool families two routes. Under the BESE-approved Home Study Program, a parent applies to the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education within 15 days of starting, with a certified copy of the birth certificate, renews every year by October 1 or 12 months after approval, whichever is later, and teaches 180 days. The program's curriculum must be of quality equal to what public schools teach at the same grade level. At renewal, families show progress with a packet of work samples or outlines, or with a passing LEAP score, a state-approved standardized test, or a statement from a certified teacher. The second route is a nonpublic school not seeking state approval, with an attendance report to the Louisiana Department of Education within 30 days of the school year start and 180 days of instruction. Either way, the practical question for reading and writing is the same: how do you keep each child moving at grade level for 180 days, with something on paper to show for it, when you are also teaching math, science and everything else? Families with two or three children at different grades feel this most.

Why it fits

How the packs fit a Louisiana home study year

Each grade gets its own set, so siblings can work side by side on different packs.

  • Grammar packs for each grade, from sentences and nouns in Grade 1 to sentence types in Grade 6.
  • Writing prompts move from sentence starters in Grade 1 to editing tools in Grade 6.
  • Phonics in the early grades turns into morphology and roots, prefixes and patterns by Grades 5 and 6.
  • Completed worksheets and stories can go straight into a renewal packet of work samples.
  • Six reading stories with questions give regular comprehension checks across the 180 days.
  • Packs stand alone, so a child working above or below grade level can use a different grade's set.

Getting started

A simple weekly rhythm for two or more children

A suggestion for families teaching ELA to more than one grade at home. Change the days to suit your schedule.

  1. Place each child by skill, not ageLook through two neighboring grade packs and start each child where the grammar and phonics feel slightly challenging. The grade label is a guide, not a rule, at home.
  2. Grammar early in the weekGive one grammar session on Monday and Tuesday while you sit with the younger child on phonics. Older children can work on their own pack and check with you after.
  3. Writing midweekUse one writing prompt on Wednesday. Younger children finish sentence starters, older ones plan, draft and edit with the Grade 5 or Grade 6 tools. Date every page.
  4. Story dayOn Thursday read one of the comprehension stories together or alone and answer the questions. Pair it with a library book so daily reading does not depend on the packs.
  5. File work for your recordsOn Friday file the best pages by child and month. If you follow the Home Study Program, this folder becomes the start of your work sample packet at renewal time.

What to buy

One grade or all six

Choose the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum at $49.99 if you have more than one child in Grades 1–6, or one child you expect to teach for several years; the 24 packs cost $95.76 separately. With a single child in one grade, a grade pack is cheaper: the Grade 1 ELA Pack is $12.99, and the Grade 3 and Grade 5 ELA Packs are $13.99 each, and they add a vocabulary trainer or extra story for that grade. If your child is new to English, look at the ESL Newcomer Curriculum Bundle ($79.99, parts $159.91) first.

Honest limits

Before you count on it for your home study plan

These packs are not written for Louisiana and do not reference any state standards or the Home Study Program. Judging if your plan is of equal quality to public school work at grade level is up to you, so compare it with what your local schools teach and check current homeschool law with BESE or a homeschool legal resource. You supply the books for daily reading and any spelling or handwriting program you want. The licence covers your own family. If the bundle is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit, not cash.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Will this count for Louisiana's Home Study Program?

No product can promise that, and this one is not approved or reviewed by BESE or the Louisiana Department of Education. The program asks for a curriculum of quality equal to public school at the same grade level; you judge that for your whole plan. Check the current rules with BESE or a homeschool legal resource before applying or renewing.

Can the worksheets go into my renewal packet?

Families renewing a Home Study Program can show a packet of work samples or outlines, among other options. Dated, completed worksheets and writing pieces from these packs are natural samples to include. What reviewers accept is decided by the state, so confirm what your packet needs with BESE before you rely on it.

Is this a full reading curriculum?

No. It gives you grammar, writing prompts, phonics or word study for each grade, and six stories with comprehension questions. It does not include novels, a leveled reading library or a daily read-aloud plan. Most families pair it with library books and their own reading list.

What if my children are in Grades 2 and 5?

That is the case the bundle is built for. Each child works in their own grade's grammar, writing and phonics packs, while you rotate between them. Because every pack stands alone, a child who is ahead or behind can simply use the next or previous grade.

We chose the nonpublic school route. Does anything change?

Not for how you use the packs. Families on that route report attendance to the Department of Education and teach 180 days, but there is no renewal packet. The worksheets still give you a record of what was taught. Check current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource.

How do I receive it?

It is a digital download. After checkout you get a download link by email, and the files stay in your customer account under Orders. Print what you need for the week, or use the materials on a screen. Nothing is shipped, and you can open the first pack the same day you buy.
