Seller payout calculator
Your payout is the sale price, minus a 3% payment cost, times 70%. This page shows each step, works through three prices and lists the payout at six common price points.
The formula, one step at a time
Every payout in the TeachLessons Seller Program follows the same two steps. First we take out the payment processing cost, which is always 3% of the transaction. What remains is the net revenue. Then the net is split 70/30: 70% goes to you and 30% to TeachLessons.
Written as a formula, your payout is price × 0.97 × 0.70. Multiply that out and you get 67.9% of the sale price. The price here means what the customer actually paid for your resource, after any discount and without sales tax or VAT.
We deduct the payment cost before the split so that both sides share it in the same 70/30 proportion. Neither of us carries the whole cost alone. If the numbers look right to you, the submission form is the next step.

| Per sale | Per year |
|---|
Your payout = price × 0.97 × 0.70 (67.9% of the price). No membership, listing or transaction fees. Price = what the customer paid, after discounts and without sales tax or VAT.
Worked example: a $3 resource
Small resources show how little the payment cost takes in absolute terms.
- The customer pays $3.00 for your resource.
- The 3% payment cost is $0.09.
- Net revenue is $3.00 minus $0.09, which is $2.91.
- Your 70% of $2.91 is $2.037, shown as $2.04.
- TeachLessons keeps the other 30%, about $0.87.
Worked example: a $10 resource
This is the price we use most often on our pages, because it is easy to check by hand.
- The customer pays $10.00.
- The 3% payment cost is 30 cents.
- Net revenue is $9.70.
- Your 70% of $9.70 is $6.79.
- TeachLessons keeps 30% of $9.70, which is $2.91.
Worked example: a $20 resource
Larger units and bundles follow exactly the same steps. Nothing changes as the price goes up, and there is no fee that kicks in or drops away at a certain amount.
- The customer pays $20.00.
- The 3% payment cost is $0.60.
- Net revenue is $19.40.
- Your 70% of $19.40 is $13.58.
- TeachLessons keeps 30% of $19.40, which is $5.82.
Payouts at common prices
The table shows what one sale pays at six price points. Amounts are rounded to the cent, and in each row the two shares add up to the net revenue after the 3% payment cost. Because the rate is the same at every price, you can scale any row: two sales at $10 pay you twice $6.79, or $13.58, the same as one sale at $20.
| Price | You keep | TeachLessons share |
|---|---|---|
| $1.00 | $0.68 | $0.29 |
| $3.00 | $2.04 | $0.87 |
| $5.00 | $3.40 | $1.45 |
| $10.00 | $6.79 | $2.91 |
| $20.00 | $13.58 | $5.82 |
| $50.00 | $33.95 | $14.55 |
What is not deducted
The 3% payment cost is the only thing taken out before the split. There is no membership fee, no annual fee and no sign-up fee. There is no listing fee and no per-resource transaction fee. The SEO work we do on your listings is included at no cost, as described on our free SEO page.
So the number the calculator gives you is the number that appears on your statement for that sale. If you list fifty resources and only a few of them sell in a given month, the others have cost you nothing.
Refunds, sales tax and VAT
Refunds. If an order is refunded, the sale is reversed and there is no payout on it. Your monthly statement lists each sale, so you can see which ones were refunded.
Sales tax and VAT. Tax is not part of the price we use for your payout. The calculation starts from what the customer paid for the resource itself, after any discount, excluding sales tax or VAT. If a teacher pays sales tax or VAT on top of the price, that amount is not split.
Discounts. If a resource sells at a discount, the payout is calculated on the discounted price the customer actually paid. A $10 resource sold at $8 pays you 67.9% of $8, which is $5.43.
Your own tax situation depends on where you live and how you sell. This page is general information, not tax or financial advice, and an accountant can tell you what applies to you.
Using these numbers to set prices
A flat percentage makes pricing simple. Whatever price you choose, about two-thirds of it reaches you. That leaves the real pricing questions where they belong: what the resource is worth to a teacher, how long it saves them, and how it fits with the rest of your catalog.
If you sell small items, our article on when bundles beat single resources looks at grouping them. For a row-by-row look at our payouts from $1 to $50, read the payout comparison article, and for the reasoning behind the split, see how the 70/30 split works.
When you're ready, the program overview explains the rest, and our page on adding a second sales channel shows how a listing with us fits next to the places you already sell. Then send us your resources.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my payout 67.9% and not 70%?
Because the 3% payment cost comes off first. 70% of the remaining 97% is 67.9% of the sale price.
Are there any fees besides the 3% payment cost?
No. There is no membership fee, annual fee, sign-up fee, listing fee or per-resource transaction fee.
Does the split apply to sales tax or VAT?
No. The payout is calculated on the price paid for the resource, excluding sales tax or VAT.
What happens to a refunded sale?
It is reversed, so there is no payout on that sale. It shows on your monthly statement.
Does the percentage change for cheap or expensive resources?
No. The same formula applies at every price, so a $1 resource and a $50 bundle both pay you 67.9% of what the customer paid.
