Louisiana Middle School Computer Science: Four Ready Units for Grades 6–9
Louisiana Middle School Computer Science: Four Ready Units for Grades 6–9
Louisiana middle school teachers starting computer science under the new K-12 standards can begin with the Coding & Computer Basics Units Bundle: algorithms, Python, binary and digital images, and how the internet works, in four ready units for $69.99. It gives students a foundation before the high school requirement arrives. It is not built on Louisiana's standards, so you map it yourself.
Open the coding bundleYes, the Coding & Computer Basics Units Bundle ($69.99) is a sensible first purchase for Louisiana Grades 6–9. It contains four units: algorithms and computational thinking, programming with Python, binary and digital images, and how the internet works. Each unit has worksheets on four levels, a reading text, a hands-on task, slides and full answer keys. It suits teachers new to coding, but it is not built on Louisiana's computer science standards.

The real problem
New standards, a graduation requirement, and a class to staff
On October 9, 2024, BESE adopted Louisiana's first K-12 academic content standards for computer science, effective statewide in the 2025-2026 school year. They are organized around five concepts: computing skills, networks and the internet, data and analysis, algorithms and programming, and impacts of computing. High school is changing too. HB 264 is reported to apply a computer science graduation requirement to students entering 9th grade in 2026-27, and the TOPS University diploma rule lists one unit of computer science for incoming freshmen from the 2027-2028 school year. Confirm with your district which requirement applies to which class. For a middle school, that adds up to pressure from both sides: students should arrive in high school with some background, and the teacher asked to provide it is often not a computer science specialist. Add Louisiana's instructional-day cell phone ban, in effect since 2024-25, and lessons cannot lean on students' own devices. The teacher needs units that explain the ideas in plain reading texts, offer tasks at several levels for a mixed class, and include keys detailed enough to mark work they are still learning themselves.
Why it fits
How the four units sit next to Louisiana's five concepts
Some of the five concept areas get direct attention and some do not. Read this as a planning view, not a coverage claim.
- Algorithms and programming: the algorithms unit plus a Python unit with print, variables, input, ifs and loops.
- Networks and the internet: the How the Internet Works unit gives a full ready sequence.
- Data and analysis: the binary and digital images unit shows how computers represent data.
- Impacts of computing: not the focus here; the AI & Cybersecurity bundle is the better source.
- Worksheets on four levels let beginners and confident students work on the same topic.
- Marking guides in the answer keys help a teacher who is new to computer science.
Getting started
A first semester of middle school CS
One possible order for a Louisiana Grade 7 or 8 elective. Your district's course plan decides the final sequence.
- Begin with algorithms, no computersOpen with algorithms and computational thinking. Students write step-by-step instructions and test them on each other, which works in a room where phones are put away and laptops are limited.
- Bits and picturesTeach the binary and digital images unit next, so students see that everything on a screen is stored as numbers before they write code that handles data.
- Follow a message across the internetUse the How the Internet Works unit to show what happens between typing a web address and seeing a page. The reading text carries the explanation for you.
- Write first Python programsMove to the Python unit: print, variables and input, then if statements and loops, and finish with the mini-project. Use whatever Python setup your school already provides.
- Grade with the marking guideUse the answer keys and marking guide for each unit to grade the Project-level tasks, and keep strong samples as models for next year's classes.
What to buy
What to buy for your CS class
Start with the Coding & Computer Basics Units Bundle at $69.99; the same four units bought one by one cost $99.96. To bring in the impacts of computing, add the AI & Cybersecurity Units Bundle ($89.99, parts $149.94) with AI, prompting, phishing, data protection, encryption and filter bubbles. If you want everything in one purchase for Grades 7–10, the Computer Science Activities Bundle ($119.99) has 10 units and 30 lessons, including Python and cybersecurity. A teacher who only needs coding can buy the Programming with Python unit alone for $24.99.
Honest limits
What you still need to check and provide
The bundle is not written to Louisiana's K-12 computer science standards and carries no standards codes, so compare each unit with the five concept areas and your district's course plan. Four units are a starting semester, not a full course. No software, coding platform, accounts or laptops are included; you use the devices and Python setup your school already has. The licence is for your own classes, and team use needs a short message to Teach Lessons first. If it does not fit, exchange it for store credit within 7 days.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does this follow Louisiana's K-12 computer science standards?
No. The units are not aligned to, approved by or reviewed against the standards BESE adopted in October 2024. Their topics touch algorithms and programming, networks and the internet, and data, but you need to check each unit against the standards and your district course plan yourself before you list it as coverage.
Will it prepare students for the high school CS requirement?
It gives middle school students a foundation in algorithms, Python, data and networks, which helps any later course. It does not count toward a graduation requirement or replace a high school course. Ask your district which incoming class the HB 264 and TOPS rules apply to.
I have never taught coding. Can I teach the Python unit?
The unit description says it works for students brand new to coding and for confident ones, and the reading text, slides and answer keys explain each step. Work through the first lessons yourself before class. You will need a working Python setup on school devices, which the bundle does not include.
Can students do this with phones put away?
Yes. Louisiana's instructional-day phone ban does not affect these units, which use printed worksheets, reading texts and teacher slides. The Python unit needs school computers for the coding parts; the algorithms, binary and internet units can run largely on paper. Check your school's own device rules for the computer lab as well.
Are the units usable in Grade 9?
The bundle is labeled Grades 6–9. Ninth graders new to computer science can start here, and the Plus and Project levels give stronger students more challenge. For older or more experienced students, the Computer Science Activities Bundle for Grades 7–10 adds more topics, including AI literacy, cryptography and networks, across 30 ready lessons.
How are the files delivered?
As digital downloads, right after purchase. A link arrives by email and the files stay in your customer account under Orders. You can print worksheets and project the slides from the same download. Nothing ships by mail, so you can look through a unit the same evening you buy it.
