Quick answer

The 3rd Grade Practice Bundle ($59.99) is a solid core for Grade 3 language arts and math at home in Montana. It combines grammar, creative writing, phonics, a reading story, a vocabulary trainer, two math practice packs, Grade 3 warm-ups, the Math Made Easy parent guide and the Numbers to 1000 unit. It is a practice bundle, not a full-year curriculum, and it is not approved by Montana or tied to its standards.

The real problem

What Montana asks of a home school, and where Grade 3 gets tricky

Montana's home school law is short, but it has real parts. Under MCA 20-5-109 you notify the county superintendent of schools in your county each school fiscal year, keep attendance records the superintendent can ask to see, and provide at least the minimum aggregate hours of instruction set in MCA 20-1-301 and 20-1-302. You also owe your child an organized course of study that includes the subjects public schools must offer as a basic instructional program under MCA 20-7-111. There is no state test for home-schooled students. Compulsory attendance runs from age 7 to 16, with exceptions, so many families are teaching third grade in the first or second required year. That is where the planning load shows. Third grade is when reading shifts from learning the code to reading for meaning, writing grows from sentences to short stories, and math moves into place value up to 1000. A parent who is also cooking, driving and teaching a younger sibling needs material that says what to do each day and has the answers ready. Please check current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource; this is a summary, not legal advice.

Why it fits

What is inside, and how it helps at the kitchen table

The bundle is ten separate Grade 3 resources. Here is how they serve a home school day.

  • Grammar Mastery and Phonics & Word Patterns give short daily language practice you can log as instruction time.
  • Creative writing prompts with structure help a reluctant writer get from one sentence to a short story.
  • The reading story with questions gives you a ready comprehension lesson and something to talk about together.
  • Numbers to 1000 teaches place value, comparing and number lines as a complete math unit.
  • Math Made Easy is a parent guide with workbook, written for adults teaching Grade 3 math at home.
  • Warm-up worksheets give a ten-minute start to each math lesson without extra planning from you.

Getting started

A simple weekly rhythm for third grade

Families set their own schedule. This rhythm is only a suggestion; stretch or shorten it to fit your hours and your child.

  1. Start with the parent guideRead Math Made Easy before the first week. It explains how to teach Grade 3 math at home and gives you a workbook to use with your child alongside the other packs.
  2. Open each day with a warm-upUse one Grade 3 math warm-up worksheet as the first task of the morning. It takes little time and shows you quickly what your child remembers.
  3. Rotate the literacy packsAlternate grammar, phonics and vocabulary through the week, and save one day for a creative writing prompt. Short daily sessions tend to work better than one long block.
  4. Teach Numbers to 1000 as a unitWork through place value, comparing and ordering, number lines and word problems in order. Use the answer keys to check work together and talk through mistakes.
  5. Log hours and fill other subjectsWrite each session into your attendance record. Add science, social studies and the other subjects in your course of study from separate sources so the year stays complete.

What to buy

Choosing the right Grade 3 set

Most families teaching third grade at home will get the most out of the 3rd Grade Practice Bundle at $59.99, against $95.90 for its ten parts bought separately. If you only want language arts, the Grade 3 ELA Pack ($13.99, five resources) covers grammar, writing, phonics, a story and vocabulary. If math is the worry, the Elementary Math Units Bundle ($69.99, parts $99.96) adds fractions and area and perimeter to Numbers to 1000 and a test prep toolkit. The Grades 3–5 Test Prep Bundle ($64.99) is mainly meant for classrooms preparing for spring state tests, which Montana home schools do not take.

Honest limits

Honest limits before you buy

This bundle is not written for Montana and has no Montana content or standards codes. It covers language arts and math practice only, so it does not give you a full course of study by itself, and it is not a full-year curriculum for either subject. Whether your overall plan fits MCA 20-5-109 is yours to check with the county superintendent, the state or a homeschool legal resource. You supply paper, printing and the other subjects. The licence covers your own family's use. If it is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does this bundle meet Montana's home school requirements?

No product can promise that, and this one is not approved by the state or matched to the Montana Content Standards. Montana asks for an organized course of study that includes the subjects in MCA 20-7-111, plus notification, attendance records and minimum hours. This bundle supports the reading, writing and math part. Check the full requirements with the county superintendent or a homeschool legal resource.

Is it enough for a whole year of third grade?

Not on its own. It is ten practice resources and one full math unit, a steady core for language arts and math. You will still want science, social studies and the other subjects in your course of study, and possibly more math later in the year.

Do Montana home schools have to give tests?

Montana has no state assessment requirement for home-schooled students. Many parents still want a sense of progress, and the answer keys in each pack let you check work as you go. If you want a structured check, the Elementary Math Units Bundle includes a Math Test Prep & Assessment Toolkit.

I have never taught math. Will I manage?

That is what Math Made Easy is for. It is a parent guide with a workbook, written for adults supporting Grade 3 math at home. Pair it with the warm-ups and the Numbers to 1000 unit, and use the answer keys to check together rather than guessing.

Can I use it with a younger sibling too?

The licence covers your own teaching, so using it at home with your own children is fine. The content is pitched at Grade 3, though, so a first grader may find much of it too hard. The 1st Grade Practice Bundle or the Grade 1 ELA Pack would suit a younger child better.

How quickly can we start?

Right away. All ten resources are digital downloads, sent by email right after purchase and kept in your customer account under Orders. Print the first warm-up and a grammar page, and you can begin the same morning without waiting for anything to arrive in the mail.
