New Mexico Middle School Physical Science Units: Motion, Energy, Circuits
New Mexico Middle School Physical Science Units: Motion, Energy, Circuits
Yes, there is a ready set of physics units for New Mexico middle school physical science. The Middle School Physical Science Units Bundle covers motion and graphs, forces and Newton's laws, work, energy and power, pressure and buoyancy, electric circuits, and light and lenses for Grades 6–9. It handles the physics half of physical science; chemistry topics need separate material.
See the physical science unitsThe Middle School Physical Science Units Bundle ($89.99) gives New Mexico Grades 6–9 science teachers six physics units: Describing Motion & Interpreting Graphs, Forces & Interactions, Work, Energy & Power, Pressure, Buoyancy & Fluids, Electric Circuits, and Light, Refraction & Lenses. It is not matched to New Mexico's science standards and has no chemistry units, so check it against your district's course plan first.

The real problem
Physics in a New Mexico middle school science year
New Mexico's academic expectations are published by the New Mexico Public Education Department as the New Mexico Content Standards. The exact name and version of the current science standards, and how your district splits physical science across Grades 6–8, are things to confirm directly with NMPED or your district science coordinator before you plan a unit order. Two conditions shape the teaching itself. State law, through HB 130 of 2023, includes provisions for public schools on a four-day calendar. In those schools, a science period is longer but the week is shorter, so a forces lesson that runs over Thursday has to pick up again after a three-day break. Units need clear stopping points. Many New Mexico classrooms also include English learners served through NMPED's English Learner Programs or state-funded Bilingual Multicultural Education Programs (BMEP). Physics vocabulary is dense: velocity, buoyancy, refraction, resistance. Students who are still building English need the terms introduced visually and practiced before they are tested. The daily problem is the same everywhere: building a good motion-and-graphs unit or a circuits unit from scratch takes far longer than one planning period allows, and loose worksheets rarely add up to a sequence.
Why it fits
How the six units fit a New Mexico classroom
Each unit stands alone, so you can teach them in the order your district's physical science plan sets.
- Describing Motion & Interpreting Graphs gives students graph-reading practice they will use in every later unit.
- Forces & Interactions covers Newton's laws, a core topic for any middle school physical science course.
- Work, Energy & Power connects forces to energy before students meet energy in other sciences.
- Pressure, Buoyancy & Fluids gives a concrete, hands-on topic for longer four-day-week periods.
- Electric Circuits works with whatever batteries, wires and bulbs your school already stocks.
- Light, Refraction & Lenses rounds out the year with a visual topic that suits English learners.
Getting started
A suggested order for the year
Use this as a starting point and match it to your district's sequence and calendar.
- Start with motion and graphsTeach Describing Motion & Interpreting Graphs first. Graph skills come back in nearly every later unit, so time spent here early pays off in forces and energy.
- Then forces and Newton's lawsMove to Forces & Interactions. On a four-day schedule, finish each week at the end of a sub-topic so Monday's lesson starts fresh rather than mid-explanation.
- Winter: work, energy and powerTeach Work, Energy & Power after forces, since it builds directly on them. Pre-teach the key vocabulary with visuals for students in EL or BMEP programs.
- Spring: fluids and circuitsUse Pressure, Buoyancy & Fluids and Electric Circuits in spring. Plan any hands-on work around the equipment your department already has, and keep worksheet versions ready as a backup.
- End of year: light and lensesClose with Light, Refraction & Lenses. It works well as a final unit when schedules break up, and its topic gives students a clear, visual finish to the year.
What to buy
Choosing the right physics purchase
For the physics half of a Grades 6–9 physical science course, buy the Middle School Physical Science Units Bundle at $89.99; the six parts cost $149.94 separately. If your students need a slower start, the Physics Foundations Bundle ($59.99) covers measurement, motion and forces for Grades 5–9 in three units. Teachers who also teach high school physics may prefer the Physics Complete Curriculum Bundle ($129.99), with 15 units for Grades 5–12. If you want a fully structured middle school physics curriculum with inquiry practice, motion and forces, and energy, Physics Complete – Middle School starts at $149.90.
Honest limits
Limits before you buy
The bundle is not written for New Mexico. It contains no New Mexico examples and no state standards codes, and it covers physics only, not the chemistry part of physical science. Confirm the current science standards and your district's course sequence with NMPED or your district. No lab equipment, kits or supplies are included. Team use across your science department needs a short message to Teach Lessons first. If it is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does this bundle match New Mexico's science standards?
It is not aligned to, endorsed by or approved by NMPED or any New Mexico district. The topics are common middle school physics content. Check the current state science standards with NMPED and compare them with your district's physical science plan before you decide where each unit belongs.
Is this a full physical science course?
No. It covers physics topics only: motion, forces, energy, pressure and fluids, circuits, and light. Physical science courses usually include chemistry as well, such as states of matter, atoms and the periodic table. Chemistry Complete – Middle School covers those topics as a separate product, starting at $149.90.
Does it come with lab equipment?
No. The bundle includes worksheets, activities, slides and answer keys, not equipment, kits or supplies. Any hands-on work in the circuits or buoyancy units uses whatever your school already has. Check your supply closet before you plan a lab day, and keep the worksheet tasks ready if materials run short.
How does it work on a four-day school week?
Each unit stands alone, so you can plan where each week ends instead of following a fixed daily script. Longer periods on a four-day calendar can combine a reading or slide lesson with worksheet practice in one day. Pace the units to your own calendar and mark a clear stopping point before each long weekend.
Will my English learners keep up?
Physics vocabulary is challenging for any student still building English. The slides help you introduce terms such as velocity, buoyancy and refraction visually before students read. Teachers working in English Learner Programs or BMEP will usually want to add their own vocabulary supports or home-language notes on top.
How quickly can I start teaching?
Right away. The download link comes by email right after purchase and stays in your customer account under Orders, so you can download it again later from a school computer. Print the worksheets for a paper classroom, or project the slides and assign the activities in a digital classroom.
