The real problem
First grade at home in New Orleans
First grade is the year reading clicks or stalls, and parents feel it. In New Orleans there are two extra things to plan around. The first is the calendar. Ahead of Hurricane Francine in September 2024, NOLA Public Schools closed schools along with other parishes, and families with young children had days at home with little warning. A short, printed practice routine keeps letters and numbers going on those days without needing a device or a signal. The second is homeschooling. Louisiana gives families two routes. In a BESE-approved Home Study Program, a parent applies within 15 days of starting, teaches 180 days a year, and renews each year with evidence such as a packet of work samples or a statement from a certified teacher. The program's curriculum must be of a quality equal to what public schools teach at the same grade. The other route is a nonpublic school not seeking state approval, which sends an attendance report to the Louisiana Department of Education within 30 days of the school year's start. Both routes ask for structure, and the Home Study route asks for proof of work. For a six-year-old, that means short daily tasks you can date and keep.
Why it fits
What a first grader actually does with it
Each part is short and printable, so practice can happen at the kitchen table in ten or fifteen minutes.
- Phonics writing prompts build sound awareness, the skill most first grade reading depends on.
- The Grade 1 reading story, Daisy the Brave Little Duck, comes with comprehension questions.
- Grammar pages practice sentences, nouns, verbs and punctuation in small steps.
- The math pack covers numbers, operations and shapes for first grade.
- Learn to Read at Home shows parents how to support early reading, with a workbook.
- Dated pages can go into a work-sample packet for a Home Study Program renewal.
Getting started
A gentle weekly rhythm for Grade 1
Suggestions only. Six-year-olds vary a lot, so stop while it is still going well.
- Start with the parent guideRead Learn to Read at Home yourself before your child starts. It helps you decide how much help to give and what to do when a word will not come.
- Daily: one phonics or grammar pageTen minutes a day on a phonics writing prompt or a grammar page builds the habit. Alternate them so the work stays fresh across the week.
- Twice a week: math packUse the math pack on numbers, operations and shapes on two afternoons. Count real objects, like spoons or beads, alongside the worksheet when a page feels hard.
- End of week: story and writingRead Daisy the Brave Little Duck in parts and answer the questions together. Finish with a writing prompt so your child writes a sentence or two of their own.
- Closure days: keep a printed stackPrint a week of pages in advance and keep them in a folder. If schools close for weather, practice can continue without a computer or internet.
What to buy
Choosing between the Grade 1 options
The 1st Grade Practice Bundle at $34.99 is the right pick if you want both literacy and math; bought separately, the seven parts cost $50.93. If you only want reading and writing, the Grade 1 ELA Pack ($12.99) has the grammar, writing, phonics, reading story and vocabulary trainer without the math or parent guide. If your family speaks another language at home and your child is new to English, the Early ESL Starter Bundle ($27.99) is a gentler start. For several children in Grades 1–4, the Learning at Home Bundle ($79.99) has four parent guides with workbooks.
Honest limits
Limits worth knowing
This bundle was not written for Louisiana and has no Louisiana standards codes or Louisiana content, so it does not cover Grade 1 social studies, Life in the Great State of Louisiana, or the Declaration of Independence that the Home Study Program asks elementary curricula to include. It is practice, not a complete curriculum for all of first grade. Homeschool families should check current rules with BESE, the Louisiana Department of Education or a homeschool legal resource. You print the pages. If it is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does this meet Louisiana's Home Study Program requirements?
No product can promise that, and this one does not claim to. It is not aligned to Louisiana standards or approved by BESE. The Home Study Program asks for a curriculum equal in quality to public school at the same grade, 180 days, and evidence at renewal. Use the bundle as one part of your plan and confirm the current rules with BESE or a homeschool legal resource.
Can the finished pages go into a renewal packet?
Louisiana's Home Study Program accepts a packet of work samples or outlines as one form of renewal evidence. Dated worksheets from this bundle can be work samples, though what you include and whether it is enough is your decision. Check the current renewal rules before you submit.
Is it useful if my child attends a NOLA-PS school?
Yes, as extra practice. Many parents want ten minutes a day of reading and math at home, and the parent guide makes that easier. It does not follow your school's pacing, so ask the teacher which skills are coming up and choose pages to match.
Does my child need a tablet or computer?
No. You print the pages and your child works with a pencil. The math pack is described as interactive, but the practice is done on the printed pages. That makes it handy during weather closures, when power or internet at home may be unreliable and a stack of printed pages still works.
What if my first grader is still learning English?
The bundle is in English and assumes a child who already speaks some English. For a child who is just starting, the Early ESL Starter Bundle ($27.99) has vocabulary trainers, beginner grammar and a first reading story and may be a better first step. You can add the Grade 1 bundle later, once everyday English feels comfortable.
Can I use it for my second child later?
The license covers use within your own teaching, which for a family means your own children. The files stay in your account under Orders, so you can print a fresh set when a younger sibling reaches first grade. Sharing the files with other families is not covered.
