Classroom ideas for Perth

Use these suggestions to extend your planning. Local examples and activities below are teaching ideas to add, rather than a list of files included in every product.

Trace a WA mineral to market

After the supply chain lessons in the Natural Resource Extraction unit, give Years 9–12 groups one mineral mined in Western Australia. Each group maps its path from extraction to processing to export and final product, and marks one environmental impact and one economic benefit at each stage.

Run a coastal corrosion test

Alongside the Corrosion Chemistry unit, set up iron nails in tap water, salt water and oiled water, and leave them for a week. Students record changes and link the results to structures along Perth's Indian Ocean coast, such as jetties and boat fittings, where salt spray speeds up corrosion.

Analyse a resources company report

Senior Business students pick the sustainability section of a resources company's public report. Using the three-pillar model from the CSR unit, they sort each claim into ecological, economic or social, then judge which claims are backed by evidence and which are statements of intent.

Quick answers

Questions from Perth teachers

Do you guarantee curriculum alignment?

TeachLessons guarantees alignment with the Western Australian Curriculum. This guarantee covers the subjects, learning objectives and levels stated in each product description.

Is TeachLessons affiliated with the WA Department of Education or SCSA?

No. TeachLessons is an independent publisher and has no affiliation with the Western Australian Department of Education, SCSA or any Perth school. We mention these bodies only to describe the school system. Teachers choose our resources themselves and decide how they fit their own planning.

How do these resources relate to NAPLAN, OLNA and WACE?

They build the skills these assessments draw on, without being written for any of them. NAPLAN runs in March for Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. For the WACE, students must meet a minimum literacy and numeracy standard, assessed through the Online Literacy and Numeracy Assessment (OLNA) from Year 10, and ATAR students sit WACE exams.

How do I choose the right year level?

Check the year band on each card, then read the product description for the skills covered. Many units include differentiated worksheets, so one resource can serve a mixed class. In 2026, compare HASS, Mathematics, Science and Technologies content with the revised Western Australian Curriculum, which is now mandatory for those areas.

What format do the resources come in?

Every resource is an instant digital download. You can print pages for the classroom or share them digitally, and many include editable files and slides. Nothing is posted, so a unit bought on Sunday evening can be ready for Monday morning.

How can I connect these resources to Perth?

Use the resources industry and the coast as extensions. Mining and METS made up 39% of WA's gross state product in 2024–25, and WA accounts for 62% of Australia's mining and petroleum investment, which gives geography, chemistry and business lessons a clear local anchor. The classroom ideas above show three ways to start.
