What a $5 sale pays you on each platform

One $5 resource, fourteen places to sell it: the payout on each platform from its own published terms, with the formula and the catches that a single number hides.

On a single $5 resource, published terms put your payout between $2.45 (Teachers Pay Teachers Basic) and about $4.56 (your own Shopify store, before the monthly plan fee). Most marketplaces land between $3.00 and $4.25. TeachLessons pays $3.40, with no joining, yearly or listing fee and no exclusivity.

TeachLessons runs this comparison and is one of the options listed. We ranked by what reaches you per sale, so several platforms rank above us. Fees checked on October 28, 2026; platforms change their terms, so check the linked pages before you decide. TeachShare and Amped Up Learning are left out because we could not verify their seller terms; Teach Simple and TinyTap pay from subscription pools, not per sale.

How much does a $5 sale pay on each teacher platform?

One resource at $5.00, no discount, no sales tax inside the price, one item per order. "Approx." means a processing fee varies by card, country or currency. Ordered from highest to lowest payout.

Platform Formula A $5 sale pays Fixed costs not in the number
Own Shopify store 5.00 - 2.9% - $0.30 about $4.56 $29-$39 per month

Boom Learning store 5.00 x 0.85 $4.25 Paid Publisher membership; PayPal payout fee
Made By Teachers 5.00 x 0.85 - 2% PayPal fee about $4.17 Only if your plan gives 85%; whether it takes new sellers is not verified
Etsy (US seller) 5.00 - $0.20 - 6.5% - (3% + $0.25) about $4.08 Renewals; possible set-up fee
TeacherStore.io 5.00 x 0.80 $4.00 $99 per year after the trial

Gumroad (direct) 5.00 - 10% - $0.50 about $4.00 Card or PayPal processing on top
Lesson Planned 5 x 0.80 4.00 (currency not stated) None
TPT Exclusive (from 2027) 5.00 x 0.775 $3.88 $59.95 per year; exclusivity
Classmade (free plan) 5.00 x 0.85 - Stripe about $3.81 Up to 10 published resources
TeachLessons 5.00 x 0.97 x 0.70 $3.40 None
Teacha! 5.00 x 0.65 $3.25 None
Tes (new author) 5.00 x 0.60 $3.00 None stated
TPT Basic 5.00 x 0.55 - $0.30 $2.45 $29 once

Gumroad's Discover marketplace pays $3.50 (70%), and Tes rises to $3.50 at Silver and $4.00 at Gold. Etsy UK sellers keep about £4.10 on a £5 sale before VAT on Etsy fees.

How is the TeachLessons $3.40 calculated?

  1. Start with the price paid. $5.00, after any discount and without sales tax or VAT.
  2. Take off the 3% payment cost. $5.00 - $0.15 = $4.85 net revenue.
  3. Apply your 70% share. $4.85 x 0.70 = $3.395, which is $3.40. TeachLessons keeps the other 30%.

That is 67.9% of the price at every price point: $4.99 pays $3.39 and $10.00 pays $6.79. Try your own prices in the seller payout calculator, or read the 70/30 split explained.

Why doesn't the per-sale number tell the whole story?

A per-sale payout leaves out six things that can matter more:

Fixed fees

A $59.95 yearly fee or a $39 monthly plan only pays off at a certain number of sales. At low volume, a lower percentage with no fee can leave you with more.

Exclusivity

TPT Premium pays $4.00 until December 31, 2026 and TPT Exclusive pays $3.88 from January 1, 2027, but under Exclusive paid digital educational resources must be sold only on TPT. That closes every other row in the table.

Who brings buyers

Your own shop pays the most per sale, but every visitor is one you found yourself. Large marketplaces bring search traffic you don't have to create.

Work per listing

Writing titles, descriptions and previews takes time. On TeachLessons we write the product pages, FAQ and structured data for you.

Payout friction

Minimum balances, currency conversion and payout fees all reduce what reaches your account.

Price level

Fixed per-sale fees hurt cheap resources most. TPT Basic's $0.30 is 6% of a $5 sale but 1.5% of a $20 one.

Which platform pays the most for teaching resources?

On published terms alone, your own store and the low-commission storefronts pay the most per sale. Among teacher marketplaces with search traffic, Boom Learning (for Boom Cards), Made By Teachers (on its 85% plan), TeacherStore.io and TPT Exclusive sit near the top, each with conditions in the right-hand column. TeachLessons at $3.40 is in the lower half on a pure per-sale ranking, ahead of Teacha!, a new Tes author and TPT Basic.

Our case rests on no fees, no exclusivity and the product pages we write for you, not on the highest share. TeachLessons launched in October 2026 and has a smaller audience than the long-established marketplaces.

How should I use this table when choosing where to sell?

  1. Check the exclusivity column first. If you want to sell in more than one place, rule out anything exclusive.
  2. Add the fixed costs to your realistic first-year sales, not your hoped-for ones.
  3. Compare at your own prices: a $3 resource and a $20 bundle rank platforms differently.
  4. Open the linked terms and confirm the numbers on the day you decide.

If TeachLessons fits as one of your channels, the application form takes about five minutes.

Key takeaway: A $5 sale pays from $2.45 to about $4.56 depending on where you sell. Pick by the full picture: fixed fees, exclusivity, audience and work per listing, then use the per-sale number to compare what is left.

Questions sellers ask

What does TeachLessons pay on a $5 sale?

$3.40. The formula is price x 0.97 x 0.70, so you receive 67.9% of the price, with no membership, listing or per-resource fees.

What does TPT Basic pay on a $5 sale?

$2.45, from TPT's published formula: $5.00 x 0.55 minus a $0.30 transaction fee per resource. Basic sellers also pay a one-time $29 fee.

Which teacher marketplace pays the highest percentage?

Among teacher marketplaces we verified, Made By Teachers advertises up to 85% depending on plan, and Boom Learning keeps a 15% fee on Boom Store sales. Storefronts such as Payhip Pro charge no commission but have monthly fees, and you find your own buyers.

Why are some payouts marked approximate?

Card processing fees vary by card type, country and currency, and some platforms add them on top of their own fee. The figures use the standard US card rate where a platform publishes one.

Does a higher payout per sale mean I earn more?

Not always. Yearly fees, exclusivity and how many buyers a platform brings can matter more than a few cents per sale.

Can I sell on TeachLessons and another platform at the same time?

Yes. TeachLessons has no exclusivity, so you can combine it with any platform that doesn't require exclusivity for that resource.
