Personal Finance Lessons for Alabama's Career Preparedness Course

Teaching the financial literacy part of Alabama's Career Preparedness course? The Personal Finance Starter Bundle ($59.99) gives you six ready lessons and units for the opening weeks: a course launch, money values, SMART goals, a money mindset quiz, handling money and avoiding debt, and percentages and interest. It is a starter set for that semester, not the whole course, and it was not built around the state's financial literacy exam.

Quick answer

For an Alabama teacher starting the personal finance semester of Career Preparedness, the Personal Finance Starter Bundle ($59.99) handles the first stretch: a Day 1 course overview with slides, workbook and notes, a values lesson, SMART financial goals, a money mindset quiz, a unit on handling money and debt prevention, and a percentages and interest unit. You still need material for the rest of the semester and for exam review.

The real problem

The finance half of a required course

Alabama has required one unit of Career Preparedness for graduation since the Class of 2013. It is a one-year course, and one semester of it is personal finance. The same course also carries career and academic planning and computer applications, and it includes a financial literacy exam. That mix creates a real squeeze. The teacher is often covering résumé work and software skills in the same year, so finance lessons compete for planning time. Students also arrive with very different money experience: some already earn a paycheck, others have never looked at one closely. Abstract lectures on interest rarely stick with teenagers, while a lesson that starts with what they care about usually gets a conversation going. The state publishes its CTE expectations in the Alabama Career and Technical Education Courses of Study, so whatever you use has to be checked against that document, unit by unit. What most teachers need first is a strong opening: lessons that get students talking honestly about money in week one, set goals they can measure, and reach debt and interest before the harder material. That opening is what this bundle is for.

Why it fits

How the six parts fit the finance semester

Each part has a clear place in the first weeks of the personal finance semester.

  • The Day 1 lesson comes with slides, a workbook and notes, so the semester opens without extra prep.
  • Wheel of Life connects spending choices to what students actually value before any numbers appear.
  • SMART Financial Goals turns vague money wishes into concrete plans students can check later.
  • The Money Mindset Quiz sorts students into saver, spender, avoider or investor and starts discussion.
  • Handling Money and Debt Prevention gives debt a full unit instead of a single worksheet.
  • Percentages and Interest practices discounts, tax and simple interest, the math behind many money decisions.

Getting started

A suggested opening for the finance semester

Timing is a suggestion. Stretch or shorten each step around your exam date and the rest of the course.

  1. Launch the courseTeach the Financial Literacy Day 1 lesson with its slides, workbook and notes. Set ground rules for talking about money and explain how the finance semester fits into Career Preparedness.
  2. Values before numbersUse the Wheel of Life lesson so students connect money to what matters to them. Follow with the Money Mindset Quiz and let students compare their results in small groups.
  3. Set goals students can measureRun the SMART Financial Goals lesson and have each student write one short-term and one longer-term goal. Collect them and return them near the end of the semester.
  4. Debt and everyday moneyTeach Financial Literacy – Handling Money and Debt Prevention as a full unit. This is a natural point to link money decisions with the career planning work from the same course.
  5. Close with the mathFinish with Percentages and Interest: discounts, sales tax and simple interest. Then move to your own material for the remaining topics and for review before the financial literacy exam.

What to buy

Starter bundle or something bigger

Start with the Personal Finance Starter Bundle at $59.99 (the six parts cost $78.94 separately) if you want a solid opening for the finance semester. If you teach the full year of Career Preparedness, the Career Readiness Curriculum Bundle ($99.99, parts $199.92) adds cover letters, résumés, interviews, professional email, time management and AI at work; it also contains the same debt unit. Students who struggle with the math may need the Everyday & Financial Math Bundle ($49.99) alongside. The Accounting & Economics Fundamentals Bundle ($109.99) fits a business elective better than this required course.

Honest limits

What you still have to supply

Six lessons and units will not fill a semester, so plan your own material for the remaining finance topics. The bundle is not written for Alabama, carries no codes from the Alabama Career and Technical Education Courses of Study and is not designed as preparation for the state's financial literacy exam. Check each lesson against the course of study yourself. Calculators and devices are yours to provide. A department sharing the files should send Teach Lessons a short message first. If it is not a fit, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value, not cash.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is this approved for Alabama's Career Preparedness requirement?

No. It is not approved, endorsed or aligned under the Alabama Career and Technical Education Courses of Study, and it does not fulfill any graduation requirement on its own. It is a set of lessons a teacher can use inside the course. Check the content against the state's course of study and your district's expectations before you build it into your plan.

Will it prepare students for the financial literacy exam?

Not directly. The bundle was not written around that exam and contains no practice test. It does build basics that many money questions rest on, such as goals, debt and interest. Use your district's review materials for the exam itself and treat these lessons as the foundation earlier in the semester.

How much of the semester does it fill?

An opening stretch, not the whole semester. You get six parts: a launch lesson, three shorter pieces on values, goals and money mindset, and two units on debt prevention and on percentages and interest. How long that takes depends on your schedule and class, so plan the remaining weeks with your own or additional material.

What if my students' math is weak?

The Percentages and Interest unit works through discounts, tax and simple interest step by step, which is where weak math usually shows. If many students need more, the Everyday & Financial Math Bundle ($49.99) adds business maths with the rule of three and a ratio, proportion and percentage unit. It also covers percentages and interest, so expect some overlap.

Should I buy this and the Career Readiness bundle?

Only if you teach both halves of Career Preparedness and want the extra career units. Both bundles include Financial Literacy – Handling Money and Debt Prevention, so buying both means owning that unit twice. If you teach just the finance semester, the starter bundle is enough to begin with.

Can our CTE department share one copy?

The licence is for your own teaching. Use across a team or school is possible after a short message to Teach Lessons, so write before you pass the files to colleagues in your department. Files arrive right after purchase by email and in your customer account under Orders.
