The real problem
Fifth grade in Austin, with middle school in view
Fifth grade is the last year before middle school, and in Austin ISD the picture for middle school is shifting. On July 30, 2026, trustees voted to close Paredes Middle School and reassign its students to Bailey or Mendez middle schools, a change that takes effect once the Texas Education Agency approves it. Austin ISD also runs Burnet, Dobie and Webb middle schools itself in 2026–27 after the agency denied a planned management partnership on May 28, 2026; turnaround supports such as interventionists and coaches continue. None of that changes what your child needs this year, but it is a good reason to make sure reading, writing and arithmetic are steady before the move, wherever it leads. Homeschooling families in Austin work under Texas rules, which treat a homeschool as a private school. No state filing is described, and if a public school asks, a letter stating that your child is being legally taught at home is enough. You use a written curriculum, online programs included, teach in a bona fide manner, and cover reading, spelling, grammar, mathematics and good citizenship. For questions about testing and record keeping, ask the state or a homeschool legal resource directly.
Why it fits
Where the eight parts help before sixth grade
The bundle mixes Grade 5 literacy practice with math that looks ahead to middle school.
- Grade 5 Phonics & Morphology builds word study for the longer texts of sixth grade.
- Grade 5 Writing Prompts give structured practice for writers who are gaining confidence.
- Two reading stories with questions give practice in answering from the text, not from memory.
- Interactive Math Workshop keeps multiplication, division and measurement in regular practice.
- Chance & Events introduces probability, a topic many students first meet in middle school.
- The Growing Math kit spans grades 5–9, so it stays useful after the move to sixth grade.
Getting started
A school-year plan for home practice
This outline is a suggestion. Trim it on heavy homework weeks and expand it over breaks.
- Start with grammar and readingIn the first weeks after the Aug. 18 start, use the Grade 5 grammar pages and one reading story twice a week. It eases your child back into regular practice without a long session.
- Make math a steady habitAdd the Interactive Math Workshop on alternate days. Short, regular practice on multiplying, dividing and measuring keeps those skills firm before fractions and equations arrive in middle school.
- Write once a weekPick one writing prompt each weekend. Ask your child to plan, draft and fix one paragraph, then read it aloud. A paragraph done well is worth more than three rushed pages.
- Use probability as a change of paceBring out Chance & Events in winter, when routines slip. Experiments with chance feel more like a game, yet they lead into data and reasoning used later.
- Look ahead in springIn the last months of fifth grade, move into the Growing Math kit. Because it runs through grade 9, you can keep using it once your child starts middle school.
What to buy
Picking the right fifth grade download
Most Austin families should start with the 5th Grade Practice Bundle at $42.99; the eight parts cost $62.92 if bought separately. If you only want reading and writing, the Grade 5 ELA Pack costs $13.99. The Middle School Math Starter Bundle ($54.99) adds fractions, compass constructions and algebraic expressions, but it shares the Growing Math kit with this bundle, so check the overlap. A child who is already working ahead may be ready for the 6th Grade Practice Bundle at $44.99.
Honest limits
Read this before you buy
The bundle is not written for Texas or Austin ISD and contains no Texas content or TEKS codes. It is practice material plus a probability unit and a math kit, not a complete fifth grade curriculum, and it does not include science or social studies. Homeschool families decide for themselves whether it fits their written curriculum; that legal question is yours to check. You print the pages and supply the dice or rulers any activity may call for. Using it with several families needs a message to Teach Lessons first. Exchanges for store credit of equal value are possible within 7 days; there is no cash refund.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Can this be our Texas homeschool curriculum?
On its own, no, and it is not approved by Texas or aligned to the TEKS. Texas expects a written curriculum covering reading, spelling, grammar, mathematics and good citizenship. This bundle gives Grade 5 practice in parts of reading, grammar and math. Good citizenship and the rest are up to you. Confirm current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource.
My child's middle school may change. Should we still use this?
Yes, because the skills move with your child. Whether a student ends up at Bailey, Mendez or another campus depends on the district and the Texas Education Agency, but grammar, reading, writing and arithmetic go along either way. The Growing Math kit also runs into the middle school grades.
How much time does it take each week?
A reasonable start is three or four sessions of about twenty minutes. That leaves room for school homework and activities. You can scale up over winter break or the summer before sixth grade. These times are suggestions, not part of the product, and your child's energy after school should set the pace.
Is it a printed workbook?
No, it is a digital download that you print. The link arrives by email right after purchase and stays in your customer account under Orders, so you can reprint a page whenever your child needs another try. Printing one week of pages at a time keeps the stack manageable.
What if my child already finished these skills?
Then look at the 6th Grade Practice Bundle, which adds fractions and an equations unit, or the Middle School Math Starter Bundle. Within 7 days you can also exchange this bundle for store credit of equal value if it turns out to be too easy.
Can we share it with a cousin in another school?
The licence covers your own teaching, so use within your household is fine. Sharing with another family, a co-op or a tutoring group needs a short message to Teach Lessons first. Please do not post the files online or forward them to anyone outside your household.
