The real problem

Fifth grade in Miami-Dade, and the step that follows

Miami-Dade County Public Schools started the 2026–27 year on Thursday, August 13, 2026. For a fifth grader, this is the last year of elementary school, and next fall brings middle school, more teachers and more independent work. In Florida, sixth graders usually take M/J World History, and the phone rules stay much the same: under the district's Heads Up, Phones Down policy, elementary and middle school students may not use or display personal devices during the school day. Parents often notice in fifth grade that reading assignments grow longer, writing has to be organized into real paragraphs and math adds multi-step problems. Short practice at home helps a child arrive in sixth grade confident. Families who teach at home under Florida's home education program, s. 1002.41, F.S., have their own checklist. You file a notice of intent with the county school superintendent within 30 days of beginning, which is not refiled each year. You keep a portfolio, a log of educational activities listing reading materials plus samples of your child's work, for two years; the superintendent may inspect it on 15 days' written notice. Each year you file an evaluation, chosen from five options such as a certified teacher's portfolio review or a nationally normed test. This is a summary; check current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource.

Why it fits

Why this set suits a fifth grader at home

Each part produces work you can see, which matters both for a parent checking progress and for a Florida portfolio.

  • Grade 5 Phonics & Morphology teaches word parts, which helps with longer middle school vocabulary.
  • Two reading stories with questions give dated work samples for a Florida home education portfolio.
  • Grade 5 Writing Prompts build structured paragraphs, the writing skill middle school expects early.
  • The Interactive Math Workshop practices multiplying, dividing and measuring at a fifth grade level.
  • Chance & Events introduces probability with dice experiments, a hands-on change from worksheets.
  • Growing Math covers Grades 5 to 9, so the same kit carries on into sixth grade.

Getting started

Fifth grade at home, term by term

A suggested outline for the rest of the 2026–27 year; homeschool families can expand each part into daily lessons.

  1. Fall: grammar and word partsAlternate the Grade 5 English Grammar pages with phonics and morphology. Keep one finished page a week in a folder, labeled with the date and the reading material used.
  2. Before winter break: first storyRead The Secret Garden Door and work through its questions. Ask your child to write a short paragraph about the ending using a writing prompt.
  3. Winter: multiply, divide, measureSpend several weeks on the Interactive Math Workshop. Measuring real objects at home turns a page of problems into something a fifth grader can check.
  4. Spring: probability with Chance & EventsUse the dice experiments for a few short sessions. Record results in a table, a skill that comes back often in middle school math and science.
  5. Summer: preview sixth gradeRead Mia and the Magic Kite, then try a few early tasks from the Growing Math kit. Keep it light; the aim is confidence for the first weeks of middle school.

What to buy

Grade 5 bundle or one of the alternatives

For most Miami fifth graders, the 5th Grade Practice Bundle at $42.99 is the right choice, since its eight parts cost $62.92 separately. If you only want literacy, the Grade 5 ELA Pack ($13.99, parts $19.95) has the grammar, writing, phonics and both stories. The Middle School Math Starter Bundle ($54.99, parts $77.96) adds fractions, compass constructions and algebraic expressions, but it also contains the Growing Math kit you would already own. A child working ahead can move to the 6th Grade Practice Bundle ($44.99, parts $64.94) with Fractions Complete and Terms and Equations.

Honest limits

Before you rely on it

This bundle is not written for Florida. It has no B.E.S.T. benchmark codes, no Florida history and no link to Miami-Dade schools, and it is not approved by the state. Check it against the B.E.S.T. standards and the home education rules yourself. It is practice plus two units, not a full year, and has no science or U.S. history. Families using a scholarship or private school umbrella should check that program's rules and vendor list before buying. You supply printing and dice. Sharing with a co-op needs a message to Teach Lessons first. If it does not fit, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value, not cash.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does this meet Florida's home education requirements?

The bundle is not aligned to Florida's B.E.S.T. standards and is not approved by the state or Miami-Dade County Public Schools. Florida's home education law focuses on a notice of intent, a portfolio and an annual evaluation. The worksheets can become portfolio samples, but whether your overall program is complete is a question for the state or a homeschool legal resource.

Will this help my child get ready for middle school?

It practices the skills sixth grade builds on: longer reading, structured paragraphs, word parts, multi-step math and early probability. The Growing Math teaching kit runs from Grade 5 to Grade 9, so it continues into the next year. It does not include social studies or science preview.

Can I use it alongside my child's Miami-Dade classes?

Yes, as extra practice at home. It is not tied to the district's curriculum, so if your child's teacher sends specific homework, do that first. A page or two a few times a week is a sensible starting point for most fifth graders. Save weekends for the reading stories.

Can I pay with a scholarship or ESA account?

Teach Lessons does not claim to be an approved vendor of any ESA or scholarship program. Check your program's rules and vendor list before buying. The product page lists all eight parts if your program asks for details. Buying first and asking later can leave the cost with you.

Do we need a computer for any of it?

Only for the download. The worksheets, stories and units can be printed and used on paper, which also makes it easy to keep samples for a portfolio. No software or account is included or needed. Dice for the probability unit come from your own game cupboard.

What if fifth grade is the wrong level?

Compare the parts with your child's current work before ordering. If the bundle is too easy or too hard, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value and choose another grade. It is credit, not a cash refund. The 4th and 6th Grade bundles are the nearest options.
