The real problem

Career readiness in Hawaii schools as of 2026–27

Hawaii's diploma asks for two credits in World Language, Fine Arts, CTE or JROTC. For CTE, that means completing one career pathway program of study sequence. The courses in those sequences follow HIDOE's Industry Pathway and Program Standards, and each pathway brings its own technical content. What every pathway assumes, and few course guides spell out lesson by lesson, is the general layer underneath: how to write a résumé, how to send a professional email, how to talk to a customer who is upset, how to show up on time and work in a team. Those lessons often fall to an advisory teacher, a work-based learning coordinator or a CTE teacher squeezing them into a lab course. Money is the second pressure. HIDOE lists financial literacy program standards and marks them as required starting with the Class of 2030, which means students who started ninth grade in fall 2026. Schools are working out where that instruction will live. Add the staffing picture: HIDOE fills open positions with emergency hires and out-of-state teachers. A teacher new to Hawaii or new to teaching career skills has little time to build eight units from scratch.

Why it fits

What the eight units give a Hawaii classroom

The bundle covers the general workplace skills that sit beside any pathway. Here is how each part can be used.

  • The application training unit walks students through cover letter, résumé and interview for a first job.
  • Business letter and professional email practice fits a work-based learning placement before students contact employers.
  • Customer conversations and conflicts suits pathways where students deal with the public, such as hospitality or retail.
  • Handling money and debt prevention gives an early start on the financial literacy standards before Class of 2030.
  • The digitalization and AI unit lets students discuss how AI is changing the jobs their pathway leads to.
  • Presenting and time management units work in advisory periods, one lesson at a time.

Getting started

One way to spread the units over a year

Suggested pacing for an advisory or a CTE class meeting once or twice a week. Adjust it to your pathway calendar.

  1. Fall: time and teamworkStart with time management and conflict and team management. These help students settle into a pathway course where group projects and lab schedules matter from the first weeks.
  2. Before placements: email and callsTeach professional email and customer conversations before students contact a work-based learning site or an internship host. First contact then sounds professional, and students know how to handle a difficult call.
  3. Winter: applicationsRun the application training unit while summer jobs and programs are posting openings. Students leave with a draft cover letter and résumé they can revise.
  4. Spring: moneyUse handling money and debt prevention near the time students start earning. Note which Hawaii financial literacy standards your school wants covered and add lessons where gaps remain.
  5. End of year: AI and presentingClose with the AI at work unit and a short presentation in which each student explains how one career in their pathway is changing. It ties the presenting unit to real careers and gives you a final piece of work to assess.

What to buy

Bundle, finance set or single unit

Start with the Career Readiness Curriculum Bundle at $99.99; the eight units listed separately total $199.92. If your school's main concern is the Class of 2030 financial literacy requirement, the Personal Finance Starter Bundle ($59.99, parts $78.94) is more focused: a course launch lesson, money values, SMART goals, a money mindset quiz, debt prevention and percentages and interest. Business and accounting pathway teachers may want the Accounting & Economics Fundamentals Bundle ($109.99, parts $224.91). If you only need the AI discussion, Digitalisation and AI in the World of Work is sold alone for $24.99.

Honest limits

Limits worth knowing before you buy

The units are general career readiness material. They were not written for Hawaii, do not follow HIDOE Industry Pathway and Program Standards, and do not count as a program of study course on their own. Several titles come from vocational training contexts and use words like apprentices or training, so you may adjust wording for high school students. Check the content against your pathway and the financial literacy standards your school uses. Local employer contacts and placements are yours to arrange. Team use needs a short message to Teach Lessons first. Within 7 days you can exchange it for store credit of equal value; there are no cash refunds.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does this bundle meet Hawaii's CTE or financial literacy requirement?

No. It is not aligned with or approved for HIDOE Industry Pathway and Program Standards or the financial literacy program standards required starting with the Class of 2030. It does not count as a program of study course. Use it inside a course your school already offers, and check which standards your school needs covered.

Which grades is it for?

The bundle is listed for Grades 9–12. Application training and money lessons fit juniors and seniors well, since they are closest to first jobs and placements. Time management and teamwork work with ninth graders who are starting a pathway and need habits for group projects and lab schedules from the beginning.

Can I use single units in an advisory period?

Yes. Each of the eight units is a separate resource, and all parts are also sold on their own. You can teach one unit in a short block or spread its lessons over several weeks of advisory time. Many advisory teachers pick two or three units per semester rather than running all eight in order.

I am new to teaching in Hawaii. Is this usable on day one?

The units come ready to teach with worksheets, activities, slides and answer keys, so you can follow them without building your own materials first. You still need to learn your school's pathway expectations, connect the lessons to local employers and check which standards your school wants covered in your course.

Is any software or job platform included?

No. You get worksheets, activities, slides and answer keys as digital downloads, and nothing else. Students can draft résumés and emails on paper or on whatever devices your school already provides. No job platform, software or student accounts are part of the purchase, so there is nothing extra to set up.

Can the whole CTE department use one purchase?

The licence covers your own teaching. Department or school use is possible after a short message to Teach Lessons. Please send it before you share the files with colleagues, and do not post them publicly or on an open shared drive. Resale and redistribution are not allowed under any licence.
