The real problem
What makes planning high school English in Iowa tricky
Iowa Code ties the state's schools to the Iowa core, a set of core content standards for reading, mathematics and science from kindergarten through Grade 12. The law names the frame, but the day-to-day English course is still built in your district: which texts each grade reads, when the research paper happens, how much argument writing sits in Grade 10 versus Grade 11. That leaves a lot of the actual lesson writing to the individual teacher. The hard part is the scaffolding around each text: a shared vocabulary for talking about a text, a worksheet that walks a weaker reader through a scene, a model paragraph, an answer key you can trust at 10 p.m. Iowa families teaching high school at home have a similar task. Under the Annual Assessment option, Form A asks for textbooks or a course outline, and reading and language arts are among the required subjects. Before you buy anything, confirm the current name and version of the Iowa ELA standards with the Iowa Department of Education or your district curriculum office.
Why it fits
How the nine units fit an Iowa English course
Each unit stands alone, so you can teach them in order or pull one into an existing course. Here is where they usually land.
- Analysis Vocabulary and Operators gives a Grade 9 class shared terms before any longer text.
- Characterisation and Analysing Fiction works with whatever short stories or novels your department already assigns.
- Macbeth gives you a complete drama unit for the Shakespeare slot many Iowa courses keep.
- Orwell's 1984 and The American Dream suit Grade 11 or 12 classes reading longer works.
- Analysing Political Speeches and Analysing Cartoons pair well with the required U.S. government half unit.
- Writing a Comment and Argumentative Essay gives you a planned essay sequence with models and answer keys.
Getting started
A semester outline using the bundle
This is one suggested order for an Iowa Grade 10 or 11 class. Shift units to match your district's course map.
- Weeks 1–2: the language of analysisOpen with Analysis Vocabulary and Operators so students know what explain, analyze and evaluate ask of them. Every later unit uses these terms, which saves reteaching.
- Fiction and characterizationTeach Characterisation and Analysing Fiction with a story your class already owns. Students practice quoting, explaining and linking a detail to a character trait before they meet a full drama.
- MacbethMove to the Macbeth unit for close reading of a play. Use the differentiated worksheets so students who struggle with the language still reach the analysis questions.
- Speeches, cartoons and argumentCombine Analysing Political Speeches and Analysing Cartoons, then finish with the argumentative essay unit. Students now write about rhetoric they have already taken apart in class.
- Longer text and reviewEnd with 1984 or The American Dream, depending on your reading list. The listening and viewing pack works well for review days or a substitute lesson.
What to buy
Which package to buy
Buy the High School ELA Text Analysis & Writing Bundle at $109.99 if you need targeted units for analysis and essay writing. The same nine units cost $224.91 bought separately. If you are building a whole English course from scratch, ELA Complete – High School at $149.90 is the broader choice, with literary analysis across stories, novels, drama, poetry and speeches plus writing from planning to editing. Teaching Grades 7 and 8 as well? ELA Complete – Middle School costs $149.90, and the code TEACHMORE15 takes 15% off two Complete packages bought together. Teach-Life-Balance ($89.90) is a time-saving course, not English content.
Honest limits
Limits worth knowing before you order
This bundle is not written for Iowa. It has no Iowa-specific texts or state standards codes and is not approved or endorsed by the Iowa Department of Education or any district. Check each unit against your own course requirements. You also supply the full novels and plays your students read. The license covers your own teaching; for use by a whole department, send Teach Lessons a short message first. If the bundle turns out not to fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value. It is not a cash refund.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does this bundle match the Iowa core or Iowa's ELA standards?
No claim of that kind is made. The units were written for high school English in general and are not aligned with, approved by or endorsed under Iowa's standards. Iowa Code refers to the Iowa core with standards in reading, so check each unit against your district's English course map and the current state ELA standards. Your curriculum office can tell you which version applies this year.
How many English credits does an Iowa student need?
This page does not give a number, because English credit requirements are set through state rules and district policy and you should take them from the source. The state graduation items we can confirm are three years of social studies, one unit of U.S. history and a half unit of U.S. government. Ask your school counselor or district for the English requirement that applies to your students.
Can I use it for an Iowa homeschool high schooler?
Yes, the units work at a kitchen table as well as in a classroom. Under the Annual Assessment option, Form A lists textbooks or a course outline, and the unit titles can help you write that outline. Families under Independent Private Instruction have no routine filing. Check the current law with the Iowa Department of Education or a homeschool legal resource before relying on any summary.
Can I pay with an Iowa Students First ESA?
Teach Lessons does not claim to be an approved vendor for the Students First ESA. Published guidance says curriculum fees and textbooks are eligible when billed by the school, and vendor-billed textbooks need verification. Check your program's current rules and vendor list before you buy.
Do I need copies of Macbeth and 1984?
Yes. The units give you worksheets, activities, slides and answer keys built around these works, but they do not replace the full texts. Use the editions your school or library already has, and the same goes for any story you pair with the characterization unit.
Can my whole English department share one purchase?
The standard license covers your own teaching only. If several teachers in your building want to use the units, send Teach Lessons a short message before buying and say how many people would teach with them. Redistribution and posting the files publicly are not allowed.
