The real problem
What Minnesota asks of a homeschooling parent
Minnesota's homeschool law asks more of families than many states do, and reading and writing sit at the center of it. Once a child turns 7, the family files a report with the superintendent of the resident district by October 1 each year, or within 15 days of withdrawing from public school. That report names the annual test the child will take. Under Minn. Stat. 120A.22, required subjects include basic communication skills such as reading and writing, along with literature and fine arts, math and science, social studies, and health and physical education. Each year the child takes a nationally norm-referenced standardized achievement test agreed with the superintendent. A score at or below the 30th percentile, or one grade level below expected, calls for an additional evaluation for learning problems. Families also keep documentation that the required subjects were taught and tests given, such as schedules and materials, and a county attorney may ask to see it. So a Minnesota parent needs two things from a literacy program: steady skill practice that shows up on a test, and a paper trail that proves it happened. This page summarizes the law only briefly; confirm the current rules with the Minnesota Department of Education or a homeschool legal resource.
Why it fits
How the packs fit a Minnesota home program
Each grade has its own grammar, writing and word study pack, so siblings can work on the same skill at different levels.
- Grammar packs run from Grade 1 sentences and nouns to Grade 6 sentence types and parts of speech.
- Writing prompts with story starters and word banks give each child a daily piece of dated writing.
- Phonics and word study grow from phonological awareness in Grade 1 to roots and prefixes in Grade 6.
- Six reading comprehension stories with questions add reading practice you can keep in your records.
- Siblings two or three grades apart can share a lesson topic while each works in their own pack.
- Finished worksheets file neatly into the documentation Minnesota families keep for each school year.
Getting started
A simple weekly rhythm
This rhythm is one suggestion for a family with children in different grades. Adjust it to your days and your children.
- Find each child's starting packGive each child a few pages from their grade's grammar and phonics packs. If a page is too easy or too hard, move one grade up or down, since all six grades are in the same download.
- Monday and Wednesday: grammar and wordsWork through the grammar pack and the phonics or word study pack in short sessions. Younger children can do a page aloud with you while older siblings work on their own.
- Tuesday and Thursday: write somethingUse one writing prompt per session. Date each piece and keep it, so you build a writing record over the year without making a separate portfolio.
- Friday: read a story togetherUse one of the six reading comprehension stories with its questions, then read from a real book of your choice to cover literature, which the packs do not.
- Keep records with test day in mindFile finished pages by month. When your annual standardized test comes up, you have a clear record of what was practiced and where a child may need more support.
What to buy
One grade or all six?
With two or more children, the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum ($49.99, parts $95.76) gives the most for the money, since every grade is included. With one child, a grade pack may be enough: the Grade 1 ELA Pack costs $12.99 (parts $17.95), and the Grade 3 and Grade 5 ELA Packs cost $13.99 each (parts $19.95), each adding a vocabulary trainer or a second reading story. If your child is still learning English, the ESL Newcomer Curriculum Bundle ($79.99, parts $159.91) starts with everyday English, pronouns, verb tenses and vocabulary before grade-level work.
Honest limits
What it does not cover
These packs are practice for grammar, writing, phonics and reading comprehension. They are not a literature curriculum, include no fine arts, and do not prepare for any particular standardized test. Nothing is written for Minnesota, and the packs are not approved under Minn. Stat. 120A.22 or by any district. You choose the books, the test, and how you document your year, and you should check current homeschool rules yourself. A co-op that wants to share the packs should message Teach Lessons first. If they do not suit your family, exchange them within 7 days for store credit of equal value; there is no cash refund.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does this curriculum meet Minnesota's homeschool requirements?
No product can promise that, and this one is not endorsed or approved by the state or any district. Minnesota lists reading and writing among the required subjects, and the packs give you practice in both. Literature and fine arts are separate required subjects that you cover with other materials. Check current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource.
Will it prepare my child for the annual test?
It builds skills that reading and writing sections of tests often look at, such as grammar, word study and comprehension. It is not a test prep product and is not built around any specific norm-referenced exam. Use the finished pages to spot weak areas early, well before test time.
I have a first grader and a fifth grader. Is this enough for both?
Yes, for the skills side. Both grades have their own grammar, writing prompt and phonics or word study packs, and there are reading stories for Grade 1 and Grade 5. Add read-aloud books and independent reading so both children also get the literature Minnesota lists as a subject.
How do the packs help with record keeping?
Each finished worksheet or writing prompt is a dated sample of work. Minnesota families keep documentation that required subjects were taught, such as schedules and materials, and a county attorney may ask for it. Filing the pages by month gives you an easy record. What exactly to keep is your decision under the law.
Can I pay with a scholarship or education account?
Teach Lessons does not claim to be an approved vendor for any education savings account or scholarship program. If you have access to one, check its rules and vendor list before you buy, because each program decides what it pays for and which sellers it accepts. Keep your receipt from the order confirmation email.
Can our homeschool co-op use one copy?
The license covers your own teaching, which for a homeschool means your family. If a co-op or learning group wants to use the packs with several families, write to Teach Lessons before buying and ask about that use. Copying the files for other families is not allowed.
