The real problem
What New Mexico asks of a home school, and what it leaves to you
New Mexico's home school rules sit in Section 22-1-2.1 NMSA 1978. Families notify the New Mexico Public Education Department within 30 days after establishing the home school, then by August 1 of each later year, either through the NMPED Home School System online or on a paper Notification of a Home School form. The instructor needs at least a high school diploma or its equivalent, and immunization records or a waiver are required. The required subjects are reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies and science. Records of instructional hours, materials and student work are encouraged but not legally required. That leaves the hard part with the parent: what to actually teach in reading and language arts each day. With children in different grades, the problem multiplies. A first grader needs phonics and simple sentences, while a fifth grader needs paragraph structure and word roots. Buying a separate program for each child gets expensive, and switching between them eats the morning. Many families want one set of materials that follows the same pattern across grades, so every child sits down to grammar, writing or word study at the same time, each at the right level.
Why it fits
How it works for a New Mexico home school
Every grade gets the same four kinds of practice, so a multi-age table can run on one routine.
- Grammar packs run from Grade 1 sentences and nouns to Grade 6 sentence types and parts of speech.
- Writing prompts for each grade move from sentence starters to structured practice with editing tools.
- Phonics and word study progress from phonological awareness in Grade 1 to roots and prefixes in Grade 6.
- Six reading comprehension stories, such as The Lighthouse Mystery, add reading practice with questions.
- Siblings in Grades 2 and 5 can do grammar at the same time from their own packs.
- Finished pages make an easy record of materials and student work if you choose to keep one.
Getting started
A simple weekly routine
Here is one way to run the packs with several children. Change the days to suit your family.
- Monday: grammar for everyoneEach child works from their own grade's grammar pack. Start the youngest first with a short explanation, then check in on the older ones while the little one practices.
- Tuesday: phonics and word studyYounger children work on sounds and word patterns; older ones study prefixes, roots and morphology. Keep each session short and stop before attention fades, then switch to reading aloud together.
- Wednesday: writing promptsGive each child one prompt from their grade level. Ask for a draft today and save editing for later in the week, so writing does not feel like a test.
- Thursday: reading storiesWork through a reading comprehension story with its questions. If a grade has no story of its own, borrow the closest one or use a library book.
- Friday: revise and fileFinish the week's writing, look over the work together, and file finished pages in a folder for each child if you are keeping records of materials and student work.
What to buy
One grade or all six
With children in two or more grades, buy the Grades 1–6 Literacy Skills Curriculum at $49.99 instead of $95.76 for the parts. For a single child, a grade pack can be enough: the Grade 1 ELA Pack ($12.99, parts $17.95) adds a vocabulary trainer, and the Grade 3 and Grade 5 ELA Packs cost $13.99 each, with parts at $19.95. If a child is new to English, the ESL Newcomer Curriculum Bundle ($79.99, parts $159.91) is the better starting point, with everyday English, grammar and vocabulary for Grades 2–6.
Honest limits
What this does not do
This covers reading and language arts practice only. Mathematics, social studies and science, the other required New Mexico homeschool subjects, need other materials. It is not written for New Mexico and has no state standards codes. The reading stories do not cover every grade evenly, and the packs are practice, not a full scripted reading program. Check current rules with NMPED or a homeschool legal resource. A co-op group needs a short message to Teach Lessons first. If it is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Is this approved for New Mexico homeschooling?
No. It is not approved, endorsed or reviewed by NMPED. New Mexico's required homeschool subjects include reading and language arts, and this bundle gives practice in both, but it does not fulfill any requirement by itself. Confirm the current rules with NMPED or a homeschool legal resource; this page is not legal advice.
Does it follow New Mexico's ELA standards?
It is not aligned to them. New Mexico's ELA standards combine the Common Core State Standards with New Mexico state-specific standards focused on cultural responsiveness. If you want to compare, check the packs against those documents yourself. The bundle has no New Mexico or culturally specific content.
Can I use it with a child who is learning English?
The packs are written for children reading in English at grade level, so a child new to English will likely find them hard at first. The ESL Newcomer Curriculum Bundle is designed for that stage, with everyday English, simple grammar and vocabulary. It can come first, with the literacy packs added once your child reads with more confidence.
Do I have to keep records of what we used?
According to NMPED, records of instructional hours, materials and student work are encouraged but not legally required. Immunization records or a waiver are required. Keeping finished pages in a folder per child is an easy way to keep a record if you want one, and it also shows you progress over the year.
Do I need special training to teach phonics?
The phonics and word study packs are teaching material and practice for each grade. The bundle has no separate teacher training, so read through a pack yourself before using it with your child. If your child struggles with reading despite steady practice, also talk with a reading specialist or your pediatrician.
How do I get the files?
Right after checkout. A download link arrives by email and stays in your customer account under Orders, so you can download it again later. Print one grade at a time so you are not handling all 24 packs at once, and keep the rest on your computer until you need them.
