The real problem
Sixth grade in Portland this year
Sixth grade is where fractions turn into equations and where reading moves toward longer texts full of academic words. A child who still guesses at dividing fractions or skips unfamiliar words starts to fall behind quietly. Portland families are also following several district discussions. A draft PPS policy, presented to the board's policy committee on September 22, 2026, would cap screen time in the grades above K–2, and the board had already backed a pause on AI software in June 2026. Under Gov. Tina Kotek's 2025 executive order, districts had to fully implement a student cellphone policy by January 1, 2026. School days are moving toward less screen use, and home practice on paper fits that direction. For homeschool families, Oregon asks for a one-time notice to the local Education Service District and testing at the end of grades 3, 5, 8 and 10 with a test from the State Board's approved list, given by a neutral, qualified tester. Sixth grade is not a test year, which leaves two years before the grade 8 test to build fractions, equations and reading habits. Families choose their own curriculum, and the state points them to its standards as a reference.
Why it fits
What the six parts cover
Four literacy packs and two complete math units. Here is how each serves a Portland sixth grader.
- Fractions Complete practices adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions, the base that equations build on.
- Terms and Equations introduces terms and equations, the natural next step once fractions are steady.
- Grade 6 Phonics & Academic Word Study works on roots, prefixes and patterns in longer words.
- Writing prompts include vocabulary and editing tools, so your child revises instead of stopping at a draft.
- The Lighthouse Mystery is a reading comprehension story for practice with a longer text.
- Grade 6 Grammar Practice covers sentence types and parts of speech in short printable pages.
Getting started
Suggested pacing for a sixth grade year
Treat this as a starting point. Adjust it to homework, the school calendar or your homeschool schedule.
- Autumn: fractions firstWork through Fractions Complete before anything else in math. If dividing fractions is still shaky, slow down here for a few extra weeks rather than rushing ahead to equations.
- Autumn: weekly writingPair one writing prompt a week with the editing tools. Keep each draft and its revision together in a folder so your child can see how the piece improved.
- Winter: terms and equationsBegin Terms and Equations once fractions feel steady. Short sessions of a few problems at a time keep a new topic from turning into a nightly struggle.
- Winter: word study with readingUse Academic Word Study alongside The Lighthouse Mystery. Have your child mark roots and prefixes found in the story and guess the meaning before checking.
- Spring: grammar review and recordsReturn to the grammar pages for review. Homeschool families can keep finished pages as a record of the year ahead of the grade 8 test.
What to buy
Which purchase fits your sixth grader
The 6th Grade Practice Bundle at $44.99 (parts $64.94) covers both literacy practice and the fractions-to-equations step. If math is already strong and you only want literacy, the Grade 6 ELA Pack costs $10.99 (parts $14.96). For a child ready to move ahead, the Middle School Math Core Units Bundle ($89.99, parts $144.94) has six units for Grades 7–9, from linear functions to the Pythagorean theorem. The Algebra Foundations Bundle ($59.99, parts $79.96) adds four workbooks on expressions, equations, real numbers and ratio for extra algebra practice.
Honest limits
Where this bundle stops
It is not written for Oregon. There are no Oregon standards codes, no social science content for the grade 6/7 world history sequence and no science, and it is not approved by the state or PPS. It is practice, not a complete sixth grade course. PPS students should put their teacher's work first, and homeschool families should check current rules with the state or a homeschool legal resource. You supply printing and paper. Your purchase covers your own household; a co-op or learning pod needs to contact Teach Lessons first. Within 7 days, a bundle that misses the mark can be traded for store credit of equal value, though not for cash.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Is this aligned with Oregon's math and ELA standards?
No. The bundle is not aligned with Oregon's standards and has not been endorsed or approved by the Oregon Department of Education or Portland Public Schools. It practices common sixth grade skills: grammar, writing, academic word study, reading, fractions and equations. Compare it with the state standards yourself, or ask your child's teacher which topics the class covers this year.
Will it help with Oregon's homeschool tests?
Oregon tests homeschooled students at the end of grades 3, 5, 8 and 10 with a test from the State Board's approved list. Sixth grade is not a testing year. The bundle builds general skills, but it is not prep for any approved test and makes no promise about scores. Check current testing rules with your Education Service District or the state.
Does my child need a device?
No. Every page can be printed, and nothing in the bundle needs an app, account or login. That works for families who want to keep home practice off screens while PPS discusses screen-time caps. Slides are included, and you can show them on a screen if you choose.
My child struggles with fractions. Where should we start?
Start with Fractions Complete and stay there until adding and subtracting feel easy; multiplying and dividing come next. Short, regular practice works better than one long session. If the idea of equal parts itself is missing, the Elementary Math Units Bundle for Grades 3–5 starts earlier, with fractions shown in visual models.
Can I use it for two children?
If both are your own children, yes. The licence covers your own family. Tutoring groups, co-ops or a learning pod with other families should send Teach Lessons a short message first. The bundle is written for Grade 6, so a younger or older sibling may need a different grade's bundle.
What if it is not right for us?
You have 7 days to swap it for store credit of the same value. Cash is not refunded. The files arrive right after purchase, by email and in your account under Orders, so look through them in the first few days and decide in time. Starting with one unit is the quickest way to tell.
