Rhode Island High School English: Nine Units on Text Analysis and Writing

If you teach high school English in Rhode Island and want a literature and writing strand you can teach as written, the High School ELA Text Analysis & Writing Bundle has nine units for $109.99, from characterization and argumentative essays to Macbeth, Orwell's 1984 and political speeches. It is not built on the Rhode Island Core Standards for ELA/Literacy, so you check each unit against them and your department map.

Quick answer

The High School ELA Text Analysis & Writing Bundle ($109.99) gives a Rhode Island English teacher nine ready units: analysis vocabulary, characterization, argumentative essays, political cartoons, political speeches and rhetoric, Macbeth, Orwell's 1984, the American Dream, and listening and viewing comprehension. It works as a strand inside a Grades 9–12 course. It is not aligned to or approved under the Rhode Island Core Standards for ELA/Literacy, and it is not a full-year course.

The real problem

What a Rhode Island English department is balancing

The Rhode Island Core Standards for ELA/Literacy were endorsed on March 9, 2021, and they sit behind every English course map in the state. Matching them is the department's work, and it is slow work, because the standards describe skills while teachers need actual texts, tasks and rubrics. At the same time, the secondary regulations that start with the class of 2028 change what high schools have to document. Students must show civics proficiency, and the state allows that through a course, an assessment, a project or embedded curriculum. Financial literacy proficiency works the same way. In some schools, that means English teachers are asked whether their units can carry part of that load, for example through work on political speeches, persuasion or media. Then there is the daily problem of range. One class can hold strong readers, students who avoid writing, and English learners, for whom RIDE lists the WIDA ELD Standards and ACCESS assessments among its resources. A unit that only works for the top third does not help much. What saves time is a set of units with clear analysis language, structured writing steps and answer material, which you can then adjust for your students and your map.

Why it fits

Where the nine units fit a Rhode Island English course

Use them as finished blocks inside your existing sequence. These connections come up most often.

  • Analysis Vocabulary and Operators gives ninth graders shared terms before any longer literary essay.
  • Characterisation and Analysing Fiction works with the short stories or novels your department already teaches.
  • Writing a Comment and Argumentative Essay walks students through planning a structured argument step by step.
  • Political speeches and cartoons units may interest whoever coordinates embedded civics work in your school.
  • Macbeth and Orwell's 1984 give complete units for two texts many Grades 10–12 courses read.
  • The listening and viewing pack offers extra comprehension practice that helps English learners and quieter students.

Getting started

A sample order across one year

This sequence is a suggestion. Your department map, text list and grade level decide where each unit goes.

  1. Map units to the 2021 ELA standardsBefore teaching, list the nine units next to the Rhode Island Core Standards for ELA/Literacy for your grade, and mark what each one gives you and what still needs your own material.
  2. Start with analysis vocabularyTeach Analysis Vocabulary and Operators in the first weeks. Then follow with Characterisation and Analysing Fiction so students apply the terms to a story right away.
  3. Teach argument before rhetoricRun the argumentative essay unit in the fall. Students who have written their own argument read political speeches and cartoons more sharply in the next block.
  4. Give a long text its own blockChoose Macbeth or 1984 for the winter, depending on your grade and book room. The American Dream unit pairs well with American literature in Grade 11.
  5. Use listening practice as a flex unitKeep the listening and viewing comprehension pack for weeks with testing, assemblies or a substitute, when a full new unit would not get the attention it needs.

What to buy

This bundle or a full English curriculum

For most Rhode Island high school English teachers, the High School ELA Text Analysis & Writing Bundle is the place to start: $109.99 for nine units that cost $224.91 bought separately. If you want broader coverage across Grades 9–12, including short stories, drama, poetry and nonfiction with writing from planning to editing, look at ELA Complete – High School at $149.90, or $189.90 with the Teach-Life-Balance course. Middle school colleagues have ELA Complete – Middle School at $149.90. Buying two Complete Curriculum packages lets you use the code TEACHMORE15 for 15% off; it does not apply to this bundle.

Honest limits

Where this bundle stops

The bundle is not written for Rhode Island. It carries no Rhode Island standards codes, no state assessment practice and no Rhode Island texts, and RIDE has not reviewed or approved it. It does not count as civics or financial literacy proficiency on its own; your school decides that. Compare it with the 2021 ELA standards and your department map before you plan. Novels and plays are not included, so you need copies of Macbeth and 1984. If several teachers in your department want the files, send Teach Lessons a message first. If it is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value, not cash.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is this aligned to the Rhode Island Core Standards for ELA/Literacy?

No. The bundle was not written for Rhode Island and is not aligned to, endorsed by or approved by RIDE. The Rhode Island Core Standards for ELA/Literacy were endorsed on March 9, 2021; compare each unit with them and with your department's course map. The skills involved, like analysis and argument, are common to most English courses, but the check is yours.

Can these units count toward civics proficiency for the class of 2028?

The bundle does not claim that, and we cannot promise it. Rhode Island lets schools show civics proficiency through a course, assessment, project or embedded curriculum, and your school or district decides what counts. If your school uses embedded curriculum, show the speeches and cartoons units to whoever coordinates it and let them decide.

Are the novels and plays included?

No. The units give teaching resources for Macbeth and Orwell's 1984, such as worksheets, activities, slides and answer keys, but not the texts themselves. Use the editions your school already owns or that students can borrow. If your book room is short on copies, plan the order of units so classes can take turns with the same set.

Does it help English learners?

The units use structured steps and analysis vocabulary, and the listening and viewing pack adds extra comprehension practice. They are not written around the WIDA ELD Standards that RIDE lists among its resources, so plan language supports with your EL colleagues as you would for any unit.

Can our English department share one purchase?

The licence is for use in your own teaching. If your department or school wants to use the files, send Teach Lessons a short message before buying so team use is arranged. Public posting or sharing outside your school is not allowed. Tell them roughly how many sections will teach from the units.

What if the units do not fit our course?

Compare the nine unit titles with your text list and course map first. If you buy and the bundle still does not fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value. It is store credit, not a cash refund. You could put the credit toward ELA Complete – High School, for example.
