Quick answer

For Rhode Island Grade 6 and Grade 7 world history, World History Complete – Middle School ($149.90) is a close match in scope. It has 190+ resources on early civilizations, classical civilizations and belief systems, medieval worlds and global connections, early modern periods and cultural exchange, and global interactions, with source and map work throughout. It is not aligned to or approved under Rhode Island's standards and has nothing on Grade 8 government and civic life.

The real problem

Two years of world history, one Rhode Island map

The Revised Rhode Island Social Studies Standards, endorsed in February 2023, split middle school world history cleanly. Grade 6 is Ancient to Medieval World History and Geography. Grade 7 is Early Modern to Modern World History and Geography. Grade 8 then turns to Government and Civic Life in the United States and Rhode Island. In high school the same pattern returns as World History I (Ancient to Medieval) and World History II (Early Modern to Modern). So a sixth or seventh grade teacher is laying the first layer of a sequence students will revisit, and the habits they build now, reading a source, placing events on a timeline, explaining cause and consequence, matter more than any single date. That is a lot to build from scratch. Each era needs readings at several levels, maps, a timeline task and a way to check understanding. Rhode Island also has a Holocaust education requirement dating from 2016, and it is listed among states with a Black history requirement. Where those topics fall in your school's grades is something to confirm with your district, because a middle school world history course will touch on them unevenly. The goal is a course that follows the state's split and still leaves you time to teach.

Why it fits

How the curriculum follows Rhode Island's Grade 6–7 split

The content sections line up naturally with the two middle school world history years.

  • Early civilizations and ancient societies open Grade 6 Ancient to Medieval World History and Geography.
  • Classical civilizations and belief systems carry the sixth grade year from the ancient world toward the medieval era.
  • Medieval worlds and global connections bridge the end of Grade 6 into the start of Grade 7.
  • Early modern periods, cultural exchange and global interactions give Grade 7 most of its core content.
  • Maps, timelines and source tasks build the geography and history skills both grades share.
  • Differentiated worksheets let mixed-ability classes work on the same era at different reading levels.

Getting started

A sample plan across Grades 6 and 7

This is a suggested split, not a state pacing guide. Your district's map decides the final order.

  1. Check units against the 2023 standardsLay the curriculum's sections beside the Grade 6 and Grade 7 world history and geography standards, and note gaps such as specific regions your district emphasizes.
  2. Grade 6 fall: the first civilizationsTeach the early civilizations and ancient societies units with plenty of map work, so geography is built into the history from the first week. Keep a running class timeline on the wall.
  3. Grade 6 spring: classical to medievalMove through classical civilizations and belief systems into medieval worlds. Finish the year with global connections to set up seventh grade. Use the source tasks on belief systems for short writing.
  4. Grade 7: early modern to globalPick up with early modern periods and cultural exchange, then global interactions. Use the source analysis tasks to keep historical thinking at the center. Students compare cultures and trade routes in short writing tasks.
  5. Plan required topics separatelyAsk your district where Holocaust and Black history instruction sits in your school's grades, and add resources for those topics where the curriculum does not cover them.

Honest limits

What this curriculum is not

It is not written for Rhode Island and has no Rhode Island content, no state standards codes and nothing on Grade 8 Government and Civic Life in the United States and Rhode Island. RIDE has not reviewed or approved it. Compare it with the Revised Rhode Island Social Studies Standards and your district map before you plan. Required topics such as Holocaust education need their own planning. Printing is on you. Team or school use needs a short message to Teach Lessons first. If it is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value, not cash.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Does this match the Rhode Island Social Studies Standards?

It was not written for Rhode Island and is not aligned to, endorsed by or approved by RIDE. Its scope, from early civilizations to global interactions, follows the same broad arc as Rhode Island's Grade 6 and Grade 7 world history and geography. Whether each unit matches your standards and district map is a check you make before teaching.

Can I use it for both Grade 6 and Grade 7?

Yes, that is a sensible way to use it. The ancient, classical and medieval sections fit sixth grade, and the early modern and global interactions sections fit seventh. If two teachers each take one grade, send Teach Lessons a short message first so the shared use is covered.

Does it cover the Holocaust?

The middle school curriculum's content runs to early modern periods and global interactions and does not list a Holocaust unit. Rhode Island has had a Holocaust education requirement since 2016. Ask your district where it is taught in your school. The XXL History Teaching Bundle includes World War II if you need modern history material.

Is geography included?

Map work runs through the curriculum: students read maps, place events on timelines and work with images and texts. It is not a separate geography course, so check the geography parts of the Rhode Island standards and add what your district expects beyond that. Geography-heavy lessons on specific regions may need extra material.

What do I get after paying?

A digital download with worksheets, activities, slides and answer keys for print and digital classrooms. The link comes by email right after purchase and also appears in your customer account under Orders, so you can start planning the same day. Nothing ships physically. Print what you need.

What if it does not work for my classes?

Compare the content sections with your Grade 6 or Grade 7 map before buying. If you buy and it is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value. It is store credit, not a cash refund. The credit can be used on another history product, such as the Middle School History Units Bundle.
