Sell teaching resources in Canada: a guide for Canadian teacher-authors

Seller guide: Canada

Canadian teachers sit between two markets: provincial curricula at home and a large US audience next door that prints on the same US Letter paper. TeachLessons lets you sell to both, from any province or territory.

Short answer: Yes, Canadian teachers can sell teaching resources on TeachLessons. Apply with the short form, email your files to support@stifo.de, set prices in US dollars and keep 70% of net revenue. Payouts are sent monthly via PayPal in US dollars. You can sell to Canadian and US classrooms, including French immersion, with no fees or exclusivity.

Who will buy my Canadian teaching resources?

Our buyers are teachers, schools and homeschool families, mainly in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Singapore and international schools. For a Canadian author, that usually means two groups: colleagues across Canada who want resources tied to their provincial curriculum, and US teachers who want good material for the same grade levels. Many resources work for both with small changes in wording.

Provincial curriculum

Resources mapped to Ontario, BC, Alberta or another province's expectations. Fewer authors serve these well, which helps.

Canadian content

Canadian history, geography, Indigenous perspectives, Remembrance Day and Canadian money for math. Hard to find, valued by buyers.

Shared skills

Phonics, math facts, writing process and science inquiry that suit both Canadian and US classrooms.

How should I label provincial curriculum coverage?

Education is run provincially, so "Grade 4 science" means different things in Ontario and British Columbia. Name the province and the strand or big idea in your description: "Ontario Grade 4 Science, Habitats and Communities" or "BC Grade 7 Social Studies, aligned to the curricular competencies". A teacher in that province will find it; a teacher elsewhere will know whether to adapt it.

  • Describe alignment in your own words. Don't paste long passages of curriculum documents into the resource.
  • If a resource suits several provinces, list the ones you have checked rather than writing "all of Canada".
  • For resources about Indigenous peoples and histories, use accurate, respectful terminology, name specific nations rather than generalizing, and avoid sacred symbols or stories that aren't yours to share.
  • If you also want US buyers, add the general skill ("compare habitats") so the listing makes sense outside Canada.

Should I use Canadian spelling and US Letter?

Use Canadian spelling for Canadian buyers: colour, centre, neighbour, cheque, and Grade rather than Year. US teachers rarely mind "colour" in a science sort, but in spelling and phonics resources the difference matters. Say in the description which spelling a resource uses. If a spelling pack does well, a separate US-spelling version can be listed as its own resource.

Canada and the US both print on US Letter (8.5 x 11 in), so your normal layout suits both markets. If you want to reach international schools, an A4 version is a bonus. Our guide on selling worksheets and printables covers print setup.

Can I sell French immersion and core French resources?

Yes. Resources for French immersion and core French are language-teaching resources for English-speaking classrooms, which fit the program. French immersion teachers in particular often struggle to find material at the right level that matches English-stream content, so well-made resources can stand out.

  • State the level clearly: early immersion, middle immersion, core French, and the grade.
  • Include an English teacher note or answer key, so a non-specialist or substitute teacher can use it.
  • Check accents and grammar carefully. Resources go live as soon as they are set up, with no separate approval round.
  • Use your own texts and images. Don't scan pages from French readers or textbooks.

How do US dollar payouts work for Canadian sellers?

You set prices in US dollars, and payouts go out monthly, by the 15th, for the previous month's sales, via PayPal in US dollars, with a statement listing every sale. You can keep the balance in US dollars in PayPal or convert it; any conversion rate or fee is PayPal's, so check it in your account.

Your price (USD) Payout per sale (USD)
$3.50 $2.38
$5.00 $3.40
$10.00 $6.79
$20.00 $13.58

Payout = price x 0.97 x 0.70, or 67.9% of the price. Our suggestion of at least $4.99 per single resource is optional; you decide. Try other prices in the payout calculator.

What about taxes and my teaching contract in Canada?

You're responsible for taxes on your income from resource sales. How it is treated depends on your situation and province, so ask a tax advisor in Canada. If the law requires TeachLessons to withhold tax from a payout, it is deducted and you get a confirmation. Keep your monthly statements; our page on records and taxes for teacher-sellers has general tips on record-keeping.

Whether you can sell resources you created for your board depends on your employment contract, collective agreement and local law. Check your contract or ask your board or teachers' federation before selling anything made as part of your job.

How do I start selling from Canada?

Apply with the short application form, which takes about five minutes. We email you the seller documents: the Seller Agreement, payout form, Resource Rights Checklist, the Resource Submission List and a one-page guide. Sign the agreement, list one resource per row (including province, grade and spelling in the description), and send everything in one email to support@stifo.de with your files, previews and thumbnails as PNG or JPEG. For many files, send one Drive, Dropbox or WeTransfer link.

We confirm receipt within 2 business days, write your product pages and set up your author page and landing pages. Your resources go live as soon as they are set up. You keep your copyright and can sell the same resources anywhere else.
