The real problem
Fitting world history into a South Dakota elementary year
South Dakota's content standards come from the South Dakota Board of Education Standards, which the state reviews every five to seven years. Social studies standards are published with codes such as 4.H.2.3, and that particular one shows what fourth grade is about: it asks students to describe the influence of notable South Dakotans on the development of the state. So Grade 4 history is home history, and a medieval block does not belong at its center. What the state places in Grades 1–3, and in which grade students first meet world history, we could not confirm, so please check the current social studies standards on the Department of Education site or ask your district before planning. In practice, many elementary teachers use a world history topic as an enrichment block, a spring study, or a theme for a class that reads well and wants something beyond the local. Knights and Vikings are easy to get young children excited about. The hard part is giving them more than pictures: reading at their level, a real task with a source, and a way to check what they learned. Homeschool families in South Dakota choose their own materials under the alternative instruction law, so for them a medieval block is simply a matter of fitting it into the year.
Why it fits
How the medieval units work in South Dakota classrooms
Use them as a self-contained block next to the history your standards require.
- Knights & Castles gives a first medieval unit that young students follow easily from the pictures alone.
- Life in a Medieval Town compares town life then with how people live in communities today.
- Vikings: Life, Ships & Journeys adds travel, trade and maps to the medieval study.
- Old Trades & Crafts shows how work changed, from the blacksmith to the baker.
- Differentiated worksheets with word banks let early readers and fluent readers share one lesson.
- Answer keys and slides for every sub-unit mean a substitute can teach a lesson as written.
Getting started
A sample medieval block over one term
This pacing is only a suggestion; check your district's map before deciding where the block goes.
- Confirm where world history fitsLook up the current South Dakota social studies standards for your grade or ask your district, and decide whether the block is core content, enrichment or a spring theme.
- Start with knights and castlesOpen with Knights & Castles in the Middle Ages. Its three sub-units give students the basic picture of medieval life before the other topics build on it.
- Move into town lifeTeach Life in a Medieval Town next, and have students compare a medieval market with the shops and jobs in their own town. Keep the comparison simple and visual.
- Add the trades unitOld Trades & Crafts fits right after the town unit, since students have already seen where smiths and bakers worked. Its project activity makes a good display.
- End with the VikingsClose with Vikings: Life, Ships & Journeys. The maps and travel routes give a strong finish and a natural link to later lessons on exploration.
What to buy
Medieval only, or more of the ancient and early world
The Medieval World for Kids Bundle is the right buy for a single medieval block: $69.99 for four units that cost $99.96 separately. If you want ancient history instead or as well, the Ancient Civilizations Bundle ($99.99, parts $199.92) covers Egypt, Greece, Rome, China, the Stone Age and the Vikings. The Ancient Egypt Unit Bundle ($69.99) works for an Egypt study across Grades 1–6. Teachers and homeschool families who want history for the whole of Grades 1–4 get better value from the Elementary History Curriculum: all 20 units for $169.99, parts $499.80, including the four medieval units.
Honest limits
What to know before you buy
These units are not written for South Dakota. They have no South Dakota history, no state standards codes and nothing on notable South Dakotans, and they have not been reviewed or approved by the state or any district. Check them against the current South Dakota social studies standards and your district map. Homeschool families should confirm current law with the state or a homeschool legal resource. Printing and craft supplies are yours. If your grade team wants to share the files, message Teach Lessons first. Not a fit? Exchange within 7 days for store credit of equal value, not cash.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Do these units match South Dakota's social studies standards?
They were not written for South Dakota and are not aligned to, endorsed by or approved by the state or any district. South Dakota publishes its social studies standards with codes such as 4.H.2.3, and fourth grade centers on South Dakota history. Look up the current standards for your grade, or ask your district, and decide whether a medieval block fits as core or enrichment.
Which grades are the units for?
All four units are written for Grades 1–4. The worksheets are differentiated and come with reading passages and word banks, so a first grade class and a fourth grade class can both use them, with more support for the younger group. Fourth graders can also take on the project activities more independently.
Can homeschool families in South Dakota use this?
Yes. South Dakota families homeschool under alternative instruction (SDCL 13-27-3) and notify the Department of Education within 30 days of starting. Families choose their own materials. Check current requirements with the state or a homeschool legal resource; this is a summary, not legal advice. The answer keys help a parent check work quickly.
How long does the bundle last?
Each unit has an overview and three sub-units. Teaching one sub-unit a week gives about twelve weeks for the whole bundle, but you can go faster or pick one or two units for a shorter block. Pacing is your choice. A tighter plan of one unit per month also works.
Can my grade team share it?
The licence covers your own teaching. If other teachers on your team want to use the files, send Teach Lessons a short message before buying. Posting the files online or sharing them outside your school is not allowed. Say how many teachers would use the units, and Teach Lessons will reply before you check out.
What if the units are not what I need?
Check the four unit titles and the grade band before buying. If they still do not fit, you can exchange the bundle within 7 days for store credit of equal value. It is store credit, not a cash refund. You might put the credit toward the Ancient Civilizations Bundle or the Ancient Egypt Unit Bundle instead, if those suit your plan better.
