The real problem
Why third grade matters for West Virginia homeschoolers
West Virginia offers three ways to homeschool: approval from the county board, a notice of intent, or a learning pod. Under the notice-of-intent option, you file with the county superintendent or board on or before the day home instruction begins. The notice includes an assurance that the child will be taught reading, language, math, science and social studies, an assurance of annual assessment, and proof that the instructor holds a high school diploma or equivalent. The assessment can be a nationally normed standardized test, the public school testing program, a certified teacher's written narrative after reviewing a portfolio, or an alternative agreed with the superintendent, and copies are kept for three years. Grade 3 is one of the years when results are actually submitted to the county superintendent, by June 30, along with grades 5, 8 and 11. Check all of this against current law with your county or a homeschool legal resource. In practice, third grade is the first year someone outside the family sees the results. Place value, multiplication and longer writing all arrive at once, and you want steady practice in each without buying five separate programs.
Why it fits
What the ten resources cover in a West Virginia home
The bundle handles three of the five subject areas named in the notice of intent, reading, language and math, with practice for most days of the week.
- Grade 3 Grammar Mastery covers nouns, pronouns, sentences and punctuation in short practice pages.
- Creative writing prompts and story starters give regular writing you can keep for a portfolio.
- Phonics and word patterns support a child who still struggles with spelling and sound patterns.
- Numbers to 1000 teaches place value, comparing and ordering, number lines and word problems.
- Grade 3 math warm-ups give a short daily start before the main lesson.
- Math Made Easy is a parent guide with workbook for teaching Grade 3 math at home.
Getting started
A suggested weekly rhythm for Grade 3
A rhythm you can adapt. It is not a pacing guide and does not replace your own science and social studies.
- Read the parent guide firstSpend an evening with Math Made Easy before you start. It is written for parents teaching Grade 3 math at home and helps you decide where your child begins.
- Start each morning with a warm-upUse one page of the Grade 3 Math Warm-Up Worksheets each day. A few quiet minutes show you which facts your child still has to stop and think about.
- Teach Numbers to 1000 as the first unitWork through place value, comparing and ordering, and number lines early in the year, then use the two practice packs for review on lighter days.
- Rotate grammar, phonics and writingAlternate the grammar, phonics and creative writing packs across the week, with the vocabulary trainer for short sessions. Keep dated writing samples in a folder.
- Plan ahead for the June 30 reportDecide early which assessment option you will use. If you choose a portfolio review by a certified teacher, the worksheets and writing pieces you saved will be ready.
What to buy
The full bundle or a smaller piece
For most of the reading, language and math practice in Grade 3, the 3rd Grade Practice Bundle at $59.99 is the efficient buy; its ten parts are $95.90 separately. If math is already covered, the Grade 3 ELA Pack ($13.99, parts $19.95) gives you only the grammar, writing, phonics, reading story and vocabulary trainer. Children ready for more math can add the Elementary Math Units Bundle ($69.99, parts $99.96) with fractions, area and perimeter and a test prep toolkit; it also contains Numbers to 1000. If you pick a standardized test for the annual assessment, the Grades 3–5 Test Prep Bundle ($64.99, parts $104.95) has ELA and math toolkits and daily practice.
Honest limits
What this bundle does not do
Nothing in the bundle is written for West Virginia, and it does not satisfy any homeschool requirement by itself. It covers reading, language and math practice only; science and social studies, which the notice of intent also names, need other materials. It is practice packs plus the units named, not a full-year curriculum and not a test. Check the current homeschool rules with your county or a legal resource. Printing is yours. A learning pod sharing it should message Teach Lessons first. If it does not suit, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value, not cash.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does this bundle meet West Virginia homeschool requirements?
No product can do that for you, and this one is not approved, endorsed or aligned with any West Virginia requirement or standard. The notice of intent names five subjects, and this bundle covers practice in reading, language and math only. Confirm the current rules with your county superintendent or a homeschool legal resource; this page is not legal advice.
Does it prepare my child for the third grade assessment?
It gives regular practice in reading, writing and math, which helps with any assessment, but it is not built for a specific test. If you choose a nationally normed test or the public school testing program, find out its format and consider extra practice; the Grades 3–5 Test Prep Bundle is one option.
Can the worksheets go into a portfolio for a certified teacher's review?
Finished worksheets and writing pieces can be part of a portfolio if you choose that option. Keep them dated and in order. What the reviewing teacher wants to see is up to them, so ask well before the end of the year, and keep copies of the assessment for three years.
Is this a complete third grade curriculum?
No. It is ten resources: practice packs plus the Numbers to 1000 unit and the Math Made Easy parent guide with workbook. It does not include science, social studies or a full reading program with novels. Plan to add library books and your own science and history materials.
Can I use it in a learning pod?
The licence covers your own teaching. If you run a learning pod or teach other families' children, send Teach Lessons a short message before buying so group use can be arranged. A brief note is enough to start. Sharing or posting the files online is not allowed.
What if my child is ahead in math?
Numbers to 1000 and the two practice packs will go quickly for a child who is already secure with place value. In that case, look at the Elementary Math Units Bundle for fractions and area and perimeter, or the 4th Grade Practice Bundle, and keep the warm-ups for review.
