West Virginia High School English: Text Analysis and Essay Units

Yes, there is a ready-to-teach analysis and writing strand for West Virginia high school English: nine units on characterization, argumentative essays, political speeches, Macbeth, Orwell's 1984 and the American Dream, written for Grades 9–12. It was not written for West Virginia and carries no state standards codes, so you check it against your county's English expectations and then teach the units in whatever order your course needs.

The real problem

What a West Virginia English teacher is juggling this year

West Virginia high school schedules keep filling up. Policy 2510 sets the graduation rules, and under it students already need four social studies credits, including U.S. Studies and Civics or AP Government and Politics. A prescribed Personal Finance credit has applied since the 2024–2025 freshman cohort, and House Bill 2411 adds a full computer science credit starting with the 2027–2028 freshman cohort. Students arrive with less slack, and every English unit has to earn its place. The hard part is rarely the text. It is everything around it: the vocabulary students need to write about a speech, a worked path from claim to evidence, a clear essay task, and an answer key you can trust. Writing that for Macbeth, a political speech and a dystopian novel in one semester eats weekends. Homeschool families feel this differently. Under the notice-of-intent or learning-pod option, a child is assessed every year, and one accepted route is a written narrative from a certified teacher who reviews a portfolio. Results for grade 11 go to the county superintendent by June 30, so finished analytical essays are worth collecting early.

Why it fits

How the nine units fit a West Virginia English course

Each unit stands alone, so you can slot it wherever your pacing has a gap.

  • Analysis Vocabulary gives ninth graders the terms they need before writing about any text.
  • Political Speeches and Rhetoric pairs naturally with the year your students sit in Civics.
  • Analysing Cartoons walks students through visual argument step by step, a good companion to U.S. Studies.
  • Writing a Comment and Argumentative Essay builds claim-and-evidence writing you reuse in every later unit.
  • Macbeth and Orwell's 1984 give you one drama unit and one novel unit with tasks already written.
  • Homeschool parents can file finished essays in the portfolio a certified teacher reviews each year.

Getting started

A semester plan built from the bundle

One way to spread the nine units across a semester; shift the order to fit your county calendar.

  1. Weeks 1–2: shared analysis vocabularyStart with Analysis Vocabulary and Operators so every later task uses the same terms. Students keep a running glossary and use it in short written responses to a passage you pick.
  2. Characterization with a short storyMove to Characterisation and Analysing Fiction with a short story of your choice. Students trace one character through evidence from the text, which sets up the essay unit that comes next.
  3. One full argument essay as a baselineTeach Writing a Comment and Argumentative Essay before the longer texts. A complete essay at this point gives you something to compare against at the end of the semester.
  4. Speeches and cartoons side by sideRun the political speeches and cartoon units back to back. If your students take Civics this year, tell that teacher what you are reading so the rhetoric work and the civics work reinforce each other.
  5. Macbeth, 1984 and the American DreamClose with the two literature units and The American Dream. Keep the listening and viewing pack in reserve for a lighter day or a day you need sub plans.

Honest limits

What this bundle will not do

It was written for English classrooms in general, not for West Virginia. There is no West Virginia literature unit, no state standards codes and no mapping to your county's pacing guide, so compare the units with the state's ELA standards and your course description yourself. Plan on supplying your own class copies of Macbeth and 1984 if students read the full works. Sharing the files across a department needs a short message to Teach Lessons first. If it does not fit, exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value, not cash.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is this bundle aligned to West Virginia's English standards?

No. It is not aligned to, endorsed by or approved under any West Virginia standard, and it contains no state codes. The units teach skills that most high school English courses include, such as characterization, rhetoric and argument, so you will likely find places where they fit. Compare each unit with the state's ELA standards and your county's course expectations before relying on it.

Can I use it with ninth and twelfth graders in the same year?

Yes. The bundle is written for Grades 9–12 and each unit stands on its own. One workable split: analysis vocabulary, characterization and argument for younger students, with Macbeth, 1984 and the political speeches unit kept for older ones. Treat that as a suggestion, not a fixed sequence.

Does teaching these units count toward graduation in West Virginia?

Materials do not change how credit is awarded. Graduation credits are set under Policy 2510 and recorded by your school or county. Ask your counselor or county office how English credits are assigned. The bundle is classroom material you teach inside a course that already exists.

We homeschool under a notice of intent. Does this help with the yearly assessment?

It can give you strong work to show. One assessment route is a written narrative from a certified teacher who reviews a portfolio, and finished essays from the argument, characterization and Macbeth units make good portfolio pieces. Grade 11 results go to the county superintendent by June 30. Check current rules with the state or a homeschool legal resource; this is not legal advice.

Can our English department share one copy?

Not without asking first. The licence covers your own teaching. For use across a team or a whole school, send Teach Lessons a short message before buying. Please do not place the files anywhere public or on a drive open to students outside your own classes.

How soon can I teach from it?

Right away. The download link arrives by email after checkout and also sits in your customer account under Orders. The materials are worksheets, activities, slides and answer keys for print or digital classrooms, so a unit can go on next week's plan the day you buy it.
