West Virginia Math Units for Grades 7–9: Equations to Parabolas
West Virginia Math Units for Grades 7–9: Equations to Parabolas
For West Virginia classes in Grades 7–9, the Middle School Math Core Units Bundle gives you six ready units on the topics students need before high school algebra and geometry: equations, linear functions, the Pythagorean theorem, quadratics, percentages and interest, and probability. It is not a full-year course and was not built around West Virginia's math standards, so check each unit against your county's pacing before you schedule it.
View the six math unitsThe Middle School Math Core Units Bundle costs $89.99 and contains six units: Terms and Equations, Linear Functions, The Pythagorean Theorem – Applications, Quadratic Functions and Parabolas, Percentages and Interest, and Chance & Events. Use it to cover core topics between Grade 7 and the first year of high school. It is a set of units rather than a complete course, and it carries no West Virginia alignment or approval.

The real problem
Why Grades 7–9 math feels tight in West Virginia right now
The students in your Grade 8 room this year are the 2027–2028 freshman cohort, the first group that House Bill 2411 requires to earn a full computer science credit. They also follow the Personal Finance credit that Policy 2510 has prescribed since the 2024–2025 freshman cohort. Both courses lean on math students should already own: setting up an equation, reading a linear graph, working with percentages and interest. A gap in Grade 7 or 8 shows up later as a student who cannot follow a loan example or a loop that counts. Meanwhile the middle grades are where classes spread out the most. Some students are ready for parabolas, others are still unsure what a variable stands for. Writing two versions of every worksheet is not realistic for one teacher. Homeschooling families have a fixed checkpoint too. Families who file a notice of intent arrange an annual assessment, and results for grade 8 are submitted to the county superintendent by June 30.
Why it fits
Where each unit earns its place
Every unit works on its own, so you can use one to fill a gap or run all six in order.
- Terms and Equations rebuilds variable sense for Grade 7 students who never quite settled it.
- Linear Functions covers slope and intercept, the graph reading later courses take for granted.
- Percentages and Interest gives future Personal Finance students practice with everyday money problems first.
- The Pythagorean Theorem – Applications puts the formula into measurement problems rather than drills alone.
- Quadratic Functions and Parabolas lets your strongest Grade 8 or 9 students move ahead.
- Chance & Events uses dice experiments, a hands-on change of pace in an algebra-heavy year.
Getting started
A suggested order across two years
These units do not form one grade's full course. Here is one way to spread them over Grades 7 to 9.
- Grade 7 fall: Terms and EquationsOpen with expressions and equations while habits are still forming. Use the worksheets as short daily checks so you see early which students need more time with variables.
- Grade 7 spring: Chance & EventsRun the probability unit with its dice experiments in spring, when a hands-on unit helps attention. It also gives students practice talking about data and chance.
- Grade 8: linear functions and PythagorasTeach the Linear Functions Unit, then The Pythagorean Theorem – Applications. Together they give your incoming 2027–2028 freshmen solid footing in graphs and in geometry.
- Grade 8 or 9: percentages and interestUse Percentages and Interest just before students reach high school. Tell the Personal Finance teacher you have covered it so they can build on it rather than reteach it.
- Grade 9 or advanced 8: quadraticsClose with Quadratic Functions and Parabolas for students ready to move on. Others can revisit linear functions during the same weeks with their own set of tasks.
What to buy
Choosing between the math bundles
The Middle School Math Core Units Bundle at $89.99 fits most Grades 7–9 classrooms; the six parts cost $144.94 on their own. If your students are a step behind, the Middle School Math Starter Bundle ($54.99, parts $77.96) starts earlier with fractions, compass constructions and algebraic expressions. For algebra practice in depth, the Algebra Foundations Bundle ($59.99, parts $79.96) adds four workbooks. Teaching an Algebra 1 group in Grade 8 or 9? The Algebra 1 Pathway Bundle ($44.99, parts $59.97) covers linear systems and quadratics.
Honest limits
Honest limits before you buy
These units are written for math classrooms in general, not for West Virginia, and they include no state standards codes. Check them against the state's current math standards and your county's course maps. The bundle is six units, not a full Grade 7, 8 or 9 course, so you supply the rest of the year. No calculators, software or manipulatives are included. Sharing across a math department needs a short message to Teach Lessons first. Within 7 days you can exchange it for store credit of equal value if it is not a fit; there is no cash refund.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Does this match West Virginia's math standards?
It is not aligned to, endorsed by or approved under West Virginia's math standards, and you will not find state codes in it. The topics are common middle grades math, so overlap is likely, but you should compare each unit with the state's current standards and your county's course map. Your district math office can tell you which version applies this year.
Is it enough for my whole Grade 8 year?
No. Six units cover major topics but not a full year of any single grade. The bundle works best to fill specific gaps, to give advanced students somewhere to move ahead, or to anchor a review block. You plan the rest of the year from your existing course materials.
Will these units prepare students for the computer science credit?
The bundle teaches math, not computer science, and buying it does not meet any requirement. Comfort with variables, equations and linear graphs does help when students first meet programming. Ask your school or county office what the new computer science course will expect of the 2027–2028 freshman cohort.
Can my homeschooled eighth grader use it ahead of the assessment?
Yes, the units work for one learner at a kitchen table as well as a full class. For grade 8, families filing a notice of intent submit assessment results to the county superintendent by June 30. Check the current rules with the state or a homeschool legal resource; this is not legal advice.
How do the answer keys help with mixed-ability classes?
With answer keys ready, students can check their own practice while you work with a small group. You might put stronger students on the quadratics unit while others revisit linear functions, then swap focus. It also saves you writing a separate key for every worksheet.
What if the bundle is not what I expected?
Within 7 days of purchase you can exchange it for store credit of equal value. That credit can go toward a different math bundle or any other product in the store. There is no cash refund, so read the unit list on the product page before you buy.
