Oregon High School Biology: Six Ready Units for Grades 9–12
Oregon High School Biology: Six Ready Units for Grades 9–12
If you teach high school biology in Oregon and need finished units for the big topics, the High School Biology Units Bundle gives you six of them for $89.99: photosynthesis, evolution, primate social behavior, chromatography, ecosystem management and climate change. It is written for any state, so you check it against Oregon's science standards and your course map yourself before you build it into the year.
See the biology bundleThe High School Biology Units Bundle ($89.99) is a good fit for an Oregon biology teacher who wants six major topics ready to teach: photosynthesis and plant metabolism, evolution and the origin of life, primate social behavior, chromatography in metabolic physiology, ecosystem management, and climate change. It is not built on Oregon's science standards and has no Oregon-specific content. Treat it as a set of units for a course you plan, not a full year.

The real problem
Where an Oregon biology year gets stretched
Oregon's education department lists its science standards with a 2022 date on its standards pages. The exact official title is worth confirming on the ODE site before you start writing unit plans, because your district's course map will be built on that document rather than on any publisher's outline. That is the first job, and nobody can do it for you. The second job is the one that eats evenings: turning each standard into readings, data tasks and a quiz for students who read at very different levels. Biology is also the course where interruptions hurt most. In September 2020 several Oregon districts closed or delayed their start because of wildfires, evacuations, poor air quality and power outages. A teacher who has a climate or ecosystem unit already printed is in a much better spot on a disrupted week than one who is still drafting. Then there is the classroom itself. Oregon put a restriction on student phones in place by executive order in 2025, so lessons that run on paper, slides and discussion fit the room better than tasks that assume a phone in every hand. The units below are built that way.
Why it fits
How the six units sit in an Oregon biology course
Use these as finished blocks inside the sequence your district already has. Here is where each one tends to land.
- Photosynthesis and Plant Metabolism covers energy flow in plants for your matter and energy block.
- Evolution and the Origin of Life gives a complete unit for the evolution strand of most biology courses.
- Ecosystem Management fits Oregon classes that study forests, watersheds and land use in their own region.
- Climate Change and the Anthropogenic Greenhouse Effect pairs well with local talk about fire seasons and smoke.
- Chromatography in Metabolic Physiology adds a lab-method unit; you supply any chemicals and equipment yourself.
- Primate Social Behavior works as an elective-style unit for behavior, evolution or an honors extension.
Getting started
One way to place the units across a semester
This is a suggested order, not a state pacing guide. Shift units to match your district map and lab schedule.
- Check the 2022 science standards firstOpen the Oregon science standards and your course map, then mark which of the six units overlaps which strand. Anything that does not match becomes enrichment or gets left out.
- Start with plant metabolismPhotosynthesis and Plant Metabolism is a solid early unit because it sets up energy and matter ideas you return to in ecosystems and climate later in the term.
- Place the chromatography lab mid-termRun Chromatography in Metabolic Physiology once students are comfortable with lab safety in your room. Order the materials early, since the download includes the teaching resources only.
- Teach evolution as its own blockGive Evolution and the Origin of Life a full block of its own, then follow it with Primate Social Behavior if you have honors students or extra weeks before the break.
- Close with ecosystems and climateEnd the semester with Ecosystem Management and the climate change unit. Keep one of them printed and filed as your backup for a smoke day or a substitute.
What to buy
Which biology product to buy
Most Oregon biology teachers should start with the High School Biology Units Bundle: $89.99 for six units that cost $149.94 bought separately. If your course leans toward environmental science, the Environmental Science Units Bundle ($69.99, parts $124.95) adds a climate data lab with real data, natural resource extraction and climate ethics. A health, culinary or family and consumer sciences teacher will get more from the High School Nutrition Science Curriculum ($119.99, ten units). Teachers who also cover upper-level chemistry can add the High School Chemistry Units Bundle ($89.99, seven units, Grades 10–12).
Honest limits
What this bundle leaves to you
These units are not written for Oregon. They carry no Oregon standards codes, no Oregon case studies and no state-specific content, and they have not been reviewed or approved by ODE or any district. Six units are not a full biology year; cells and genetics, for example, are not among them. Compare each unit with the 2022 science standards and your course map before you commit. Lab equipment and chemicals for the chromatography unit are yours to supply. If your department wants to share the files, message Teach Lessons first. If the bundle is not a fit, you can exchange it within 7 days for store credit of equal value, not cash.
Good to know
Frequently asked questions
Is this bundle aligned to Oregon's science standards?
No. It was not written for Oregon and has not been reviewed, approved or endorsed by the Oregon Department of Education or any district. ODE lists its science standards with a 2022 date; confirm the exact title on the ODE standards page, then compare each unit with it and with your course map. Many topics will overlap with what a biology course covers, but whether they match your standards is a call you make.
Is this enough for a full year of biology?
No. It is six units on major topics, not a complete scope and sequence. Cells, genetics and body systems, for example, are not in it. Most teachers use it to fill the units they have not built yet, or to replace weak ones, and keep their own materials for the rest of the course.
Does it work if school closes for smoke or a power outage?
It helps if you prepare before it happens. Everything is a digital download, so you can print a unit's worksheets and answer keys in advance and keep them filed for a substitute or a short-notice change. On a day without power at home, students cannot open slides, so paper copies are the reliable option.
Do students need phones or laptops?
No device is required by the units. They are worksheets, activities, slides and answer keys you can use in print or on whatever screens your school already has. That suits classrooms working under Oregon's 2025 phone restriction, and it means you choose when technology comes into the lesson.
Can our whole science department use one copy?
The licence covers use in your own teaching. If several teachers or a whole department want to use the files, send a short message to Teach Lessons before buying so the team use is settled first. Posting the files on a public site or sharing them outside your school is not allowed.
What if the units do not match my course?
Check the unit list against your course map before buying, because that is the quickest way to know. If you buy and it is not a fit, you can exchange the bundle within 7 days for store credit of equal value. It is store credit, not a cash refund.
