Statistics and transformations for Grades 6–8

Two middle school math units that ask students to explain their answers. Grade 6 students work with data from dot plots to box plots, and Grade 8 students move shapes on the coordinate plane and argue about congruence and similarity.

In short: Statistics and Data (Grade 6) has eight lessons on statistical questions, frequency, dot plots, histograms, mean and median, spread and MAD, box plots and quartiles, and comparing data sets, plus eight data investigations. Geometric Transformations (Grade 8) has eight lessons on mappings, translations, reflections, rotations, dilations, congruence, similarity, and angles, lines and arguments, plus a coordinate transformation lab. Each lesson has an explanation, a practice page and a case card, and both teacher guides include answers.

Two units

Why data and transformations sit together

Statistics and transformations look unrelated, but they ask students for the same habit: read a representation carefully and say what it shows. A box plot and a reflected triangle are both pictures that carry information, and the weaker students in both units are the ones who describe the picture without drawing a conclusion from it.

The units are written for different grades. Statistics and Data is for Grade 6 and Geometric Transformations is for Grade 8. In the UK and Australia they sit roughly in Year 7 and Year 9, since Year = US grade + 1. Both follow the same lesson pattern, an explanation with a worked example, a supported practice page and an application case, so your classroom routine carries across.

Grade 6 statistics

Eight lessons from questions to comparisons

The Statistics and Data unit starts with the question itself. Lesson 1 is Statistical questions, where students learn that a statistical question expects variation in the answers. Lesson 2, Data and frequency, builds the tables behind every display. Lessons 3 and 4 move to dot plots and histograms. A page called One data set, three displays shows the same data in three forms so students can compare what each one makes easy to see and what it hides.

Lessons 5 and 6 cover mean and median, then spread and MAD. Lesson 7 introduces box plots and quartiles, and Lesson 8, Compare and communicate, asks students to write about two data sets. Eight data investigations ask students to compute and explain center and spread, and the teacher guide has a key for each one. The unit has 41 classroom pages and a 21-page teacher guide.

In the classroom

Where Grade 6 students get stuck in statistics

Three points come up again and again. Students call the mean "the typical value" even when one extreme value drags it away, so ask them to compute both the mean and the median and say which describes the group better and why. They draw a histogram like a bar chart, with gaps and categories, so ask what each bar spans before they label it. And they find the center of a data set and stop there, so ask a second question every time: how spread out is it?

The data investigations suit this. Each one asks for center and spread together, which keeps students from reporting a single number. Marking is quicker when you check the explanation sentence first. If the sentence says what the numbers mean for the group, the arithmetic is usually secure. If it only repeats the numbers, the lesson needs revisiting.

Grade 8 transformations

Eight lessons from mappings to angle arguments

Geometric Transformations opens with Mappings and corresponding points, so that students have the language of image and original before any movement. Lessons 2 to 5 give each transformation its own lesson: translations, reflections, rotations and dilations. Lesson 6 is Congruence and Lesson 7 is Similarity, where students use the transformations they now know to explain why two shapes match or why one is a scaled copy of another.

Lesson 8, Angles, lines and arguments, is where the unit turns toward proof and counterexample. Students are asked to justify a claim, not just state it. The unit has 33 classroom pages and a 13-page teacher guide with answers, plus a learning check and a project made of a brief, a record and a reflection page.

The coordinate lab

Exact rules and labeled axes

A coordinate transformation lab page asks students to use exact rules and labeled axes. That wording is a useful standard for the whole unit. A rule such as "move the point three right and two up" is exact. "Move it over a bit" is not. Ask students to write the rule first, then plot, then check that the image matches the rule.

A common slip with reflections is to flip across the wrong line or to count the distance from the wrong point. A fast check is to ask whether the line sits halfway between each point and its image. For dilations, ask students to compare side lengths before and after and state the scale factor as a number. These checks take under a minute and show whether a student sees the rule or is copying a picture. The material is closest to Common Core Grade 6 statistics and Grade 8 geometry, with no claim of alignment.

Pacing

A planning guide for both units

The material gives no timings, so this is a suggested plan. Allow about one period per lesson, and extra time for the investigations, the lab and the projects.

Questions teachers ask

Frequently asked questions

Which grades are the units written for?

Statistics and Data is written for Grade 6 and Geometric Transformations for Grade 8. In the UK and Australia they sit roughly in Year 7 and Year 9.

Are answers included?

Yes. Each separate teacher guide has answers and teaching notes for all eight lessons. The statistics guide also has a key for each of the eight data investigations.

How long does each unit take?

The material gives no timings, so plan by lesson. Allow about one period for each lesson, plus time for the investigations or the lab and for the project.

Do I need special equipment?

The units are printable pages. Students need a pencil and a ruler, and graph paper is a useful extra for the transformations unit.

Can I edit the pages?

Yes. Each unit includes editable DOCX text editions of the classroom material and the teacher guide. The PDF is the print reference.

Are the units endorsed by a state or exam board?

No. TeachLessons is an independent publisher. The units are written with Common Core Grade 6 statistics and Grade 8 geometry expectations in mind, and they are not approved, endorsed or certified by any state, district, department, ministry or exam board.

Cover Grades 5 to 8 with one bundle

The Math Bundle holds Decimals and Fractions, Volume and the Coordinate Plane, Statistics and Data and Geometric Transformations for $69.99, compared with $99.96 for the four units bought separately.
